Current Feed ContentRole of Youth in IslamThursday, September 25, 2008 Ever since youth have been playing a pivotal role in the propagation and spreading of Islam all over the world. Thus the role of youths in Islam cannot be over emphasised. It is said that during the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) young people were always at the forefront even during jihad (Muslim Holy war). They made a lot of selfless sacrifices to see to it that Islam grew speedily and defeat its enemies. It was also said that Muslim youths at the time always gave up their lives for the sake of the religion. Well Muslim youth in The Gambia are also playing their role as future hopes of this great and righteous religion. In this Holy Month of Ramadan for instance particularly during these last ten days the young people are playing a very important role in our mosques. Youth are found in almost all the major mosques in the Greater Banjul Area leading prayers through out the night. Before in The Gambia, very few youths were able to able to master the whole Quaran known as (Hafiq Quran) but today many youth in the country can read the whole Quran off head. Young people should continue to rededicate their efforts in the promoting and propagating Islam. Young people are able, strong and active thus the need to continue play their role in Islam as the religion needs them. As future Islamic leaders, Muslim youth must continue to follow in the footsteps of the current prominent scholars. This is definitely attainable if young people change their attitude towards Allah. Youth should continue to say their prayers regularly if they are to be sure of entering paradise. As Muslim youths we must always intensify our efforts and always defend this powerful religion of ours. Author: By Nfamara Jawneh Wahtani Ajuma: In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful![]() Friday, September 19, 2008 Ramadan, the Holy Month (cont’d) Last week our discussion was centered on the supplementary prayers after sighting of the moon. It is followed by saying the intention of the fast. The next step is the taking of the early morning meal before day break. This early morning meal is taken near to the Fajr, (early morning) prayers. This meal is allowed in Islam so that the one fasting for the whole day will have at least something to keep him up during the day. Islam is concerned about working to earn a living Since people go to work for the maintenance of their families\ and for the fact that when fasting you feel very lazy. Islam has given us permission to eat early in the morning so that we will be able to work properly. The prophet Mouhammed(PBUH) said “there is blessing in the early morning meal so it is good to have it. Islam does not allow the one who is fasting to just spend his time sleeping. He has to help in the development of his country by working. A sahaba called Zaidun Ibnu Sabit narrated that they once had their early morning meal during the month of Ramadan with prophet Mouhamed and after the meal, they went to the mosque for Fajr prayers. After praying, Zaidun asked the prophet “how many minutes is it between the time that we had our early morning meal and the Fajr prayers? The prophet replied “the time should be about the time you take to recite 50 verses from the holy Quran’ when they checked it, the 50 verses corresponded to sura Wal Mursalat, which is the 77th sura of the holy quran. This is to explain that since this sura has 50 verses, the time it takes to recite the whole sura is the time between eating the early morning meal and praying for the Fajr. It is about 10 minutes. Islam does all this to facilitate your fasting for the day. If you eat a few minutes before the early morning prayers, then you will not be hungry during the day. These are some people who have the intention to fast but because of illness, they cannot. Old age and the feeble. Human beings reaching a stage in their age are not permitted to fast. The prophet Mouhammed said: “the life span of my people is between 60 and 70 years, anything beyond that is additional. Although there are some old aged who are strong and can fast. The sick: those with disease that are incurable, like diabetes who cannot stay for the whole day without food are exempted from fasting. The old age and the one with incurable disease have to give the amount of food they should have eaten, if they were fasting to the needy, everyday, during the whole mouth of Ramadan. Expectant mothers who fear harm on them, or the expectant child in her womb. Pregnant women are regarded as sick. A woman who is sucking her baby and is afraid that fasting would be detrimental to her or her baby, or both her and the child. However the Malickias uphold that if babies could be fed by women, other than their mothers, those mothers must fast. According to Ibnu Umar and Ibnu Abass, the pregnant women and sucking mothers who are unable to fast are to feed the needy everyday of Ramadan and pay for missing dates. Abu Hanifata and Abu Ubaida stated that the women mentioned above are to repay the missing dates but need not feed the needy. According to Imam Shaafiyu, such women are to feed the needy and fast the missing dates when they regain their normal health. On such women some scholars stated that the suckling mother must pay back days missed and feed the needy, but the pregnant shall pay but shall not feed the needy. These are differences by some various