Hamat Bah HAMMERED! As President warns potential destabilizers![]() Wednesday, May 14, 2008 President Jammeh has warned Hamat Bah, the leader of the opposition National Reconciliation Party (NRP), that he (Jammeh) would never again allow politics of sectionalism which was peddled by the former Upper Saloum parliamentarian in the country’s political arena. Jammeh warned that such politics of divide and rule instigates conflict in the country. The Gambian leader gave this warning on Sunday during a visit at the D7.4 million Katamina water tank project in Niamina West, Central River Region (CRR). The president clarified that he did hold no hatred for any opposition, but contended that he would only accept an opposition that was ready to work for national interest. “I will not allow any opposition that agitates political conflict or tribalism in this country. Any opposition party that is found meddling in such forms of politics would live to regret it. I don’t give a damn about what the international world say. The UDP or any other political party cannot use politics only to destroy the country. So if this is what they mean as democracy, I will not and will never allow this type of democracy in this country,” he emphasised. President Jammeh then exposed the activities of Hamat Bah in Nigeria, when he (Hanmat Bah) had told the people there that “Fulas voted for him and that himself (Hamat) and Jammeh had agreed that Jammeh should rule the country for two years during the transition and five years in the civilian administration, after which he (Hamat) would take over to ensure that each tribe rules. He said the Mandinkas were the first to lead, now the Jolas and next the Fulas.” Jammeh described this as untrue. In another engagement, President Jammeh also presided over a meeting in Jarra Soma, Lower River Region (LRR), where he reiterated his back to the land call and clearly noted that the government could not employ everybody. Yankuba Touray, the secretary of state for Fisheries and Water Resources, praised the people of the region for voting for the APRC in the last elections. Momodou Soma Jobe, the governor LRR, assured the president of his region’s support. Other speakers included Alhaji Yahya Jarjusey, the chief of Jarra West, Aji Fatou Njie, a women mobiliser and Seedy Cham, the divisional chairman of APRC. by Alhagie Jobe on tour CommentsThere are 7 comments - add your comment bubacarr - Louisville, Kentucky Wednesday, May 14, 2008 6:59 AM If Hamat said in Nigeria that Fulas voted for him, then Hamat Bah must been very stupid to say that. When it comes to politics, no one should make mention of allegiance to a particular tribe. Hamat Bah has support from all tribes and he should appriciate them all, and not only supporters of one tribe. If the allegation is true, then Hamat Bah should apologize publicly for words. Tribal politics is dangerous and it should not tolerated. We have seen what happened in Kenya recently. We don't want that kind of politics in the Gambia. Gambians are peaceful and we want to keep it like that.
However, Yaya Jammeh should also understand that cracking down on opposition leaders is not the solution to bring peace to The Gambia. Gambians are sensible and we listen carefully. Condemning Hamat Bah's words in the strongest possible term is enough. But Yaya should not arrest and jail Hamat only for his(Hamat's) stupid opinion that he said in Nigeria. ALA - Brusibi, Gambia Wednesday, May 14, 2008 8:06 PM Hamat should not be crazy enough to say that.He once won in upperSaloum which Fulas r not much.May God save us irresponsible politicians.U know Hamat is a panhandler n is capable of doing anything just to fill his pockets.Hamat 'WAD SE SE.' Anonymous Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:15 PM Please guys do not worry yourselves about tribal politic in that counrty. Every tribe in the country has number of other tribes marrying its members. I think Jajah is just playing his distroctive cards to Hamat Bah. Ben Batika - England, United Kingdom Thursday, May 15, 2008 3:46 AM What any independent minded person must realise and cherish is that, H.E. Yaya Jammeh has within a short period developed The GAMBIA beyound recognition. This is the hardcore truth.
Waa Juwara has every right to join any party. Thats the beauty of democracy. Informed choices to join any party; informed choices to vote. Hamat Bah's comments that fulas voted for him are insensitive and selfdamaging. He should quickly acknowledge making a mistake and forge ahead. Bory Jatta, Somita. - Africa, World Friday, May 16, 2008 6:44 AM HamatBah is not that type of Politician. Those remarks attributed to him were malicious calculated to tarnish his good image. During his tenure a member of the National Assembly, he revealed several bad deeds of the current Government. This is why they fabricated this allegations against. Who is more tribalist than Yahya? He has institutionalize tribalism in our security services and no one dares say a word.Who will say Yahya respects ethnic diversity in the Gambia? Sunkary Jarjue, Batabutu - Africa, World Friday, May 16, 2008 6:59 AM Hamat Bah cannot say those that Yaya alledged him to have said.Yaya is just intimidating Hamat Bah and want to distract his supporters. Let Yaya tell if his appointments of his jola group is justified. Any Government office in the Gambia has either a jola boss or a jola deputy. If the boss is an other tribe and the deputy a jola, within a short time, the boss is fired and the Jola deputy will take over! I am a jola, but when the days of reckoning arrives, some people will have sympathy on some of us who distanced ourselves from Yaya. I knew quite a few who do not want his appointments. Gambia Gambian - Gambia, Africa Saturday, May 17, 2008 4:32 AM Hamat is irrelevant in the Gambian opposition now. He is no treath to Yaya, so Yaya has no reason to falsely accuse Hamat of such words. Sunkary, your type, on the other hand, are the dangerous cancer in our midst. Hear yourself how obcessed you are with this "jola" thing. You even choose a "jola" name to disguise yourself. Your type are the green snakes in our society. Yaya is so a responsible leader that you all will be rooted out together with your Hamat. Gambia is ONE large GAMBIAN family not that of TRIBES.
