Notice of Vacancy

Vacant Position of Senior Climate Change Officer

Grade 9 (Head 23, Sub-head 01, Item 06)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified Gambians to occupy the vacant position of Climate Change Superintendent at the Department of State for Forestry and the Environment, State House, Banjul, The Gambia.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Climate Change Superintendent will work as an integral part of the Department of State for Forestry and the Environment Team and will report on a day-to-day basis to the Permanent Secretary. She/He will also work in close collaboration with the National Focal Point of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC Focal Point), The National Focal Point of the Global Environment facility (GEF Focal Point) and other teams that are working on climate change and other Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs).

In addition to the general accountabilities listed above, the Senior Climate Change Superintendent will perform the following duties:

1. Deal with most of the correspondence needs of the Department of State, both nationally and internationally, as they relate to climate change issues;

2. Undertake political outreach on climate change issues, particularly with regard to negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change;

3. Promote regular and informed communication on climate change program of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), including the new climate change funds, within the GEF family and between the GEF Focal Point, the UNFCCC Focal Point and the Department of State for Forestry and the Environment.

Academic and Professional Capacities and Qualities required

• Diploma or equivalent in any climate related sector with at least 5 years of direct relevant experience;

• Knowledge of the technical, scientific and political aspects of climate change;

• Experience and previous participation in global, regional and national climate change assessments

• Experience and participation in operations in climate change teams;

• Excellent oral and written communications skills in English, knowledge of other languages would be desirable;

• Strong organizational and presentation skills

• High degree of motivation, initiative, flexibility, reliability, and responsiveness to changing demands;

• Experience in dealing with a range of stakeholders such as governments, international organizations, development agencies, scientific and technical bodies, NGOs, and indigenous and local communities;

• Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary environment in a collaborative and constructive way;

• An understanding of GEF policies and operations would be a clear advantage

• Possess proven leadership qualities;

• Pass an interview with the Public Service Commission

Salary: Grade 9 of the Government Integrated Pay Scale
