No room for gays in The Gambia

africa » gambia » tallinding
Monday, May 19, 2008

President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, on Thursday, gave less than 24 hours (until last week Friday) ultimatum to homosexuals, drug dealers, thieves and other criminals, to leave The Gambia or face serious consequences if caught.

The president equally warned all those who harbour such individuals to kick them out of their compounds, noting that a mass patrol will be conducted on the instructions of the IGP and the director of the Gambia Immigration Department to weed bad elements in society. “Any hotel, lodge or motel that lodges this kind of individuals will be closed down, because this act is unlawful. We are in a Muslim dominated country and I will not and shall never accept such individuals in this country”.

He stated that a law is in place regarding this unlawful acts tougher than the Iranian laws and warned those involve in this infamous activities to desist from them. He maintained that foreigners are highly welcome into The Gambia, but not bad elements.

The Gambian leader made this remarks on Thursday at the Buffer Zone ground in Tallinding,  while addressing thousands of supporters at a victory celebration rally, as part of the ‘Dialogue with the People Tour’. Opportunities for youths engaging skilled jobs top the agenda of the meeting.

President Jammeh said a lot opportubities have been provided by his administration, but yet few have been utilised by Gambians. He pointed to the public markets within KM which are dominated by foreigners, saying “all stores belonging to Gambians and rented to forigners would be seized. We are tired of investing for only foreigners to the benefits. Today, look at the NYSS as compared to when it was newly created; Gambians have ran away from it and we provide a number of young people people for skilled training. This means that Gambians are difficult to help,” he said.

The president called for attitudinal change without which poverty would remain elusive. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the attitude of Gambians and urged them to make the best use of the opportunities provided by the government. “Today, the highest concentration of foreigners is in the KM. Government from 1994 to date has invested over US$100 million in projects, but 95% of the bebefits are enjoyed by foreigners,” he said.

President Jammeh then reiterated his back to the land call to enable the country achieve food self-sufficiency and called on Gambians to change their attitudes and work towards national development.

Yankuba Touray, the secretary of state for Fisheries, Water Resources and National Asembly Matters, highlighted the importance of the back to the land call.

“If the call [president’s call] was answered at that time, the case would not have been what it is today”.

He called on parents to encourage their children to engage in skilled jobs, noting that governmnet cannot employ everybody.

Yankuba Colley, the mayor of KMC, handed over a cheque for D311,000 and D202,000 to SoS Ismaila Sambou as a counterpart contribution for the transformation of Charle’s Jow Junior School into a senior secondary school and for a road project in Serrekunda.

Mayor Colley assured the president of his council’s support at all times.

Other speakers at the rally included Ebrima Badjie, the Alkalo of Tallinding, Babou Sonko, APRC ward chairman, Amie Jatta, a women mobiliser.

At the end of the ceremony, President Jammeh, Yama Njie, an APRC supporter, Momodou Torro Darboe, a nominated councillor at KMC, Aji Rohey Sanyang, a cleaner at KMC, Edrissa Njie, manager of KMC cleansing services, Banjul Breweries and The Gambia Police Force were awarded certificates for their outstanding efforts towards the cleanliness of the municipality.

Here we go again with President Jammeh playing prosecutor, judge and jury. While he is at it, he should add lying, cheating and other immoral acts to the list. He should go ahead and tell landlords to evict tenants who lie, but wait a minute. He may be kicked out himself as he has made so many promises that tuned out to be lies as he has not fulfilled them.

On a more serious note, the Gambia is predominantly a Muslim society and Islam influences most of our cultures and traditions. Homosexual activities are definitely not a part of our culture but getting involved with what people do in the privacy of their bedrooms is completely idiotic. There are bigger and far more important issues facing Gambians than what people do in their bedrooms. The prices of basic commodities are going up and people are struggling to feed their families and instead of tackling such issues, Yahya is talking about gay people. I don’t blame him though, I blame the throngs of people who are running after him and suffering under his regime.

I’ll end by quoting Surat Baqarah from the Quran, verse 256, where God said “There is no compulsion in religion; truly the right way has become clearly distinct from error; therefore, whoever disbelieves in the Shaitan and believes in Allah he indeed has laid hold on the firmest handle, which shall not break off, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.”…..Yahya Jammeh cannot certainly force gay persons to stop their gay activities by force, rounding them up or evicting them from their homes. Even God has allowed people to choose freely of what they want to do with their lives.

THE GAMBIA HAS A VERY CIVILIZED CONSTITUTION THAT ENABLES CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS & ALL TYPES OF RELIGION BELIEVERS TO LIVE SIDE BY SIDE PEACEFULLY WITHOUT DISCRIMINATION.

JAMMEH BLUFFS AS IF HE IS THE CREATOR OF MEN NOT KNOWING THAT HE IS COMITTING A SIN TO PUNISH OR TAMPER WITH GAYS.. HE'S DOWNFALL HAS ALREADY STROKE ONE.

GAMBIA IS NOT A MUSLIM COUNTRY BUT A DEMOCRATIC NATION THAT HAS GAIN ITS INDEPENDENCE REGARDLESS TO ANY RELIGION THEREIN.

Regarding the national development and the balance of pawer in APRC government, i am opposition to Jammeh's regim, but i am fully behind him for this decision he has made, which is not allowing the Gay activities in the Gambia. It is unislamic, unhealthy and dangerous, it brings clamity to the country.Mr president, you are 100% rigth to punish those who are practising homo sexuality in the Gambia. The Gambia belongs to the Gambians, therefore, we have to put our national interest and dignity before any so called the western democracy priod!! We don,t want Gays in the Gambia !!!

I agree with the president. he should rid the beautiful Gambia of all of its ailments but he is wrong to solely pick on gay people..although i am not prejudice to anyone on the planet i really dont like the whole gay scene at all but lets face it what one guy does tnother in the privacy of his own homw is down to him, i mean who are they hurting?? I feel there are greater issues to be ressolved such as the price of rice and the dam bumsters that frequent the tourist areas, i have been visiting the gambia for over 10 years and planning to permanently move there later this year and one thing that really does get my back up is the lay abouts and beggers that constantly keep on and on at the europeans...The Gambia's future is tourism and he should concentrate on that and make sure that every single visitor enjoys the wonderful country and its warm hearted people. Oh and maybe helping get rid of malaria would be a election winner too..

Peace to you all

Mr Johnny if u think that the Gambia is for sale to gays ,then think twice.Do not visit the Gambia or settle there if u r gay. Your money should be given to your drug adicts and homeless junkies that go round your streets begging and robbing people.I have a friend robbed in London last week a comrade killed in Germany simply because he is black. U dictate England but not the Gambia.I support the president and if u have any problems about it then,do not come to the Gambia.
