Current Feed Content‘Spy’ NABBED IN Kanilai![]() Friday, August 29, 2008 Inacoio Catanosa, a Guinean, was paraded at the Brikama Magistrates Court, charged with spying, which violates Section 37 of the criminal laws of The Gambia. The prosecution stated that the accused allegedly committed the offence between June and July this year at Kanilai village, Foni Kansala District, where he was nabbed in the act of spying. But the accused has pleaded not guilty to the charge. At that juncture, Police Prosecutor ASP Touray applied for an adjournment of the case, saying that the charge sheet would be sent to the AG’s Chambers for legal advice. The magistrate also denied the accused person court bail and ordered for his remand at the State Central Prison, at Mile II until September 11, when the case will resume. Author: by Amadou Jallow ‘Paedophile’ pleads not guiltyFriday, August 29, 2008 Anthony Michael Dobson, a Norwegian tourist who is standing trial on charges of defiling a minor and child pornography, which contravene Section 127(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap 10 Volume III of the amended Children Act 2005 and Section 8 (1)(a) of the Tourism Act 2003, has pleaded not guilty. The embattled Norwegian appeared before Magistrate Ayoub John Njie of the Brikama Magistrates Court. According to the prosecution, Anthony Michael Dobson unlawfully and carnally defiled a young girl (name withheld) who was less than 18 years at Yarambamaba Estate, along Coastal Road, Old Yundum. Mr Dobson was also charged for taking indecent photographs of a child (name withheld) between the months of July and August, this year, at the same place. His Gambian accomplice, Mustapha Drammeh, is also facing trial for procuring a child (name withheld) for Mr Anthony, which is contrary to Section 30(1)(a) of the Children’s Act. Mr Drammeh has also pleaded not guilty. When the case was mentioned, the presiding magistrate informed the court about the request of the defence counsel, Borry Touray, for an adjournment of the trial, which he later granted. However, the police prosecutor, ASP Touray made an application for the court to refuse the two accused persons bail, saying that the case is still under investigation. His application was granted by the presiding magistrate, who subsequently adjourned the matter to September 11. Author: by Amadou Jallow Father charged for defiling step-daughterWednesday, August 27, 2008 One Lamin Bora Bajinka has been charged for defiling his step-daughter at Busumbala Village, Kombo North, Western Region. Mr Bajinka, a taxi driver, was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Brikama Magistrates Court, who warned the accused of the severe consequences should he continue to deny the charge. The magistrate observed that he suspected that there was some element of truth in the charge against the accused, as his own witnesses have been reluctant to come to the court to give testimony. Mr Bajinka, said to be in his 40s, was accused of defiling Ramatoulie Jammeh, who is the daughter of his wife. But Mr Bajinka has continued to refute the charge levelled against him. When the case resumed on Monday, Mr Bajinka told the court that the allegation levelled against him was baseless, saying that since he married "no one had known me for such acts." The police prosecutor, Cpl 1260 Colley, then applied for the accused to be granted a court bail, but this was revoked by the presiding magistrate, who subsequently ordered for Mr Bajinka to be remanded until September 15, when the case will resume. Author: by Amadou Jallow Man faces D107,000 cattle theft chargeWednesday, August 27, 2008 Bamba Bah, a native of Brikama, Western Region, was on Monday arraigned before Magistrate Ayoub John Njie of the Brikama Magistrates Court on six charges of cattle theft, worth D107,000. According to the prosecution, Mr Bah had stolen seven heads of cattle valued at D37,000, belonging to one Aja Nyima Tunkara. The accused was also charged with stealing another three heads of cattle worth D13,000; and an additional two heads of cattle valued at D14,000. Meanwhile, Mr Bah was also accused of stealing five heads of cattle, one bull and an additional two heads of cattle valued at D25,000, D6,000 and D12,000, respectively. However, Bah has pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him, incriminating some groups of people in Brikama as being responsible for the theft but wanting to see him down. But Presiding Magistrate Njie reminded him that he should be ready to defend himself with the truth if he wants to be a free man. Police Prosecutor ASP Joof submitted an application for the accused not to be granted granted a court bail, but the magistrate turned down the application, saying that every accused person has a constitutional right to a bail. He then granted the accused person a court bail to the sum of D100,000 to be signed by a Gambian surety, plus a valid ID card and an affidavit. Author: by Amadou Jallow Paedophile remanded at Mile II![]() Wednesday, August 27, 2008 A Norwegian tourist who was charged with paedophilia, alongside his Gambian accomplice, have been remanded at the State Central Prison at Mile II, after being paraded at the Brikama Magistrates Court. The trial of Anthony Michael Dobson, 61, and 29-year old Mustapha Drammeh could not proceed as the presiding principal magistrate, Pa Harry Jammeh was reportedly indisposed. Anthony Michael Dobson is facing criminal charges of defilement of a girl under 16 years, contrary to Section 127 of the Criminal Code and child pornography which contravenes Section 8(1)(a) of the Tourism Offenses Act 2003. Mustapha Drammeh was charged for procuring a girl for sex, contrary to Section 7(a) of the same Act. Since the case could not proceed, the two men were later whisked away to the State Central Prison. Both men are expected back in court today to enter