World Coverage Rating Explained

Geographical media calculates a rating for all people, companies or organizations (and many other things) which appear in news sources from around the world as an attempt to represent their overall global news activity. We use this rating to rank these people, companies and organizations in their different geographic regions based on where they come from. Three factors are taken into account when calculating the World Coverage Rating:

  • Population: The amount of population in the given country where the news stories were published. We call this Exposure.

  • Percent of Local News: The percent of all front page news stories in which the person or company appears which were first published in the given country. We call this Coverage.

  • Geographical and Geopolitical Distance: The physical distance between the country where the person or company is from and the publishing country and the total number of countries in which they were published. We call this Reach.
