Ambassador Dutbanjong donates to RVTH

Itti Dutbanjong, the ambassador of Thailand, on Tuesday, donated 5,000 malaria kits to the Royal Victorial Teaching Hospital (RVTH) at a presentation ceremony held at the RVTH conference hall in Banjul.

Receiving the donation, Dr Mariatou Jallow, chief medical director at RVTH, commended Ambassador Dutbanjong for the gesture and also expressed delight as these kits will go a long way towards helping them in their fight against malaria.

Dr Jallow expressed hope that the cooperation between Thailand and The Gambia will continue as well as their support to the RVTH.

For his part, Ambassador Dutbanjong said that Thailand is happy to be a friend of The Gambia and they always think of how to extend the cooperation between the two countries, noting that they will like to share their experiences with the Gambian people.

He added that they will join hands with the government of The Gambia to eradicate malaria.

Ambassador Dutbanjong assured the staff and the government of The Gambia of their fullest support.

Mrs Awa Kah John, principal accountant, RVTH, delivered the vote of thanks.

Mam Marie Jagne, chief matron, RVTH and other staff of the hospital attended the ceremony.

Illiassa donates to DOSH

Lamin Kebba Jammeh, National Assembly Member for Illiassa, on behalf of his constituency, on Wednesday, donated hospital equipments to the Department of State for Health and social welfare.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Central Medical stores in Banjul, Lamin Kebba Jammeh said the donation was as a result of a gesture from a British couple Ann and Steve Gotting.

According to honourable Jammeh, the Samaritans, Ann and Steve Gotting, have been visiting The Gambia for nearly twenty years. “They are delighted to have donated the items to the people of my constituency . We also wish to donate the items to the Department of State for Health and social welfare to complement government’s efforts to boost the health care system in the country”.

The donated items included X-ray viewers, hospital beds, and uniforms for doctors and nurses, among others.

Mr and Mrs Gothing, according to Honourable Jammeh, recognised the efforts of the Gambian leader, President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh’s strive to providing better medcal services for the Gambian people.

He thanked Bakary Jammeh, a represetnative of Ann and Steve Gotting, Saint Georgest Hospital Trust - UK, Calhunn SES Ltd - UK, SES Ltd- UK, Helxm International - UK, Dogmersfiedld Infant School, and Richard Cloudsley School of the United Kingdom.

He also thanked Mr Musa Saine for all the support he rendered provided them in clearing the items from the Gambia Ports Authority.

MSSS holds graduation ceremony

Muslim Senior Secondary School (MSSS),  held, last Friday, its 28th graduation ceremony, at the school ground in Banjul. After 3 years of intensive academic studies, 679 graduated, among them 8 are  from the Arabic section.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Mr Lamin K. Marong, principal, Muslim Senior Secondary School expressed  delight for having succeeded in training these students in both morals and learning attitude. He also manifested great hopes about the graduands’ capability to live up with expectations.  

Mr Marong seized the opportunity to commend Momodou Lamin Kujabi a graduand, who he said, is one of the best athlete in the country as he has already represented the country in Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Algeria and most recently in Senega. According to him, Momodou Lamin Kujabi will be travelling to Togo this week for another moment of defending the Gambian flag.  

He further indicate that the graduands have gone through a long period of life, but he noted that it is just the beginning of another longer journey where they will be exposed to so many obstacles. “it is certainly not an easy encounter. To succeed in life, you must be able to rock through all odds”, he said.Mr Marong finally concluded by extoling the parents to whom he said, their efforts were instrumental inproviding the necessary support to their children.

For his part, Dr Ebrima Malick Samba,  chairman of the board of governors, MSSS, urged parents to create a conducive environment for their children to perform successfully in schools. Considering that girls constitute the most vulnerable, he outlined the necessity to put new synergy in helping them to succeed.

Dr Omar Jah Jnr, Guest speaker of the occasion and a Senior Lecturer at the University of The Gambia(UTG) and an ex-student of MSSS, advised graduand to make good use of the knowledge and expressed hope that they should open their mind to the sense of duty and responsibility. As a university lecturer, he finally advised the graduands to explore new avenues by enrolling to the University of The Gambia. According to him, the entry requirements are based on 5 credits including English and Mathematics.

A piece of advice and the vote of thanks were respectively delivered by the out-going headboy Alieu Jallow and Musukebba Jammeh, the out-going headgirl.The graduation ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Alhagie Modou Joof, assistant director general GRTS who is an ex-student of MSSS and a big crowd comprisng parents, teachers and students.Certificates were awarded to graduands and prizes were issued to deserving students.

