Jiffin gets nursery school![]() Friday, January 12, 2007 The Jiffin Village Development Associationm is benefiting from a nursery school project, funded by Friends of The Gambia, a UK based charitable organisation.
Confirming this to the Daily Observer, Bakary Dembajang, Coordinator and Secretary General of the Village Development Association, said members of the association provided the human resource, while roofing and other small expenditures were done by the UK charitable organisation, headed by Lamin Jammeh, a native of Si-Kunda Village in Jarra West. Mr Dembajang said the school project was near completion, saying “it was left with the furniture and the fence of the school premises. However, he lamented on the association’s inability to provide a clean-drinkable water for the children, as well as learning materials. He then expressed gratitude to the donors for coming to their aid, “saying the school will serve as a stepping-stone for the acquisition of knowledge in the village. This is the first school in the village. All the students had to travel to Kaiaf or Toniataba villages, to be educated. And this has been a burden on the village development efforts, because education is the key to everything”. He then called for support towards the development of the school and scholarship for the students. I just came across this article regarding the building of Jiffen nursery school, which I am very pleased to see. But I would just like to update it a little, as a couple of facts are not correct. The completion of the building and roof was in fact funded by the UK charity "Friends of Si-Kunda", and managed by Sankung Jammeh of Si-Kunda who acts as our project manager in The Gambia. The children have been able to use the school since January 2007, and we provided some learning supplies for them. We hope in the future to be able to do more, I shall be visiting again in November 2007 to discuss how we progress and what the priorities are. For your information our website is www.friendsofsikunda.org Best Regards, Sue Jones, Chairperson.