scholars. This sacred month must be honoured by even those who are not fasting and are exempted from fasting. No muslim is allowed to eat or drink openly. Fasting women must not be tormented or forced to do things beyond their means by husbands or any body else. Those travelling on mini buses and vans and cars must avoid smoking passengers in their vehicles. Please avoid spitting in mosques, in the rooms and other places. We remind you that swallowing saliva does not nullify fasting. Fasting is not to keep yourself thirsty and hungry only. It is here to discipline the human being. The one who is fasting must avoid anything that can spoil his fast. His hands must fast, meaning he should not take with his hands anything that is not his own. His feet should also fast by not going to any place for enjoyment while fasting. The one fasting should avoid sitting and discussing about people. As stated in sura Nahl V.125: “ Invite all to the way of the Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching. And argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. For thy Lord Knowth best. Who have strayed from his path, and who receive guidance.” He should not speak of any evil while fasting. It is stated in the Holy Quran in Sura Nisai V.148 “Allah loveth not the shouting of evil words in public speech, except by one who has been wronged for Allah is He who heareth and knowth all things” Even backbiting and laughing at your fellow muslim brothers is not allowed in Islam, especially during Ramadan. Sura Hujarat V.11 states: “O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others. It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others. It may be that, the (latter) are better than the former, nor defame not be sarcastic to each other. Nor call each other by(offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one). After he has believed; And those who do not desist are indeed doing-wrong.” He should not look down on others and should not feel superior to others as stated in sura Nahl V.23: “Undoubtedly Allah doth know what they conceal. And what they reveal, verily he loveth not the arrogant.” The Prophet Mouhammed said: “when fasting and talking bad things behind others, then you are just making yourself hungry and thirsty because your fasting will not be accepted by Allah the Almighty.” To avoid all these habits, you have to recite the holy Quran or engage yourself in other prayers that you know of at home or in the office. It will keep you busy during the fasting period. We are happy that many offices now have places where people can say their prayers. So we advise especially women to put on dresses that cover their bodies in the office especially when praying. They should double their efforts in worshipping Allah during this fasting period, so that Allah will answer their prayers. Since there is freedom of religion in our country, muslims can pray easily without any disturbance. May Allah the Almighty give us guidance throughout this fasting period. Mariama Ceesay Author: Madi M.K.Ceesay Source: Meeting In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most MercifulFriday, August 01, 2008 Message for the mosque (cont’d) The message in the mosque is for the worshippers to be guided on the right path, so that in turn, they can spread it to other people to follow the words of Allah the Almighty. The Prophet Mouhammed (SAW) was the first to come from the “School of Allah.” Then Allah sent the Prophet Mouhammed to spread the message to his people. Sura Ahzab V.45-47: states “O prophet! Truly we have sent thee as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings. And a warner. And as one who invites to Allah’s (grace) by his leave, and as a lamp spreading light. Then give the glad tidings to be believers, that they shall have from Allah a very great bounty.” The holy Quran stated in many verses, emphasising that the prophet (SAW) should continue spreading the message forever. Sura Hajj V.67:”.......But do thou invite (them) to thy Lord: for thou out assuredly on the right way.” Sura Qasas also states in 87-88:” Let no one turn you away from Allah’s revelations after they have been revealed to thee: and invite (men) to thy Lord and be not of the company of those who join Gods with Allah. And call not, besides Allah, on another God. There is no God but He. Everything (that exists) will perish except His Face. To Him belongs to command. And to Him will ye (All) be brought back. “Sura Ra’ad V.36 states:”..... say I am commanded to worship Allah, and not to join partners with Him. Unto Him do I call, and unto Him is my return.” The profession of Prophet (Mouhammed) (SAWS) on earth was to spread the message of Allah to the people: to follow the right path, to leave what was forbidden and follow the right way set up by the Almighty. Prophet Mouhammed continued this way until after his death, and the Almighty rewarded him. This verse marks the end of prophet Mouhammed’s (SAWS) mission on this earth. In Sura Maida V.3 states: “This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you, And have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” The Prophets who came before Prophet Mouhammed (SAWS) were spreading the same message. To follow the right path and Allah’s command. Sura Araf V. 59 states about Prophet Noah and his people. It said: “We sent Noah to his people He said: O my people! Worship Allah! ye have no other God but Him. I fear for you