Reliance’s Sukuta Branch inaugurated

Reliance Financial Services Company, one of the most competitive financial service providers in The Gambia, Tuesday, official opened a new branch in Sukuta, IMRES building, during a colorful ceremony, held at the premises, along Sukuta high way.

Delivering the inaugural speech, Buba A Sagnia, deputy director general of immigration, who read the statement on behalf of the Secretary of State for Interior, Ousman Sonko, hailed the financial service provider for their national expansion strategy and their objective of taking banking services to the door-steps of every Gambian.

Guest speaker, SOS Sonko, noted that this great initiative was central to the government’s development agenda, under the able and dynamic leadership of President Jammeh. He went on to advice the management of Reliance not to be complacent, urging them to ensure that there were financial institutions in every part of the country.

SOS Sonko concluded by challenging stakeholders to rally behind Reliance, by opening their own accounts.

The CEO of Reliance Financial Services, Mr Buboucarr Khan, in his welcoming address, thanked the community of Sukuta and its neighborhood for the warm welcome accorded them, adding that: "we are here to empower the community by providing them with services that are second to none."

According to him, amongst the several products that Reliance provides, there is the fact that one could also easily open an account with only D100, as well as encouragement of their client on business management matters, in an effort to increase their productivity.

He finally urged the community to co-operate with Reliance for the social economic development of the country.

Speaking earlier on, the Alkalo of Sukuta, Momodou Lowe Cham, thanked the management of Reliance for opening the branch in their community, and he added: "it will go a long way in reducing the cost of accessing financial services of the kind provided by them.”

Other speakers included the Deputy Governor of Western Region, Sainabou Faal; a youth mobilizer, Dawda Ndure; the director of CCF, Ousman Cham; the NAM of Kombo North, Adama Cham; and a representative of the paramount chief. Also present were religious leaders and a cross section of the society. The vote of thanks was delivered by Fatou Jobe, while the occasion was chaired by Kaddy Jammeh, all of Reliance.

Fandema Kafo hold sensitization workshop

Fandema Kafo, a local community base organisation, over the weekend organised a two-day sensitization workshop, held at Kalabatang Nursery School in Sukuta Nema.
 
During the sessions, members of the organisation brainstormed on various presentation by resource persons, which centred around HIV-AIDS, child right, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, crime prevention, gender, democracy, equality, children and the media.

Fatou Faye, President of the Fandema Kafo, in declaring the workshop open, hailed the efforts of the organisation in the course of the past year’s. She stated that  the organisation’s groomed children football team and drama group were playing an important role towards the organisation’s aims and objectives.

Moriba Suso, secretary general of the organisation, in his welcoming address said his organisation, which consisted of children aged between 6 and 25, was formed in Bundung Borehole and was registered in August 2005 as a youth kafo.

According to him, the organisation was established to put youths on the right course through  sports, drama and other activities. Commenting on the significance of the gathering, Mr Suso noted that it would help members to share ideas and learn new things to be discussed.

He called on donors to assist the Kafo to realise their dreams.  Mariam Kuyateh, a member of the Kafo, who gave the vote of thanks , applauded the leaders of the Kafo for their tireless efforts and generosity towards the organisation.

SYSA Seek Assistance

As works progress at the Sukuta football field, to make the field to a standard playing ground Pointsports on Saturday visited the committee of the Sukuta Youth Sports Association ( SYSA) to find out how is the work going.

The chairman of the association, Mr. Buba Cham, told Point sports that “ we are very particular in developing sports in our region, we have a sponsor for the perimeter by GNOC, Plymouth Banjul Challenge Rally, and Asset, we spend about D330, 000 for the perimeter which is already near completion ”. He said, “ but we are still looking for assistance to make the grass in the field that’s what we lack and we looking for sponsorship we are calling on everybody, the private sector and individuals to assist for the betterment of sports”.

Mr. Cham also mentioned the plans that the committee has for the development of the pitch which is for not only playing football but other sports too.

“We want to have a track lane for the athletes so that students will have access to train and don’t need to go anywhere else”.

He then thanked all sponsors for helping them to fence the field.

“ I’m not forgetting about the community of Sukuta and the players they are always with us on a voluntary basis to make sure that the work is done.”

D2 million Mosque opened at Sukuta Banni

A new mosque with an interior capacity of more than a thousand worshippers was opened at Sukuta Banni ward, in Sukuta, Kombo North, on Friday, 14th March, 2008. The modern edifice which replaced the previous mud-block structure was financed by Gambian businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Sanna Fatty, of Samikoto village, Kantora.  Mr. Jaiteh would not say how much he spent on the project, but Deputy Imam Sulayman Sabally believes it is more than D2 million dalasi.