VP returns from Taiwan

The vice-president and secretary of state for Women’s Affairs touched the runway of the Banjul International Airport yesterday, after attending the inauguration of the new Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou.

Dr Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy was accompanied to the Asian-Pacific island state by Dr Omar Touray, the secretary of state for Foreign Affairs, Abdou Colley, the secretary of state for Trade, Industry and Employment, amongst other senior government officials.

During the course of her week-long stay in Taiwan, the vice-president was hosted to a string of meetings, including a courtesy call on former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian. She also visited important institutions and companies, whose operation could be of value to The Gambia’s socio-economic development.

The vice-president and her delegation were also hosted to a reception by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan, before attending the grand inauguration of President Ma in Taipei, where more than 530 foreign dignitaries graced the ceremony.

UNIGAMSA gets new executive

The University of The Gambia Medical Students Association (UNIGAMSA) on Saturday sworn in during a colourful ceremony held at the School of Medicine in Banjul. The new executive council, which is tasked with the responsibility of presiding over the destiny of the association, is the fourth of its kind.

In his remarks, Mr Gibril Ndow, the outgoing Secretary General, said that their tenure was a moment of great challenges. They were fortunate to live up with expectations, as UNIGAMSA continues to always stand up in order to fulfill its responsibility.

According to him, their first task was to identify the needs of students and put up strategies capable of helping to remedy to these problems. Mr Ndow further outlined some of the achievements which included two trophies won by the UNIGAMSA  football team.

Acknowledging the large support demonstrated by various institutions, he called on them keep on providing such an assistance. In fact, he noted, Paradise Suite Hotel has recntly provided a grant of 8,000 dalasis to the association so as to enable the publication of UNIGAMSA newsletter.

In a similar vein, the outgoing president Bully Camara recognised and expressed his appreciation of the great support they have been getting especially from the President of the Republic, Dr Yahya Jammeh. He therefore advised the new executive to deploy the necessary efforts in order to maintain the association on the right track.

Mr Ousman Nyan, the provest and deputy vice chancellor thanked all those who have been supporting the students in their activities either morally or financially. He also advised to always open their mind to the sense of duty and responsibility.  Other speackers incliuded Dr Mariatou Jallow, Chief Medical Director ; Carlos Salsamendes, the Cuban plenipotentiary in The Gambia.

In the new executive, Mr Peter Mendy steps in as the new president, flanked by Mr Momodou Tekanyi, as vice president. While Abdul Hamid Kanteh took over the post of Secretary General from Gibril Ndow.

14 police officers leave for Darfur

A contingent of fourteen police officers of The Gambia Police Force will leave Banjul today, Friday, April 18 to the Sudanese trouble region of Darfur under the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

The fourteen will join one hundred Gambian police peace keepers who are currently in Darfur.

In his words of wisdom during a farewell ceremony yeaserday at the police headquarters in Banjul, police Commissione Jatta Baldeh,who deputised for the Deputy Inspector General of police, said the deployment of the contingent is a manifestation of The Gambia’s readiness to maintain peace in Sudan.

He told the contingent to always obey command and be more vigilant to deal with situations with consciousness and maturity.

“We have to organised pre-deployment training sessions for the stand by forces in a bid to keep them abreast with the challenges they are expected to encounter”, he said.

While commending all stakeholders who have contributed to the success of the deployment, commissioner Baldeh, urged them to continue to keep the flag of The Gambia flying high on peacekeeping missions.

For his part, FRI Jammeh, police advicer implored the officers to very be careful while in Sudan.“Keep high standard of discipline and professionalism. Execute your duties without fear or favour in the advantage of the majority. Respect the human rights values and don’t take revenge,” he adviced, noting tthat the continent should acquaint themselves with the tradition, cultural and social norms of Sudan.

Edward Sambou, Commissioner of police, urged the contingent to leave up to the UN peacekeeping standards.

Ebrima Bah, Chief Supretendent of The Gambia police force who doubles as the personal assistant to the Inspector General of the police chaired the farewell ceremony.

New Apostolic Church donates to RVTH

The new Apostolic Church in The Gambia, through the Apostolic Church in Germany, yesterday donated two respiratory machines to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, at a ceremony held at the RVTH conference hall in Banjul.

The church which has it’s branch in Bundung, has over 2400 followers in the country. The donation is part of the church’s humanitarian mission towards saving lifes.

Presenting the machines on behalf of the church, Jens Lindemann, Vice President of the church said, the donation is meant to improve the standard of the hospital in other to save lives. According to him, the gesture is part of their humanitarian mission to save the soul of mankind. He then called on the hospital management to partner with them to continue to work towards the well-being of mankind.

