Amie Jah, alias ‘Jah bless’, is a musical genius who is very near and dear to the hearts of music lovers in The Gambia. Speaking to Entertainment recently, the Banjul-born musician said she is currently working round the clock to produce an album when she gets the sponsor.

Amie, who started music at a tender age, was able to release singles entitled Yaya Jammeh and Amie Yaffa respectively. However, she said a lack of support is greatly pinning her down in her drive to reach stardom. Amie went further to explain that her aim and objective is to raise the flag of The Gambia’s music. She was part of various dance groups in various hotels in the country.

Abdallah Secka better known as Seckalai is a young upcoming solo R&B star currently working underground on his music. He is working very hard to reach international stardom.

He is a promising young talent who used to record jingles for some companies. He is currently working with the House of Productions in collaboration with the Yagana World Studio, both an institutions that help young artists to realise their potential.
In an interview with What’s On,  the young star said his musical career started when he used to perform at Hotels.

According to him, he used to perform at renowned entertainment spots in the country.
With his versatile skills and hardcore voice, the young R&B singer has developed himself to a much formidable solo singer ready to break silence in the country music industry. 

"Music is something I love very much. In other words it is in my blood," he said.

"I am currently working on my debut album which will be out very soon. Though the music industry in the country is not easy, we will continues to push it to higher heights,” he said.

The R&B rap star maintained that in The Gambia many people view the industry differently adding that what the industry needs is support from all stakeholders to expose the country’s young talents internationally.

" Artists play a crucial role in national development. They can influence a good number of people. However, we (artists) should also bear in mind that we should be role models and be positive in whatever we do as some of our fans copy our life styles," he added.

Kress Moley, An Emerging Superstar

One of The Gambia’s leading superstar male vocalists and top flight reggae artiste, Kress Moley is poised to take the music buying public by storm by releasing six singles entitled ‘I am Black’ and ‘Love One Heart’ among others. The Brikama—born music superstar in the making is currently busy in the studio putting the finishing touches to the said six singles which will comprise twelve tracks in one album in CD format. He noted that the album will hit the market very soon.

Kress Moley, who started in the music since at a tender age, is an emerging star endowed with a fluid voice. His music is exceptionally danceable and always contains meaningful and factual messages. Kress’ songs tackle themes such as social vices, youth matters, Love and empowerment respectively. Some of the songs he has produced are presently enjoying prime airplay on local radio stations; prominent among them is Timpullo Redeem, released in 2007. Showing no sign of slowing down, Kress Moley is striving relentlessly to put the finishing touches to his twelve-track debut album. His tracks are expected to be a hot and tasty musical meal where it hit the music market.

In a chat with Entertainment, Kress Moley said that he has already completed recording all that songs in the album but he was quick to lament that due to inadequacy of funds, he could not release the album. “I need support financially in order to release the album that is still yet to hit the market. I am desperately soliciting help from public spirited individuals and music buffs to enable me to release the album,” he said. According to him, if supported, he is ready to do his best for the country, adding that what he needs now is just financial support noting that it is his main constraint. In conclusion, he revealed that he is very grateful to Alfusainey Kanteh, a brother of his who plays Guitar for Yousou Ndour, for inspiring him to get into the music scene. He finally thanked his managers and promoters, especially Pa Jarju and Alex all at Lion Heart sound system for supporting him at all times.

The word ‘music’ means a series of sounds made from various instruments or voices in a way that sounds pleasant and exciting. Undisputablly the world’s most top flight source of entertainment, music is played in different formats.

A musical lyric is akin to a medical doze for a patience who is receiving treatment. Music had played and continues to play an important role in our daily lives. It is used for different purposes such as spreading messages of peace, unity and the need for love of humanity, among others. People of different times and cultures have contributed significantly towards the development, promotion and preservation of the spirit of music throughout the world.

People like Bob Marley and others are known for their spirited preachings and spread of prophetic messages through the use of musical lyrics. Bob Marley, the renowned legend of reggae music, was quoted in one of his musical lyrics as saying: "music, when it hits you, you feel no pain’’.

June 21st is set aside as the World Music day, celebrated annually by artists and musicians of all categories. As part of a series of activities marking the day, Alliance Franco Gambienne (AFG), in collaboration with Comium Company Ltd, a private GSM service provider and the Gambia Musicians’ Association, last Saturday, held a massive music jamboree at the Alliance Franco-Gambienne Garden on Kairaba Avenue.

This somewhat rare musical Jamboree,which started from June 21st, ran into the wee hours of June 22nd, and it brought together artists and musicians from both within and outside the Gambia, the likes of the famours Armaquedon Band from Guinea Bissau, Jaliba Kuyateh, the Gambia’s king of kora, cultural ambassador, UNICEF’s Goodwill ambassador, among various other heavyweights in the industry.

Mr Pascal Rezzock, director general (DG) of Alliance Franco Gambienne, speaking during an exclusive chat with Arts and Culture at the site of the occasion, gave a brief historical background of the World Music Day. According to the AFG boss, one man called Mr Jacklang, founder of the Alliance Franco (AF) in Paris, France, had intiated the celebration about 20 years ago. He added that AF is an institution established for the promotion,development and preservation of the French and other cultures throughout the world.

Ebrima Jorbateh, 7-year old son of Fili Jorbateh,founder and coordinator of the Kanbeng Band in Brikama, Western Region, officially opened the show. His thanked the organisers of the event for what he called a positive step geared towards the development of arts and culture in the Gambia. The Brikama based cultural musician further expressed optimism and confidence in the future of the Gambian music industry.