The opening ceremony on Friday was attended by prominent religious leaders and thousands of worshippers from all over the country.  The Imam of Sukuta Central Mosque, Alhaji Ismaila Beye, who laid the foundation stone of the project six months ago, also led the inaugural Jumma prayer. In his sermon, Imam Beye emphasised the importance of the five daily prayers in Islam, saying that prayer is the principal distinction between believers and non-believers.

Two members of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council, Ba Kawsu Fofana and Essa Darboe, both commended Mr. Sanna Fatty for using his resources in the service of Allah and appealed to other Muslims to emulate his example.  They said the building of mosques and educational institutions have unlimited blessings from Allah. They also stressed the importance of Muslims observing their prayers in mosques when ever they can.

The Imam of Sukuta Banni, Alhaji Yaya Saidy, and other members of the local mosque committee, have expressed immense joy at the completion of the mosque which Mr. Jaiteh offered to build when the local the community was trying to raise funds to replace the small mud-block structure they have used for the past eight years.

Mosque Committee Chairman Mr. Alhamdou Conteh, told our reporter that now that the mosque is complete, the Committee is appealing to other Muslims and NGOs in the country to help bring water and electricity supplies to the building.  He said all the electrical installations have been made but the mosque needs to be connected to the grid.

Sukuta-Moomerland Association Clocks 20

Following years of fruitful collaboration, Sukuta-Moomerland Circle of Friends Association last Wednesday celebrated its 20th anniversary at a colorful ceremony held at the Sukuta Upper Basic School.

Moomerland Circles of Friends Association, a non-profit organisation, came into contact with Sukuta Upper Basic School twenty years ago with the aim of helping children and young people especially in the area of education and development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Holger Schneider, head of Sukuta-moomerland Circle of Friends Association, underscored the association’s drive towards helping children and young people attain to their basic educational needs.

“Moomerland is a non-profit organisation with the aim of helping children and young people especially in the areas of education and development”, he said

In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Sarja Sanneh, Principal of Sukuta Upper Basic School, highlighted the Association’s contributions in uplifting the school for the past 20 years. This, he said, ranges from infrastructural development, telephone lines, electricity, and the introduction of Information technology to the school among other things.

He also used the occasion to thank their friends for their contribution to the development of the school. He expressed hope that the fruitful relationship that exists between the two will go from strength to strength.

Also speaking earlier, Ousman Mama K. Bojang, Chairman of Sukuta-Moomerland Circle of Friends Association, described the relationship between the two as a genuine one noting that with such relationship, a lot of dividends will be yielded.

Sukuta-Moomerland Association is 20

Sukuta Moomerland Circle of Friends Association, last Wednesday celebrated its 20th anniversary at a ceremony held in Sukuta Upper Basic School.

In his welcoming remarks, Sarja Sanneh, principal of Sukuta Upper Basic School, highlighted the association’s achievements revolving around infrastructural development, telephone lines, electricity, introduction of information technology in the school, among others. 

He commended their friends from Moomerland for their efforts in the development of Sukuta UBS and expressed hope that their friendship will grow from strength to strength.

For his part, Ousman Mama K. Bojang, chairman of Sukuta Moomerland Circle of Friends Association, described 1989 as the turning point for Sukuta UBS development and progress since it established link with moomerland friends from Germany. Since the formation of this link, he added, there has been considerable achievements in the provision of school and learning materials including the construction of a Kitchen, library, fence, assembly hall, and among other things in the school.

Aolger Schneider, head of Sukuta Moomerland Circle of Friends Association, said his association is a non-profit organisation with the aim of helping children and young people especially in the areas of education and development. He promised to continue supporting Sukuta UBS.

Mr Schneider also presented a cheque for 5,000 Euros to the Sarja Sanneh, principal of the school for the construction of the Sukuta UBS library with 40 jerseys, socks and shorts to Sukuta UBS football team on behalf of their sports club in Moomerland, Germany.

Other speakers include Abdou Badjie, Governor Western Region, Adama Cham, National Assembly member for Kombo North, Omar Ndure, President of Gambia Teachers Union, Lamin K Camara, cluster monitor for Sanchaba Sulay Jobe Lower Basic School, who represented the Regional Directorate (region 2), Momodou Low Cham, Alkalo of Sukuta, among others.