Momodou Jallow, senior nursing officer, RVTH, who spoke on the significance of the machine said, the importance of the machines which cost several thousand Euros cannot be over emphasized. He explained that the life saving machine is capable of keeping somebody in a coma and breathing difficultly alive, adding that, its component can even be useful without electricity.

Receiving the machines, Baboucarr Ngum, public relation officer at the RVTH, thanked the New Apostolic Church for providing the hospital with such high standard life saving machines, adding that it will go a long in raising the standards of the hospital.

According to him, this is not the first time that the New Apostolic Church is donating to the RVTH and assured them that the machines will be put into good use.

Gabou Sylva, administrative supervisor of RVTH, Abdoulie Danso, chief security RVTH, Josephine Correa, hospital administration, Huja Jah, development officer, Amadou Jallow, senior nursery officer attended the ceremony.

Henrieg Mbayo, the secretary general of The Gambia branch Tony Ennin, first secretary to the new church in The Gambia and Apostre Gomis, from Ziguinchor in the Senegalese southern region, led the Apostolic Church German delegation to the RVTH.

Jammeh supports Independence Drive Gamo

President Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh last Saturday donated three bulls to the Independence Drive Mosque Committee, through the committee of Banjul Muslim Elders, as his contribution in observance of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), commonly known as Gamo, at a ceremony in Independence Drive Mosque, Banjul.

The Messenger of Allah, Peace be Upon Him, was born on Monday 12 Rabi Al Awwal, in the year of Elephant (570 CE). His ancestry can be traced back to Prophet Ibrahim. The lineage of ‘ADNAN’ ascribed to him goes back to the prophet Ismail, the son of the Prophet Ibrahim(Peace be upon on both of them).

Speaking in an interview with Daily Observer at the Independence Drive Mosque in Banjul, Alhagie AA Faal, chairman of the Committee of Banjul Muslim Elders on behalf of the committee, thanked President Jammeh for the gesture. Chairman Faal also acknowledged the contributions of Institutions and individuals such as Gamcel, Gamtel, Taf Construction, OB Conateh, among others, for making the event a successful one. He also stressed the significance of observing the day, noting that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) really deserves to be remembered in such an organised gand Islamic manner.

According to him, the annual event (Gamo) is observed in Banjul for almost a century now. He noted that the committee is responsible for the affairs of muslims in Banjul as well as the Independence Drive mosque, Half-die Mosque and the King Fahad Mosque.

Banjul muslim elders also appointed their own Imams and deputies and delegate responsibilties to the committee who are answerable to the Banjul Muslim elders.

The event was characterised by recitation of Holy Qura’n, sermon, praises to Allah (SWT) and his Messenger Prophet Muhammed (SAW) by Dairatul Ahl. Badr Hashiheen, among others.

Macky Sall meets Jammeh, VP

Macky Sall, the Speaker of the Senegalese National Assembly on Friday met President Yahya Jammeh and Vice President Dr Aja Isatou Njie Saidy at their various offices at the State House, Banjul.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Njie Saidy welcomed the Senegalese delegation noting that The Gambia is a home for them. She called for more collaboration between the two nations noting that we are brothers.”The cooperation between the two nations are critical” she urged.

Ismalia Sambou, secretary of state for Local Government, Lands and Religious Affairs echoed similar sentiments and briefed Speaker Sall on the various structures of the Local Government of The Gambia.

Fatou Lamin Faye, secretary of state for Basic and secondary Education commended Senegal for playing a key role in the education sector of the Gambia. She equally recognised the efforts of Speaker Sall during the Joint Gambia-Senegal Ministerial commission and also saluted the government of Senegal for also empowering women.

Other Speakers included Abdou Colley, Secretary of state for Trade and Employment, Crispin Grey-Johnson, Secretary of state for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, and Momdou Kotu Cham, Secretary of state for Forestry and the Environment.

Speaking to journalists shortly after meeting Vice President Njie-Saidy, Speaker Sall noted that he is in The Gambia to honor the special invitation of his colleague, Honorable Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, to grace the 2008 state opening of the National Assembly to be conducted by President Yahya Jammeh. He expressed delight at been accorded the opportunity to meet Vice President Njie-Saidy noting that they have discuss in wider range, the bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

“So I came to salute her and recognise her leadership role more especially during the joint Gambia-Senegal commission” he concluded.

At the end of the ceremony, Speaker Sall presented a gift to Vice President Njie-Saidy.
