Niamina West chief fired in six days![]() Tuesday, May 13, 2008 The newly appointed chief of Niamina West has had his services terminated yesterday, barely six days after his appointment, unimpeachable sources told the Daily Observer. Ngai Sama Dampha was officially removed on May 12. A native of Pinyai Village in Central River Region, Dampha had replaced Alhaji Kekuta Jawo, who was also fired a about a week ago. Our sources revealed that Mr Dampha has been replaced by Yorro Gidda Bah, a native of Maali Kunda Village. Ganyie Touray, the governor of CRR, confirmed the story, but declined to comment on the reason for the short-lived appointment of Mr Dampha. This latest development follows the sacking of a number of chiefs, including Haruna Sabally of Jarra Central, Moro Jawla of Sami, Sambujang Jagne of Farafenni and Kabiro Kanteh of Central Baddibu. Author: by Assan Sallah & Lamin SM Jawo Commentsbubacarr - Louisville, Kentucky Tuesday, May 13, 2008 6:30 PM Lack of democracy is one factor that is holding The Gambia behind. Dictatorship is not a good way of developing a country. Constitutionally, chiefs should be elected and not appointed. If Yaya Jammeh feels that the people of the Gambia approve his way running the country, then he shouldn't worry about the political affiliations of the chiefs. Every Gambian has the right to be a leader as he (Yaya) is. The Gambia is the only country we Gambian have a right to express our civic right (to vote and to be voted). Therefore, it is absolutely ridiclous for Yaya to ignor the constitution that the entire nation voted for massively on a referandum, and continue to appoint and fire chiefs based on political motivation.
Whether Yaya knows it or not the world is watching the Gambia in the way we conduct ourselves when it come our democratic values. No man is an island much more a nation. We need a leader who can re-intergrate the Gambia back into the international community. We are losing a lot by being isolated by so many coutries and organitions around the world whoes help could have a significant positive impact on our development process. We cannot afford to continue to lose their support because of a radical leader. The rule of law, independent judiciary, free of expression, the right to belong to any political affiliation, respect for human right are the pillars of any effective democracy. This is essential for meaning development in our country. These pillars of democracy I enumerate above are not implemented by the Jammeh administration as they should, which is unfortunate for our democracy. This why I urged, I'm urging and I will continue to urge the entire Gambian people most especially the young people to understand that we deserve better than the way we are being treated by this authoritive Jammeh re-gime. So, we need change desperately and when we come together as one people we will rescue our future and that of the next generation from such a despotic leader like Yaya Jammeh.