Comium new showroom opened in Sukuta

Comium Gambia limited, in its pursuit to expand and serve in the telecommunication sector in The Gambia at a greater capacity, on thursday opened a new customer care center in Sukuta, Kombo North, Western Region, at a colourfull inauguration ceremony held at the Village.

Comium subscribers around the area are expected to enjoy from the company’s facilities such as prepaid services, direct customer care products and various other solutions that are also offered at its headquarters, along the Kairaba Avenue in Serrekunda.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Fatim Badjie, Senior communications officer at Comium, said the opening of the new comium customer care branch in sukuta would not only support and promote the welfare of their customers in Sukuta but also the entire Kombo North district.

Ms Badjie informed the exciting crowd with pride that Comium will continue to contribute immensely to the success of its customers all around the country.

“Since its arrival in the GSM service industry in The Gambia”, she noted, “comium has being offering and will continue to offer services with difference, which are acclaimed by most of its users as being second to none.

For his part, Momodou Cham, Alkalo of Sukuta, expressed, on behalf of his Village, appreciation to comium for the initiative in bringing the services of Comium to their doorsteps. He added that the facilities provided by comium in sukuta will help his village and its surroundings.

Alkalo Cham prayed for the continued sustainance of the peace, unity and stability that the Gambia is known.

Sulay Jah, comium staff at the new Sukuta Branch, delivered the vote of thanks. He expressed his company’s appreciation to the community of Sukuta for the warm reception accorded to them.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Harouna Drammeh a media consultant.

Nokia Mobile phones and sim cards were given to the Alkalo and  Imam of the Village as a token of appreciation.

Comium Opens New Branch In Sukuta

There is no gainsaying that Comium Gambia Limited is growing in leaps and bounds in The Gambia’s mobile telephone industry. This is as a result of the opening of yet another new branch by the company in Sukuta, Kombo north.

Comium has, since its inception some nine months ago, been able to maintain a fast rate of subscriber growth and very high quality of services and is no doubt setting the pace in The Gambia’s mobile industry.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Haruna Drammeh, a member of the Comium family, said the opening of the new branch in Sukuta would not only support and promote the welfare of their customers in Sukuta but also the entire Kombo North constituency.

Mr. Drammeh noted with pride that Comium would continue to contribute immensely to the success of its customers.

“Since joining the mobile industry nine months ago, Comium has been offering and will continue to offer services with a difference that are acclaimed by most users as being second to none”, he added.

Also speaking earlier, Alhagie Momodou Cham, Alkalo of Sukuta expressed appreciation to Comium for the initiative; adding that the facility would greatly aid Comium customers in Sukuta and its surrounding villages. 20,000 boost for Sukuta women farmers

The Future of Sukuta, through its parent body, Friends of Sukuta, a charitable organisation based in Sweden, on Sunday launched a D20,000 project aimed at kickstarting the building of a perimeter fence at the women's horticultural garden in Sukuta, along the Brufut Highway. The launching was done at a ceremony held at the garden.

Speaking on the occasion, Momodou Badjie, local coordinator, said the concept of the project was as a result of a request made earlier on by the women for his organisation to render assistance in fencing the first phase of the garden which is wide open and unprotected.

According to him, his organisation was established in 2001, as a result of an exchange visit between the founding pioneers from Sweden and Sukuta lower basic school.  He added that since then 120 students at various levels of education have benefited from sponsorship from the organisation.

He then urged the community to take a firm stance and take ownership of the project, while assuring them of his organisation’s continued support to help develop and improve the lives of the local people.

For his part, Ebrima S Cham, the village development committee chairman, expressed delight with the timely intervention of the donors in the community.

He further went on to appeal to the donors and NGOs in the community to further help in empowering the women, adding that currently, 250 women have registered in the garden but only 75 of them are participating due to the lack of enough water, electricity, seeds and fertilizer, coupled with the lack of protective fence of the garden.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Abbass Cham, Secretary to the organisation, Marissa Jatta, President, Sukuta women’s garden. The ceremony was graced by the Alkalo of Sukuta, Alhajie Momodou NCO Cham, and also present where Ara Jatta, Yai Compin, and the beneficiaries.

Sukuta Resident Given Bail

Ebrima Solly, a resident of Sukuta, was yesterday granted bail in the sum of D20,000 for receiving an item under false pretences.

Ebrima was on Tuesday arraigned before Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Janneh for obtaining a motorcycle from one Amadou Bojang on promise to pay him D15,000 only to renege on it later.

He’s expected back in court later this month.