the punishment of a dreadful day.” Prophet Salih was sent to his people to spread Allah’s message stated in Sura Araf V.73: “To the Thamud people (we send) Salih one of their own brethren He said: “O my people ! Worship Allah, ye have no other God but Him........” “To every people that passed on this earth, I have send a messenger to spread my call (Allah) to worship me.” Sura Nahl V.36 states: “For we assuredly sent amongst every people a messenger, (with the command) serve Allah, and eschew evil. Of the people were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).” To be able to spread the word of Allah that was done by the prophets; the particular person should have the following: - should understand the message before being able to spread it. -to believe in the message that it is from Allah, if not your mind can change. The belief should be in side your heart; noting can turn you away from this message. -to have connection with Allah; to believe that He is always seeing you and by your side. If one of these mentioned is missing then the message will not be properly spread. Only knowledge can help you to be able to do this. Knowledge is the key to any work, especially the work of the Almighty. -Since you always mentioned Allah’s name to spread His word, you should be strong and clear in what you say. Also when quoting the Prophet Mouhammed (SAWS). If your preaching is not based on concrete evidence, it can create problems for you, because it is not based on the Holy Quran or hadith of the Prophet (SAWS). According to Imam Ibnu Hambal “knowledge is necessary to man as he needs oxygen. It is more valuable that eating and drinking. “One can eat and drink once a day, but oxygen is needed throughout his life time.” Allah said he is a “learned scholar”. Sura Zumar V:46 states: “Say O Allah creator of the heavens and the earth! knower of all that is hidden and open.......” knowledge is valuable to Allah. He even swear on the pen as in Sura Qalam V.1: “Nun, by the pen and by the (record) which (men) write.” The first creature on earth Adam was taught by Allah. Sura Baqara V.31-32: “And the taught Adam the names of all things, then He placed them before the angels and said: “Tell me the names of these if ye are right. They said Glory to thee of knowledge. We have none; save what thou hast taught us; in truth it is thou who art perfect is knowledge and wisdom.” All the Prophets of Allah have knowledge, even the last Prophet, Mouhammed (SAWS) was learned, to be able to preach to the people. Sura Iqraa states in V.1-4: “Proclaim (or read) in the name of thy Lord and cherisher, who created-created man, one of a leech-like clot. Proclaim! And thy Lord Is most bountiful, He who taught (the use of) the pen.” Those who have knowledge of Allah and make use of it are different from the ignorant ones. Sura Zumar V.9 states: “Say; Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.” The one spreading the message should not add or subtract anything, should not tell lies to gather people or for money. He should be straight forward and do it as done by Prophet Mouhammed (SAWS). Sura Kahf V.29 states: “Say, the truth from your Lord, let him who will, believe and let him will reject.....” Author: DO Youth Enlightened on Islam, Migration, others![]() Thursday, July 31, 2008 A day conference aimed at broadening the knowledge and understanding of youths on the teachings of Islam, migration and other challenges being faced by them was held recently at The Gambia Senior Secondary School in Banjul. The forum, which brought together many Muslim youths from the greater Banjul Area and Muslim youth organisations, was organised by one Alieu Jawara a Gambian youth residing in Canada. Speaking at the occasion, Mr.Jawara said that the migration of people’s minds from being obedient to disobedient and the movement of people from one place to another are all critical forms of migration affecting the youth of the nation. He said it is not worth it for people to venture on a dangerous journey like illegal migration in the name of looking for greener pastures. “Greener pastures of which you are not even sure of attaining,” he said. According to him, consequences of illegal migration for the victims are too high. The venture, he said, is not only making youths lose their lives but their religion as well. “The purpose of man on earth is only to worship Allah and nothing else,” he stated. He added that during the journey the adventurers normally miss many prayer times, which he said is not in their interest, both in this world and hereafter. Mr, Jawara also lamented the fact that the habit of some Muslims behaving as non-Muslims is also causing a lot of problems in the world. He reminded the youths that Islam is the religion that supersedes all other religions as said in the Holly Qura’n. Other speakers at the occasion included the representatives of the Federation of The Gambia Muslim Student’s Organisation (FEGAMSO) and Ansar Brotherhood. Brother Mustapha Barry, president of FEGAMSO, gave a brief history of this association. According to him, the association was founded in 1995 and is the umbrella body of all school based Islamic clubs and societies in the country. It aims to promote and propagate the teachings of Islam. He called for closer collaboration between Muslim youth organisations in the country and for them to put their efforts together to achieve their objectives. Ansar Brothers for their parts, said that their association is a network of believers who believes in helping others. Shaikh Tijan Cham an Oustass advised young people to always respect their parents and know that there is no other God worthy of worshipping other than Allah. He also encouraged them to work hard at school because no nation can develop without education especially an Islamic education.Author: By Nfamara Jawneh Source: Picture: Alieu Jawara The Role and contribution of Islam in promoting the Culture of peace in a Globalized WorldFriday, July 04, 2008 (Part 7)
