Sidia Jatta Objects to New Security Bill

Hon. Sidia Jatta, National Assembly Member for Wuli west Constituency and one of the leading lights of the opposition National Alliance for Democracy and Development, has expressed strong opposition to the recently amended National Security Agency bill establishing four new security agencies in addition to the National Intelligence Agency.

The new security agency bill, which among others aims to strengthen national security against military and other related threats, was passed by the National Assembly on Monday.

In his contribution to the motion for the amendment of the bill, Hon. Sidia Jatta conceded that The Gambia might be under threat of some kind, the real threat facing the country is poverty of the people.

In Hon. Jatta’s view, the money that should have gone into supplementing efforts into alleviating poverty in the country is going to be pumped into creating four new intelligence agencies in addition to the National Intelligence Agency.

“This is what I call bureacratisation coming down to totalitarisation of our country. A small country like The Gambia, little tiny Gambia, five intelligence agencies in addition to the CID. What is going to happen to the CID? Is the CID going to be integrated into what we called the Criminal Intelligence Agency or what?,” he enquired.

According to the Wuli West parliamentarian, the move is in fact going to increase the threat to the sovereignty of this country because, as he put it, money that should have been used to alleviate poverty, to help develop this country, is going to be invested into bureaucratising intelligence education in this country.

“Such a situation does not help the growth of democracy and freedom in this country. We have fought to become free from colonialism because we want to be ourselves, have a voice and be individuals with dignity to contribute meaningfully towards the development of our country but this cannot be done in fear,” Hon. Jatta noted.

For the Wuli West parliamentarian, The Gambia could become a model in spite of everything but only if such is done away with. “Where ever you turn your back in this country there is somebody watching at you, which is not helpful”.

He went further to express concern about the disappearance of individuals despite the numerous security agencies in the country. “Individuals disappear and nobody knows their whereabouts. People are killed, nobody knows who the killers are and yet we have intelligence agencies or whatever you call it in this country.”

Hon. Sidia Jatta went on to lament: “How many people were killed at gun point and up to date, we don’t know who the culprits are? We have the NIA, the police, paramilitary among others but some four to five years now, individuals have disappeared, others killed and nothing has been said about it”.

You have been attacking the Jammeh administration on all aspects and even dubbed the ongoing infrasturctural development projects as "white elefant projects". And as someone has already pointed out, you are not even being consistant with your so-called analysis. You tend to have the answers to everything. You are a self-proclaimed expert of all trades.

Well, Tell us something, are these your so-called "white elefant project" not necessary and urgently needed in Gambia:

- the numerous door-step schools to educate the gambian child - from primary to higher education, the University of Gambia (a basic human right). Including both govn. and private (incl. the president) scholarships?

- a boost in the national health services - more hospitals and health centres countrywide, with more doctors per head, making health accessible in all corners of The Gambia (a basic human right)?

- better and effeicient state of the art road projects - numerous: e.g. the coastal highway, the north bank road, the dual highway

- the most efficient and well equipped air and seaports in our region?

- a national TV and acessible national Radio station nationwaide?

- improved electricity, with for the first time in our history, electricity for the rural areas and improved clean and fresh water supplies (basic human rights)?

- the coastal erosion project, Banjul Island and all coastal areas have been saved from that catastrophy for a indeed a very long-term basis?

- improved agricultural system - getting towards a more mechanised agric, food sufficiency and self-reliance, an increase in agric productivty. a robust food security system (a basic human right)?

- numerous fisheries facilities like cold storages countrywide, provision of fishing materials and etc?

- an increase in per annum tourist visitors and activities due to improved tourism infrastucture and services, fovourable conditions for the building of more highest quality hotels?

- improved provision of adequate shelter (a basic human right) - favourable conditions for real estate development, the housing projects like Brusubi etc. and etc.?

- a more and robust national security system, that contributes not only to national peace and security but to regional and international peace and security that is commendable worldwide?

- empowerment of women and youths, e.g. the NYSS and etc.?

- the list goes on and on....???

ARE ALL THESE "WHITE ELEFANT PROJECTS"? DOES THE GAMBIA AND GAMBIANS NOT DESERVE THESE DEVELOPMENTS AND SERVICES?

