Shia Presence in Gambia:

Baba Leigh Replies to Abdoulie Fatty

In our front page story of Wednesday, June 18th  2008, Imam Abdoulie Fatty was quoted to have called on Gambians to be on their guard against possible advances of Shia adherents and apostles to lure them into embracing what he considered the heretic Shia doctrine. The remark has elicited a response from the Kanifing East Imam, Baba Leigh.

Below we reproduce the unedited version of Imam Leigh’s statement:

Islam preaches unity, which is its source of its strength and as far as the average Gambian Muslim is concerned that is their basic understanding regardless of culture and other associated beliefs. It is no exaggeration that there is a deep rooted history spanning close to two centuries binding Gambians and Lebanese regardless of what religious beliefs they follow. Therefore, they have never been seen as ‘threats’ to our peace, stability and unity both as a nation and faith. By extension, the presence of Iraqis or Iranians is very insignificant in terms of numbers. Some of those seen as Lebanese could no longer be regarded thus for the simple fact that some of them have had generations old ties with this country.

As religious leaders, it should be our major preoccupation to bring about strong ties of love and unity among people regardless of so-called religious differences. As an advocate of peace, and also knowing fully well that it is only in peace that we can have our congregation intact, we should not therefore, allow the intolerance besetting Islam in the outside world to creep into our religious tolerant Gambia. It is important for any outspoken religious leader to know his/her limitations and by extension understand the laws and constitution that govern The Gambia. No Imam for that matter is expected to promote discord among members of the ummah. It is important to note and appreciate the volume of contribution that the Lebanese community resident here are making towards the development of this country in the form of investment in business thus creating employment opportunities for our citizens and a lot of cash flow. Lebanese Muslims also contribute in no small measure during the Holy Month of Ramadan in the form of Ramadan gifts and ‘zakatul fitr’ as prescribed in the Holy Book towards the poor and needy. However, there arc those who judge such offers as attempts by the Lebanese in corrupting our people while when other Muslims provide such gifts within the same context they are celebrated, is this not biased and prejudiced judgement’?

I am making a singular appeal to all Gambians particularly the leaders of the Islamic faith to preach the true values of Islam as prescribed in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhamed Sallahu Alahi Wasalam. I wish to make this submission as an honest and peace loving Muslim and of course a true son of the soil for peace, tolerance and unity. Whilst I am not out to hold brief for any interest group, I wish to state clearly that I am advocate of peace and religious tolerance who is not being bank rolled by any sect or group. Herein, I want ourselves to be more concerned with activities taking place right under our noses which are in contravention to basic Islamic teachings that such conferences should aimed to address. The so-called Shia Muslims have been here for a long time now and their presence has yet to be a threat to our peaceful co-existence, so please hands of that subject. If it is true that Saudi Arabia is the home of Islam and the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques of Medina and Mecca and yet they are accommodating all the so-called different sects in their midst, who are we not to attempt to do the same?

To conclude, I wish on my own behalf and on behalf of the rest of the Ummah in The Gambia, to apologise to our Lebanese, Iranian and Iraqi brothers and sisters for whom the

Sunday conference had caused any discomfort. It is good to draw the curtain on this subject reassuring all that they should always continue to see The Gambia as their home which is tolerant, accommodating and peaceful insallah to all Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Spoken like a true leader, unlike the bunch of uneducated idiots like Imam Fatty who spread hatred and claim to be religious leaders. We have more pressing issues in the Gambia such as the high price of food, petrol and etc. Instead of talking about these issues and suggesting ways to improve the lives of Gambians (physical and spiritual), these idiots convene a conference to talk about imaginary enemies. What a shame. Thank you Imam Leigh. I wish we had more leaders like you.

Imam Fatty is a serious "Shit stirer" in the Gambia and the populace should be very careful of the presence of such Fanatics in the country.Their mouths (together with Banding Drammeh) has been taped with politics and money. If he is scared to address the numerous unlawful arrest, killing and disappearance of inocent citizens by the the regime, let him keep quite and stoping creating divisions against the minority communities who are only contributing to national development.Bravo Baba Lee.

I am losing my trust on Imam Baba Leigh, simply because, he quickly responded the warning of Imam Fatty and the other religious leader to the Gambian community about the threat of Shia influences in our country without evaluating what those religious leaders were talking about. We don,t want to become another Iraq or Lebanon, where Shia and the Sunnes are killing each other daily in the name of Islam, as far as I understood the comment of these religious leaders, they did not mean to separate us from our Long time Lebanese friends and families, but it is your misinterpretation , which might brought misunderstanding between the two Muslim community. You shouldn,t do that, any way. We all have friends and families among the Lebanese community in the Gambia, but their mentality of killing other muslems, would not be accepted in the Gambia, therefore, Mr. Imam Fatty and the other religious leaders were right about what they have said.

Thank you my friend.

I do not welcome the feedbacks of Buba and Muhammad(The first two responses) simply because the language used "idiot by buba" and "Shit stirer by Muhammad".I believe regardless of our affiliations,be it political, relgious and others, a maximum respect should be considered when addressing them because they are our spiritual leaders or imam(both imam fatty and Baba Leigh).I'm not endorsing the assertions of neither of them because i'm not a scholar to dilate on it.From layman point of view imam fatty may be right and imam leigh's reply may be right too.If there are certain things that needs to be addressed by an imam which is inconsistent with our religion and code of conduct, and he's not doing it then we can conclude that he betrayed the amanat of duties.I know for sure the interpretations of what we say matters alot. Imam leigh is my imam because i used to live in Kanifing Estate and i speak quite often with him.Imam fatty is very dear to me because i know for sure he's orthodox Islamic teacher.I love both of them for the sake of Allah. By Allah i don't expect any reward from neither but please attach some degree of respect to our imams even if they say things inconsistent with our imaginations and analysis. They are human and bound to make errors and mistake but let not utilize these situatios to discredit them and impersonate them.May Allah guide all of us including our imam

Imam fatty should be cautioned,Wheather SHIA or SUNNI we are all Muslims, thats what is important and these people I believe cannot effect any change in the sunni gambian muslim life. I mean the Ahmadiya were investing in the country`s health and education sector until he remarks against them which made them leave, creating a loophole in the health sector which still can't be fulfiled, even though these people were showing no sign of threat whatsoever.Again he is trying to turn on the bussiness community regardless of the role they are playing in the economic development of the Gambia. If they leave is only a loss to all Gambians including himself and I don't see any threat to their presence in the Gambia.

I am quite with the lively debate going on this topic. I may have been a little harsh with my words on Imam Fatty but sometimes you have to call it like it is. Islam is not about wearing your kaftan and turban around your head and heading to the mosque with your prayer beads. It is a complete way of life. Our religious leaders do not seem to know that. They focus on trivial issues instead of issues that have major impacts on the lives of the people. We have rampant corruption, human right abuses, unlawful arrests, killings and disappearances, poverty and so forth. Instead of these imams dealing with those important issues, they want to worry about some imaginary enemies. Come on; let’s be real with each other. Do you think as an ordinary Gambian, I worry about Shia if I cannot afford the D800 to buy a bag of rice to feed my family; or if my son or daughter is arrested and being tortured or has disappeared and the authorities refuse to tell me where he or she is or let me communicate with him or her. Let’s be real and tell the truth, and not be blinded by money, tribalism, political affiliations and such. The Gambia is for all of us, if it is broken, we all suffer, if it is good, we all enjoy it.
