Beveren want to keep Gambian youngster

Belgian Second Division giants, Beveren FC, are doing all they can to keep the Gambian youngster, Ebrahima Sawaneh, with the club, Observer Sports can reveal.

The crafted forward player, who is the  club’s current top scorer, has been the target of many big guns in the Scandinavian country, and Beveren are afraid the youngster might be lured away from the club after their failure to earn a  promotion to the First Division.

“Sawaneh is a player we want to keep. But as it is, it will be very difficult for us to keep him, in light of the fact that there are also other teams who are interested in him.”

“The club will do their best to commit the player on long-term basis,” information posted on the Beveren official website revealed.

Sonko wins League One Player of The Month Award

The Gambia international winger, Edrissa Sonko, has won the January Powerade Player of the Month Award for English League One, Observer Sports has gathered. The Walsall wizard winger was in outstanding form throughout the month.

His brace here at the Banks's Stadium earned his promotion-chasing First Division club a point against Swindon Town, before he netted at Bristol Rovers in a 1-1 draw.

The undoubted highlight of the month was Sonko's goal at home to Gillingham, his fourth goal in six League games, which helped ensure that Walsall beat The Gills and ended the month in the play-off places. The former Real de Banjul ace also put in a fine display in his side’s goalless draw with Leyton Orient.

Edrissa Sonko clinched the coveted award in the face numerous classic players who were also short-listed for the January award.

Danny Coles of Bristol Rovers, Steven Gillespie of Cheltenham Town and Swansea City's Guillem Bauzza were all eyeing the award that is giving to best player of the month.

Chris Kamara, Chairman of the Powerade Player of the Month Awards panel, said: "Edrissa has really come to prominence at Walsall this season. He has been in outstanding form in January and his goals from midfield have come at vital times and helped his side remain unbeaten in the month."

Kamal Ndow changes club

Gambian international forward, Mustapha Kamal Ndow, has landed a new club in the Greece Super League where he is reported to have signed a three-year deal, Observer Sports has gathered.

Reports monitored on West Coast Radio revealed that the Gambian has  moved from Greek Cypriot Club Doxa to mainland Greece where he joined FC Veria.

The tall-lanky striker is reported to have since bagged his first brace for his new club in a recent home fixture against Larissa.

Mustapha Kamal Ndow had previously starred for AEK Larnaca, where he partnered former Gambian skipper Jatto Ceesay before moving to Doxa Drama Katokopia in Cyprus.

Ndow is the second Gambian to play his trade in Greek league, the first being the former Real de Banjul striker, Edrissa Sonko, who now plays for the English First Division side, Walsall.

Njogu Demba joins Tijan at Brann

Njogu Demba joins Tijan at Brann Gambian international striker, Njogu Demba, has teamed-up with Tijan Jaiteh at FC Brann in Norway. The 28-year old talismanic striker has put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal, Observer Sports can reveal. Brann and Demba’s former Danish club, Esbjerg, have agreed on a 9,5 million NOK deal that brings the Gambian-Swedish striker to the Norwegian champions.

 The athletic striker will be eligible to play for Brann on February 1, 2008, and Brann will hope that he can perform for them against the English giants, Everton, in the UEFA Club competition in mid-February. Demba will also join his new club for their upcoming pre-season camp at Spanish resort La Manga the coming two weeks, where Brann will face Swedes Helsingborg and Danes FC K¯benhavn as a warm-up to the new Norwegian league season.

"I'm happy to have signed the deal with Brann and I'm really looking forward to starting my new career here", Demba said. A native of Bakau, moved to Sweden as a youngster.

He has previously played for Swedish sides Falun BS and BK H‰cken, before moving to Greece. While in Greece, Demba played for PAS Giannina, Aris FC, Kerkyra FC and Panathinaikos. The experienced striker also played for Bulgarian side Levski Sofia. Since 2006, Demba has played for Danish top division side Esbjerg, where he had netted 23 times in 71 league appearances.

Sonko rescues Walsall again

Gambian international, Edrissa Sonko, has again rescued his Division One English club, Walsall,  as they extend their unbeaten run to 19 games in the English Coca Cola League, Observer Sports can reveal.

After netting Walsall’s two goals in their 2 - 2 draw against Swindon Town, Sonko was again the scorer of Walsall’s only brace in their 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, January 19.

The promotion-chasing Walsall deservedly took the lead in the 37th minutes when forward Edrissa Sonko produced a bullet header to convert Lee Holmes' cross.

Bristol Rovers grabbed a late equaliser in the 87th minutes to reward themselves with a share of the spoils.

The former Real de Banjul ace has now scored three goals in two games as he continues to enjoy what he described a confidence boost.

Just after his two goals against Swindon Town a week back, the wizard winger has expressed delight and revealed that his confidence has received a timely boost - thanks to the two goal haul.

Sonko admitted he had been struggling lately, but claim his inspirational form of late was good for his confidence.

“In the last few games I had not been that much confidence but I tried to work things out and I think all will be alright, he commented.

“I hope to push on from here. I want to prove that Walsall were right to sign me”.

Improved form pleases Sonko

Gambian international, Edrissa Sonko, has expressed delight at bagging a brace for his English First Division club, Walsall, and revealed to Observer Sports that his confidence has received a timely boost - thanks to the two goal haul.

The wizard winger admitted he had been struggling lately, but claim his inspirational form in Saturday’s draw against Swindon Town was good for his confidence.

“It was definitely a boost for me because I had been struggling a little lately. I score twice and it is good for my confidence,” commented the former Real de Banjul forward.

“In the last few games I had not been that much confidence but I tried to work things out and I think all will be alright, he said.

“I hope to push on from here. I want to prove that Walsall were right to sign me”.

Sonko’s inspirational performance in the weekend was much to the delight of the his manager, Richard Money, who hailed the player for his heroic efforts in regaining his top form.

“Sonko’s performance was magnificent. He is starting to find his form again. And I want to see him get into position where he can score and assist”, Money was quoted said.

Sonko’s two goals extended promotion-chasing Walsall's unbeaten run to 18 games in the English Coca Cola Division One table. The English club currently lie at sixth position on  41 points in the 24-team league table which is has Swansea City as leaders on 47 points.