Masané, others on stage tonight

Report reaching What’s On, has indicated that The Senegalese international female star of recent times, Masané  and the  "Waflash" band are expected to thrill mbalax  fans tonight  in an extra-ordinary style at Brikama Jokor, Western Region.

The Senegalese international mbalax star will appear on stage alongside few other Gambians sprountig stars namely Nancz Nancz aka  Gambian Beyoncy, Ndey Cham, Jaye Mbaye, and Deeha among others.

The show will move to Dream Park, the newest entertainment spot near Senegambia on Saturday while Jokor Garden aka the university of Mumbai will be on fire on Sunday June 15 2008.

According to Lamin Cham of Champion Sound Promotions, the organisers of the show described it as another  timely one when mbalax have long being waiting for.

Cham noted that  Masané  is really a big star of the moment adding that  this week mbalax fans in the country will have a weekend full of enjoyment.

According to him, the Senegalese female mbalax star  hot stage appearance couple with her melodious voice is just great.

It could be recalled that, this will be Masané’s second public appearance after staging a cloudburst show at the Dream Park near Senegambia some weeks ago. Meanwhile, this show will give the Senegalese star opportunity to entertained her fans with hit tunes in her latest album. So don’t wait to be told as all roads lead to Jokor Brikama tonight.

Introducing Da Poetic X

Da Poetic X is yet another young Gambian star making headways in The country’s entertainment industry. The groups comprises three young singers namely, Ayo, Bilal and PMS. Following the released of three singles, Jambarr, Radio Mbeda and Wulajanjara, Da Poetic X stood tall for years as one of The Gambia’s leading rap in recent times expressing words of righteous in the new hip-hop  arena.

The Da Poetic X known for their hot stage appearance  are still remain at the  epicentre of The Gambian rap scene.

Such head line-worthy drama informed Da Poetic X which they delivered with both a masterful flow and a wise perspective over beats by big time Gambian producer the late MJ.

Since formation in 2000, the group still remains one of the most versatile rap group in the country’s hip-hop block.

Few months after formation, BMG quits the group and Da Poetic X collaborated with Peppa House and setup a rap squad called "Da Bull Doff Army". Few months later Sensitive joined the squad then called the Big U, and also invited Bilal to join, who by that time was working with Yetteh J.

At the time, Bilal has already started making a name for himself in freestyle sessions. Both Sensitive and Big U quitted shortly after Bilal joined. By 2003, Da Bull Doff Army started its full time operation, thus preaching real hip-hop and started attacking rap-mbalah artistes, accusing them of misleading the kids with their pornographic lyrics. With all these hardship they managed to make Da Bull Doff Army to be known countrywide.

However, Bilal joined Da Poetic X in 2004, three years later, Da Poetic X splits from Da Bull Doff Army, because their main partners Peppa House was found guilty for breaking Da Bull Doff’s rules.

WHAT’S ON - Promise Land Riddem to be released soon

A reggae-dancehall line-up entitled “Promise Land Riddem”   produce by Dr Olugander of the Gander’s Production will soon be release in the market. Crafted at Bulldorf  Recording studio, the  new line-up featured fourteen other top Gambian artistes . Currently a promo single has been released to some radio stations in the country.

However, this is the latest development embarked upon by Dr Olugander better known the Musical Doctor.

Speaking to What’s On the reggae star disclosed that the main reason behind the initiative is to assist the upcoming artistes especially those, who cannot record their own music stuffs.

According to him, the creation of this new line-up is another milestone in the annals of the entertainment industry.

“We the artist should always inculcate love and unity among ourselves and I think this is a way to achieved that goal. With the number of artiste featured in this line-up ,I  have the firm belief that unity and love will for ever flourished among ourselves and other artist in achieving our aspirations,” he said.

Olugander however, observed that Gambia is full of young talents noting that if given the necessary support they can live up to expectation.

He noted that, I is not a profit making venture or fame, but to involve artistes in conscious and positive agendas.

“ Each artiste featured in this line-up will have his or her share when the final work is completed. So I want to tell reggaes fans to support their artistes featured in the line-up and support them to the fullest. forward for ever,” he added.

The Gambia’s only musical doctor, Dr Olugander, has been  awarded  the 2007 reggae song award with his track titled “Run Da Place”.

Dr Olugander is one of the leading reggae artiste in the country. He is well known for his versatile skills and stage
performance.

Olugander was among 21 other personalities who received various prestigious awards.

Organised by Joluv Arts Entertainment based in United Kingdom in collaboration with Gambia Talents Promotions in Atlanta, the
award night was designed to reward and promote distinguished Gambians who have made tremendous efforts in their respective
areas.

In an interview with What’s On, Dr Olugander said it was a pleasure to have received an award which he described as worthy
and timely.

“This award shows how my fans like my music because without them I can’t do anything. There is this proverb which says “the
greatness of a king depends on the number of people he rules,” he said.

He thanked the organisers and cooperate sponsors like Africell for their support to the  development of The Gambian music

All is set for Miss Willies 2008

Preparations are currently on high gear for the annual Miss Willies beauty pageant contest slated for Saturday 28th March,
2008 at Lamin Village.

Organised by Champion Sounds Promotions, the day is designed to showcase the country’s  rich cultural heritage and to further
strengthen peace and oneness through entertainment.

Speaking to What’s On, DJ  Lamin Cham of Champion Sounds Promotions said  six beautiful  young ladies would contest in the
event . According to him the day is expected to be graced by high profile personalities.

“This beauty  pageant contest will also witness live performances by various top Gambian artists, among them, Chamajeng,
Sambou Suso aka the golden voice of Manding, Lamarana Jallow, among others,” he said.

According to him, it is going to be a fun-filled event in the history of Miss Willies.
