Following a good race reflected by his Curriculum Vitae, the benevolent and beloved late Zambian President will now be given a lap of honour around a number of provincial cities in <country-region w:st="on" ><place w:st="on" >Zambia</place></country-region> before his state funeral on 3rd September. No doubt his national anthem will be sung and many flags flown, if even at half mast, around his native Zambia as hosts of Zambians and numerous admirers the world over mourn the loss of a great soul.

Many say late President Mwanawasa was a great man and a great leader. It is said that throughout his life the late Mwanawasa fought for the good of humanity.

He was born in 1948, received primary as well as secondary education in <country-region w:st="on" >Zambia</country-region> where he also obtained a law degree at the <place w:st="on" ><placetype w:st="on" >University</placetype> of <placename w:st="on" >Zambia</placename></place> in 1973. He practiced law from 1974 to 1991 when he retired following his appointment as Vice President of Zambia.

He was well known as an ardent advocate of human rights a cause he has always exposed before and during his presidential career. According to records, he even once resigned from the position of Vice-President because of his personal convictions and intolerance for injustice.

In place of injustice he preferred and advocated self-sacrifice in public office, as well as honesty commitment and loyalty to <country-region w:st="on" ><place w:st="on" >Zambia</place></country-region> and Zambians. As president, he had pledged collaboration with all stakeholders to work in honour and integrity for the people of <country-region w:st="on" ><place w:st="on" >Zambia</place></country-region>. In other spheres of human endeavour he has championed the fight against HIV/AIDS and was instrumental in that country achieving a significant drop in the infection rate. He was a strong promoter of gender equality, and in his presidential tenure he appointed more women ministers than at any other time in the political life of the country. In politics, he was in the frontline of the struggle for introducing multiparty politics in <country-region w:st="on" ><place w:st="on" >Zambia</place></country-region>. He won the presidential elections in 2001 and re-elected in 2006. He was an ardent farmer owning at least three farms in the country and was known to go one “leave” between November and December during the planting season to work on his farms.

At the level of government his agricultural policies have produced bumper harvests across the rural areas.

This has been a man therefore of many parts, with strong vision and an interest at heart for the people.

His work has also been recognised both nationally and internationally, another testimony to his greatness. There are no doubt many Zambians who would echo the sentiments of Charles Mwape, a colleague in his movement for Multiparty Democracy Party, who said: “We have lost a great leader and it will be difficult to fill the gap.”

Some African Presidents never had half as much honour, or any honour at all, in their last days; such leaders as Doe and Mobutu of grateful oblivion or ambivalent memory as the case may be. Of striking contrast has been President Mwanawasa of blessed memory, a president to emulate, one who sacrificed and gave a lot to his country. For those who hold that Mwanawasa was committed to justice, honesty and integrity for the common good of humanity, we can only add the prayer that his benevolent and beloved soul rest in perfect peace.

Fri, 29 Aug 2008 06:15:53 GMTObituary Noticehttp://geographicalmedia.com/africa/gambia/article/2008/6/13/obituary-noticeMrs. Marceline Kanjang Njie & family, the Sock family, the family of late Mam Gabarr Njie, Mrs Bilo Njie & family, Mrs Ekwa Jolly Njie & family, the...

Friday, June 13, 2008

Mrs. Marceline Kanjang Njie & family, the Sock family, the family of late Mam Gabarr Njie, Mrs Bilo Njie & family, Mrs Ekwa Jolly Njie & family, the Able-Thomas family, Mrs Mary Tutan Foon & family, the Bahoum family, Mr & Mrs Mbye Savage & family, Alh Chamsu Coker & family, Alh Ousman Jallow & family, the Badjan family, the Bass family, the family of the late Aunty Lena Forster, the Jeng family of Banjul, the Valentine family, regret to announce the death of
Mr Pierre William Francis Njie
(Commonly known as PWF Njie)

which occurred at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital on Thursday 12th June, 2008.

This sad news is extended to The Gambia Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mr Michel Hocheimy & the MFH Group, the Gambia Ports Authority, Banjul Dinner Club, the Fraternal Order of St. Peter and Paul and all relatives and friends at home and abroad.

There will be Wake-Keeping at his residence in Fajara on Monday 16th June, 2008 from 7pm to 9pm. The editors explained to me that the little girl needed help for an operation to her face.

I offered dalasi 10,000 from the Daily Observer kitty and you, dear readers, responded massively the next day. You, dear readers, and we here at the Daily Observer fell in love with Little Jainaba (for that was the little girl’s name) and hoped for the best for her.

And it looked good. Her disfigure tumour was controlled using drugs and then successfully operated on. Little Jainaba became a ‘normal’ laughing child for a while. In Dakar, her mother simply said, “she plays, she laughs and greets people now something she never did before.”

Last week we relayed news of progress and promised you that we will let you know when she returns and we added that we would celebrate.

Sadly, seven days or so later, Little Jainaba’s soul has headed off to Paradise.

We pray for her, and we know Allah will bless her little soul. But we are also sad, very sad. We will miss her, we will miss her return from dakar to The Gambia. We had even organised a vehicle to bring her home. When we asked the Speaker of the National Assembly for her car and driver to bring Little Jainaba home, the Speaker said yes without hesitation. As it is, Allah’s will is that her final resting place should be in our sister country Senegal where she was laid to rest today.

We are also left asking ourselves some very tough questions. Were we right to get so emotional involved in Little Jai’s struggle? Did we act irresponsibly in raising so many people’s hopes when the case initially looked so hopeless? Valid arguments can be made either way, and we will accept humbly the views of our readers.

We share our sorrow with Little Jai’s family and with all our readers, specially those who like the First Lady Madam Zinab Jammeh and the gentleman in the letter opposite, got so moved that they became personally involved. All our fates are in the hands of Allah and we pray that Allah blesses Little Jai and give her soul eternal rest.

Author: DO

Fri, 30 May 2008 04:49:16 GMTObituary Noticehttp://geographicalmedia.com/africa/gambia/article/2008/4/3/obituary-noticeMr. Emmanuel Klu and family, Mr & Mrs. Sam Opoka and family, the Johnson, Riley, Oldfield, Coker, Manneh and Colley families regret to announce the...

Thursday, April 03, 2008

Mr. Emmanuel Klu and family, Mr & Mrs. Sam Opoka and family, the Johnson, Riley, Oldfield, Coker, Manneh and Colley families
regret to announce the passing away of their wife, mother, sister, aunty and cousin

Mrs Agnes Rose Klu-nee Riley

(Affectionately known as Aunty Rose)

Director General of Prisons

which occurred on Monday, 31st March 2008 at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital.