If that is your opinion, then I will say that you have no compassion, what so ever, for Gambians. While you sit in the US comfortably and enjoy all those facilities, you don't want your brothers and sisters in the Gambia to have access to same facilities you are enjoying in a foreign country? That I call, selfishness and egocentrism. One thing is for certain, the majority of Gambians (those whose vote counts) that voted the present administration into office know quite well what they want and derserve. They know the person that is best delivering these essential services they are entitled to. So no self-proclaimed keyboard expert will tell the Gambian people what is good for them. They deserve far more better than cyber expertise. Keep on trying though. It is a land of freedom of speech, as long as you don't step over the boundries.

Bubacarr, thanks for responding to my challenge. Now you have some homework to do can you provide substantiating FACTS on these your assertions or are you just speculating? Are you kidding me? You wrote:

"1) Food and clean drinking water are much more affordable and accessible in 1994 than in 2008."

BUBACARR, ON WHAT FACTORS DO YOU BASE THIS ASSERTION? DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY BOREHOLES AND PIPE WATER HAVE BEEN PROVIDED TO OUR COMMUNITIES INCLUDING THE RURAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1994? AND DID YOU FORGET THE RURAL ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT AND THE LESS BLACK-OUTS NOW IN THE GREATER BANJUL AREA AND THE WESTERN REGION? facts!!

YOU WROTE:
"2 Effective medicine and prescription drugs were much more affordable then than now."

"AFFORDABLE"? YOU ARE SPECULATING AGAIN! WHAT WAS THE average salary IN 1994? 300-500 DALASIS! AND NOW? 500- 1000 DALASIS. SO WHERE DO YOU BASE YOUR THEORY? HOW ABOUT AVAILABILITY OF MEDICINE AND AND THE ACCESS TO A DOCTOR, DID YOU FORGET THAT? BY THE WAY, DO YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE A STATE OF THE ART HIGH QUALITY DRUGS DEPOT IN THE COUTRY now??

YOU WROTE:
"3 Building materials and house rents were much more affordable then than now."

AGAIN: "AFFORDABLE"? BASED ON WHAT FACTORS?

YOU WROTE:
4 Rate of unemployment is much lower in 1994 than in 2008.

HOW MANY EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES DID WE HAVE IN 1994 CAMPARED TO 2008? WHERE ARE YOUR FIGURES? NAME ME JUST A FEW? THE MAIN EMPLOYERS PRIORT JULY 1994, PWD, GPMB, GUC, COOPS, GPTC, NTC, AND ETC, WHERE ALL BANKRUPT AND SOME SOLD BY 1994 DUE TO WIDESPREAD CORRUPTION. EMPLOYEES WHERE BEING LAID DOWN TO NOTHING. SO WHAT EMPLOYMENT RATE ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THE TOURIST INDUSTRY IS EMPLOYING MORE PEOLPLE NOW THAN THEN. THE REASON IS SIMPLE: MORE QUALITY HOTELS ARE BEEING BUILT AND MORE TOURIST ARE VISITING GAMBIA NOW THAN BEFORE DUE TO THE FAVOURABLE INFRASTRUCTURE - ROADS, AIRPORT CAPACITY, HOTEL BEDS CAPACITY, ACCESS TO BASIC SERVICES, ETC.

YOU WROTE:
"5 The percentage of students passing external examinations in primary and secondary schools was much higher in 1994 than in 2007".

WHAT PERCENTAGE? HOW MANY STUDENTS TOOK EXAMS BOTH IN PRIMARY AND SEC SCHOOLS IN 1994 COMPARED TO 2007? INFACT HOW MANY STUDENTS HAD ACCESS TO BOTH PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND SEC SCHOOLS AT THEIR OWN DOORSTEPS WITHOUT HAVING TO CARRY THEIR OWN DESKS AND CHAIRS TO SCHOOL AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF EACH TERM? HOW MANY OF THESE STUDENTS HAD GAMBIA GOVN. SCHORLASHIPS? CAN YOU GIVE ME facts???

YOU WROTE:
"Paying bride price was much easier for young guys then than now. Life expectancy was even higher in 1994 than in 2008."

I HAD TO LAUGH AT THIS ONE. THIS, BUBACARR, IS A CHOICE. THOSE WHO WANT TO ASK FOR BIG AND THOSE WHO WANT TO PLAY BIG, HAVE THEIR OWN CHOICES. THOSE WHO WANT MORE THAN 1 WIFE HAVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS TO FACE. ALL I KNOW GOVN. IS SENSITISING PEOPLE ON SUCH MATTERS. THE PRESIDENT E.G. HAS CAUTIONED GAMBIAN MEN ON SUCH MATTERS AND JOKINGLY SAID HE WILL INTRODUCE EXTRA-WIFE'S TAX. THIS IS A WAY OF TELLING PEOPLE SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT SOMEWHERE. BE AWARE OF IT AND IT IS TO THE INDVIDUAL WHO KNOWS THE STRENGTH OF HIS POCKET AND THE RESPONSIBILITY TO HIS FAMILY.

