I am not sure why the launching of such would warrant news. Everyone knows the unemployment ratio in the Gambia and Africa are in the high eighty percentile if not greater.
The real problem to focus on is the under employed and unemployable. The latter is the choke hold that will keep us dependant on the west forever. We must address thes problems from the root by ensuring that our future gets the necessary education and technical skills necessary to be able to work.
For the immediate, we must aggressively start training the youth on skills that they will be able to use to support their living. The building industry is booming, but over ninety percent of the workers in this industry are foreigners. Why not Gambians?
Please stop! Don’t tell me they don’t want to do it or they are lazy. We know it is a worthy job that can provide a quality lifestyle, we now need to sell it to the youth and that is where the government comes in.
The government needs to put value to these jobs, lift morale, make it acceptable, cool and share success stories on national TV.
We all know of a young uneducated kid that stayed home to learn his father's trade while we went to school. After graduating, we become unemployed, frustrated while the now skilled uneducated person is not only earning a living but he ends up supporting our bad “attaya” habits at his shop while he continues to earn a living and building a family with the beautiful girl we went to school with.