How can Muslims contribute in Promoting Peace in the 21stcentury? As defined above, globalization is based on secular materialistic philosophy whose main target is to marginalize religion, especially Islam and Muslims. But as we said earlier, globalism as consciously designed is different from globalism as unconsciously unfolding. The Tijaniyyah mystic Order describes the Prophet in their system of invocation as “the Opener of what was closed). The positive forces of globalism must be read against the back ground of the Prophet being the opener of what was closed (al-Fatih li ma Ughliq). As a result, neither ignoring the forces of globalism nor adopting it lock stock and barrel will be the solutions. So, given the problems outlined above, in order for Muslims to promote peace, the writer would suggest the following: 1- Embarking on a process of restoration of Muslim self-dignity and self- Integrity. This is because an internally weak and hopeless individual cannot effectively promote peace. The way to do that is to cure our disease of loss of adab by valuing knowledge and the learned, respect hierarchical authority and revitalize and develop ethics of disagreement as were established by our upright ancestors 2- As the Prophet showed us a gentle, calm rational respond to the provocation of an aggressor. The Qur’an says: and when the foolish addresses them (with bad words) the y reply back with words of salam (peace), al-Furqan 25: 63 Such an approach necessitates perfection of the art of debate and dialogue. I emphasis perfection here for a simple reason that in order for one to engage in effective and productive dialogue, one needs to read extensively to be intellectually well-equipped to know the strategies and tactics of those with whom he dialogue, especially if we know that dialogue according to the Prophet never mean compromising one’s fundamentals and especially when we also know that the other party does not just dialogue but they dialogue based on a strategy of the world mind game for which they have been highly equipped Based on the Qur’anic and prophetic method of the necessity of the balance of powers, Muslims can also contribute to peace by seriously getting ready for deterrent engagements of self-defense. The Prophet showed us that demands of the flesh satisfying vices like greed must be curbed. The greedy if not forcefully deterred will continue to prey on the weak. So, constant readiness for defensive war can contribute to the world peace. It was in this vein that the Prophet warned us of wahan (extreme love of this world and fear of death to preserve dignity) Author: By Dr. Omar Jah Jr Study on Women and Islam Commissioned![]() Friday, July 04, 2008 A research study conducted by Dr. Omar Jah PhD Senior
Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the The study, titled Action Aid Study on Women and Islam, aims among other things to clearly demonstrate the position of Islam pertaining to gender and to challenge some misgivings about Islamic gender policies. The findings of the survey results show that the professional level, responses from Islamic religious leaders vis-à-vis Islamic law and covering of a women’s face in public, obligation of the female circumcision in Islam, and Islamic law and women’s inheritance of land are somehow disturbing. In general, the findings show that although much needs to be done, if the present Gambian gender attitudes and policies are read against the background of the researcher’s theoretical framework, The Gambia can be characterised as a country on the right track. Recommendations of the findings suggest that there is a need for more funding for research like the one being launched in order to bring to the fore the comparison in a more universal sample size. It further suggested that government should establish a bureau comprising a male and female scholars at the level of the Qadi Appeal panel, whose jurisdiction would be to investigate complaints from couples with regard to the abuse of power in divorce or khul. It also highlights the need for capacity building for Qadis as well as strengthening of the recording techniques at Qadi courts in order to facilitate the due process of family law matters. Speaking on the occasion, the author of the report, Dr Jah, said that the study demonstrates that every legal, political, or sociological complication at any age, Islam can give a proper solution if handled properly based on a pure Islamic worldview and agenda. “The issue of gender is cross cutting, and to demonstrate the Islamic perception to the gender discourse a refined handling of the Qur’anic and the Sunni injunctions is need to cause a proper orientation of attitudes and policies,” he said. Dr Jah commended all individuals and institutions who supported him during the research. Participants at the launch of the study all applauded Dr. Omar Jah for a job well done.