So you see Bubacarr GAMBIA is greater than 1 individual. Be it you, me, and even JAMMEH and JAWARA. Our people deserve a better quality of life. That does not come easily. First we need all the necessary infrastructure that will enhance all those living standards you are asking for. The questions are:

How can one have a source of living without a job and how can one have a job without a qualification? - EDUCATION (schools)!

How can one work when one is not healthy? NECESSARY HEALTH CARE SYSTEM! BY THE WAY, CHECK OFFICILA WHO FIGURES ON GAMBIA. INFANT MORTALITY IN ON THE DECREASE, LIFE EXPECTANCY IS ON THE INCREASE. MATERNITY SERVICES ARE FREE, only in the Gambia compared to most nations worldwide.

How can peolple work if there are noe conditions created for employees - BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE!

How can people move from place to place,to their jobs to theirs families? how can goods move from place to place for people to access them? GOOD ROADS NETWORKS!

Bubacarr, these are not "WHITE ELEFANT PROJECTS". They are necessary incentives people need to GRADUALLY improve their standards of living. This is how the industrial revolution became a success: THE PROVISION OF NECESSARY INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WILL PAVE WAY FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. This did not happen in just 10-15 years.

Gambia, for now, lacks all the natural resources most of our neighbours are bless with. Despite, the standard of living in Gambia is much more better than most of our neighbours making Gambia the most populated foreign-based ("hustlers") nation in region. FACTS!!

DON'T TAKE THIS PERSONAL: I agree with you that a government should be criticised to perform better. BUT, Bubacarr, CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, not DESCTRUCTIVE CRITICISM makes the difference. Seeing the sun and calling it the moon in the case of what is happening in Gambia is not what will take our country forward. Staying in a foreign country, seeking asylum and tarnishing the image of the WHOLE nation due to the hatred one habours for the Head of State is not what will take the nation forward. In fact it may contribute to bringing it down gradually - conciously this is what many cyber journalist are hoping to achieve.

INSHA ALLAH, they will fail. Righteousness will always prevail.

PS BUBACARR!!

YOU ALSO WROTE:
"So Mr. Koroma, becareful with the kind economic policies you going to put in place in Sierra Leone. Don't just follow the foot steps of your host Yaya Jammeh. Bildings, roads, bridges, vehicles, and weapons only don't improve the standard of living of your people. You need a huge foreign currecy reserve in your central bank. If you have to spend, start by building factories first and get your people employed then you will have a good spring boarb for economic growth. Thank you on behalf of The Gambian people"

WELL, HERE IS WHAT A SIERRA LEONEAN (RESIDING IN AND SEEING & FEELING WHAT IS GOING ON IN GAMBIA) WISHES FOR HIS NATION AND APPEALING TO HIS PRESIDENT: "WHO FEELS IT KNOWS IT", Bob Marley:

CURLED FROM THE DAILY OBSERVER:

"One people

Tuesday, April 08, 2008

Editor,

It is with utmost delight that I learnt about the visit of my honorable president, Dr Earnest Bai Koroma, President of the Republic of the Sierra Leone, to the Gambia.

This visit is especially important for a number of reasons, most important of which is that it will give me and many other Sierra Leoneans the life time opportunity to see a leader we adore from the bottom of our heart. It will also mean that President Koroma will see for himself the style of leadership of President Jammeh, which is what Sierra Leoneans need most today; a leader whose charisma can unite his people, a leader who love his people, and a leader who thinks the best for his people.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Gambians through their president, for according us this chance. I want to assure you of our sense of loyalty to a country we see as our second home. In fact, for many of us this is the home of our children who do not know anywhere other than the Gambia. Again, we are thankful that you have made it possible for us to have a place to lay our heads while our country was on fire.

As we await the arrival of our dear President, Earnest Bai Koroma, I look forward to a massive turnout by not only Sierra Leoneans, but Gambians as well. Let us make the two leaders proud of our unity. Gambians and Sierra Leoneans are one people by all indications- historically, ethnically, religiously, etc.

Abdurrahman Ceesay

Dippakunda"

Well, The Seirra Loenean in The gambia wants Seirra Loene to be like The Gambia. I, a Gambian in U.S, want The Gambia to be like the Unite States of America. How about that?
