Laba Sosseh Passes Away

Friday, September 21, 2007

Laba Badara Sosseh, the master vocalist of Senegambian Salsa, passed away yesterday at around 03 a.m.

Prior to his death, the late Laba Sosseh had been admitted in a private clinic in Dakar since June 2007. He \t “_blank” distinguished himself as a pioneer of the tradition of venturing into Latin American music called Salsa.
The sad news was announced over RTS, the Senegalese state-owned media, by two musicians Cheikh Tidiane Tall and Salsero Pape Fall, close friends of the deceased.

Laba Badara Sosseh began singing Salsa with the Star Band de Dakar in 1960. He moved to Abidjan and joined Cubano music specialists, the Special Liwanza Band, which recorded for producer Aboudou Lassissi’s Sacodis label.

Born in The Gambia on the 12 of March, 1943, this monument of African music was amongst the first Africans to make an incursion into the international stage. He is survived by 27 children.