their plea. Author: by Sanna Jawara Babylon attack case adjourned again![]() Thursday, August 14, 2008 The April 11th 2008 Babylon attack by angry natives of Makumbaya Village, Kombo North, could not proceed before Magistrate EF M’Bai of the Brikama Magistrates court, last Tuesday, because of new developments. When the case was called last Tuesday, Buba Bojang and NB Jones Nebo, who represent the state in the trial, informed the court that the prosecution had decided to revisit the charges, which they said would enable them to free some of the accused and continue the trials with new charges. The prosecution told the court that this was still not possible due to some reasons. They therefore submitted an application for the court to give them more time for them to get adequately prepared for the trial. Senior Magistrate M’Bai then granted the application and adjourned the case to Tuesday 19 August, for the continuation of the proceedings. The defence counsel for the accused persons, Lawyer Antouman Gaye, was absent. Ninety-four accused persons are currently under trial for their involvement in the incident, with five multiple charges; including wilful damage to properties during their protest in the process of reclaiming what they said was their land from Lamin Jarju of Babylon. Author: by Amadou Jallow 20 broadcasters capacitatedTuesday, August 12, 2008 The Network of Community Radios in West Africa, in collaboration with Diapol and Procas, an NGO based in Casamance, Senegal, recently concluded a four-day capacity training for 20 community radio broadcasters in Brikama, Western Region. The training, which brought together participants from Guinea Bissau, Senegal and The Gambia, was geared towards enhancing the capacity of radio broadcasters and also fostering the relationship between the three countries. During the training, the participants were introduced to broadcast media ethics, production techniques, trans-national communication and cross border programming amongst others. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Abdou Jawo, network coordinator, the training offered participants the opportunity to acquire new skills in production and co-production. He added that the roles of community radios in the consolidation of peace, solidarity and integration along the borders of the three countries are infinitive. He then urged the participants to take the training seriously. For his part, Ardy Fatty, media trainer and consultant, who is also the managing editor and head of news at GRTS TV, urged participants to make good use of the knowledge gained during the training to foster integration and promote unity within the three neighboring states. The Brikama final will pit last year’s league champions, Berewuleng, against the knock-out winners, Daru Gifts, at the Brikama Mini-stadium. Bakau football will return to normalcy when Jazz FC take on Banda FC. And for the first time in many years, Bakau will be playing their nawettan games at the Independence Stadium as their mini-stadium which is situated at the heart of the town is reported to be unfit to host games. Author: by Nanama Keita Teacher admits impregnating student![]() Thursday, August 07, 2008 Muhammad Bah, a teacher at Kerewan Upper Basic School, who was charged for impregnating his 16-year old student, has admitted the charge preferred against him. Mr Bah, who appeared before Magistrate EF M’Bai of the Brikama Magistrates Court yesterday, confessed that he detected the young girls pregnancy, which prompted him to take her to a hospital. In his testimony before Magistrate EF M’Bai, Mr Bah said the first day he had carnal knowledge of the young girl she had been coming from the Banjulinding Health Centre. He confessed that when the young girl was coming from the hospital, he (the teacher) called her and took her to one of his friend’s computer training centre. According to him, while inside one of the computer rooms with the girl, he told the young girl to go and relax on the bed. According to the teacher, some minutes later, he joined the young girl inside and sat beside her. “As we were so close to each other, we could not control our emotions and I had carnal knowledge of the young girl for the first time,” he said. Mr Bah added that the second day he had sex with his student was during a sports day at their school. Mr Bah asserted that by the end of February, he noticed some changes in the young girl and when he asked her what the matter was, the young girl replied that “nothing was wrong.” Mr Bah said some weeks later, the young girl started vomiting and feeling dizzy. “From there, it become apparent to me that she was pregnant,” Bah said. He concluded that when he took the young girl to the hospital, the results revealed that she was two-month pregnant. Brikama United’s Alagie Bah headed in an opener in the first fifteen minutes of the game through Modou Susso's pass. Nema United almost dashed Brikama's hopes of qualifying when Abdoulie Bah capitalised on the opponents’ defensive blunder with a ballistic shot for an equaliser in the 53rd minute. Brikama's new entrants Modou Sowe and Ebou Cole brought tears of joy and sorrow on the faces of Brikama and Nema fans respectively when the former fired in a rebound from the latter's shot saved by Nema's goalie Saikou Sonko in the dying minutes of the game. With 32 points and one more match remaining against another fellow Western Region side Jambanjelly, who are relegation threatened, Brikama are looking forward to the First Division with hope of staying in the league and clinching trophies after their first season. The day would ever remain in the heart and mind of sports enthusiasts in Brikama and Western Region in particular, as it marks the first qualification of a team from Western Region, to the GFA Division One League since the establishment of The Gambia Football Association in 1952.
