The newly appointed chief of sami district Alhagie Kassum Leigh was recently sworn-in at Sami pachonki village in the Central River Region north.  

The swearing in and flag raising ceremonies were administered by the Governor of the region, Alhagie Ganyie Touray, and attended by thousands of people from the district and other defectors to the ruling APRC party.

Addressing the gathering, Edward Seckan, the governor for North Bank Region, welcome the defectors to the APRC party.  He urged them to strengthen their unflinching support to President Yahya Jammeh and the APRC party, noting that the Gambian leader is dynamic with good intentions for The Gambia.  

He also advised the new chief to live up to expectation and called on the people to give him maximum support for the smooth running of the district.

For his part, Honourable Sainey Mbye, National Assembly Member for Upper Saloum and Central River Region Desk Officer, thanked the defectors for the good decision of joining the APRC party. He stated that President Jammeh is the only leader who can bring development in the area.  He seized the opportunity to call on the people of Sami and the entire Central River Region to respond positively to President Yahya Jammeh’s “back to the land”call.

Kebba Fanta Comma, who was the acting chief of the district,  described Chief Alhagie Kassoum Leigh as hard working and dedicated,he therefore called on the people of Sami to rally behind him.

Other speakers included Alhagie Omar Khan, Governor of Upper River Region, Alhagie Karamo Ceesay, chief of upper saloum, Alhagie Omar Mambureh and Ndey Jeng, Lady councillor.

Real de Banjul axe falls on coach musa Njie

The head coach of Real de Banjul, Musa Njie, has been sacked, Observer Sports can reveal. Coach Njie, who guided the Banjul club to the 2007 league title, was shown the exit door on Tuesday, July 1, after what the club management described as a poor run of form.

His immediate assistant, Papa Sarr Corr, has been appointed as caretaker coach.

Ibrahima Koromah, team manager of the division one giants confirmed the removal of Musa Njie to Observer Sports yesterday.

“Twelve draws and three defeats in twenty matches is enough for a coach to go. We are least satisfy with the performance of the team under his guidance and we thought it was a right move to let him go,” Koromah told Observer Sports.

Confirmed official reports have spoken of the removal last Friday of Mass Axi Gye, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, from his cabinet post by President Jammeh. Mr Sheriff Gomez was appointed as replacement in the same breath, effective Friday 27 June 2008.

Mr Sheriff Gomez has served in a variety of senior positions over the years and is said to have acquired excellent leadership and communication skills.

Prior to his appointment, Mr Gomez, 48, was the National Youth Service Scheme Acting Assistant Director and Coordinator of National Enterprise Development Initiative (NEDI). He was also the Project Coordinator of Gamjobs, a Gambia government and UNDP project, focusing on youth and women.

Secy Gomez earlier served in the army as a career military officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He has also worked in the Communications and Construction units of Gambia Civil Aviation Authority as a Tally Clerk.

Speaking to The Point shortly after the news of his appointment, Secy. Gomez said what is missing at the Department is direction and leadership, adding “and our priority would be to find out and to make a strategic plan for the Department of State for Youth and Sports that would provide the direction and leadership in order to put the Department in a better shape.”

Secy. Gomez pointed out that it is part of his plans to come up with a blueprint for the department in which everybody in the area of youth and sports can work with.

He called on all stakeholders to closely work with the department in order to achieve the desired results.

Secy. Gomez holds a MSc. degree in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management (Business and Service Sector Management) from the London Metropolitan University; BA degree in English, History and Economics from Military Academy, Pakistan, among other achievements.

Bai Mass Taal bags new appointment

Bai Mass Taal, a fomer secretary of state for Fisheries and Water Resources, has been appointed as the executive secretary of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW), according to the magazine Addis Ababa Highlights, a joint publication of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and African Union (AU).

Established in April 2002 in Abuja by ministers responsible for water in 41 African countries, the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) has been mandated to promote cooperation, security, socio-economic development and poverty eradication, through the management of water resources and provision of water supply services.

AMCOW is actively engaged in keeping the state of Africa's water under review, and promoting desirable actions of common interest to Africa by all stakeholders. It also facilitates regional and international co-operation, through the coordination of policies and actions amongst African countries, regarding issues surrounding water resources.

Two new chiefs inaugurated

The newly appointed chiefs, Bakary Dampha of Jarra Central District and Kashim Leigh of Sami Pachonki District, have been inaugurated in separate ceremonies in Lower River and Central River Regions respectively.

Chief Leigh, who replaced Morro Jawla, was inaugurated on Saturday, while Chief Dampha, who replaced Haruna Sabally, was inaugurated on Sunday at Jarra Japineh.

Confirming this in an interview with the Daily Observer, the paramount chief, Alhaji Demba Sanyang, said both ceremonies were held in line with the traditional proceedings of chieftaincy inauguration.

He described the events as successful and affirmed the respect his office and the Council of Seyfolu have for the traditional norms and values.

He highlighted some of the activities that his office, in collaboration with the Council of Seyfolu, are undertaking in response to President Jammeh’s back to the land call for food self-sufficiency.

He told the Daily Observer that all the districts have started preparing their farmlands for cultivation. According to him, they are determined to contribute effectively towards the attainment of food self-sufficiency.

Kombo North appoints female councillor

Kumba Barry Bah the head of the Yai compins in Sinchu Baliya has been appointed Kombo North women councillor . She replaced Mariatou Suwareh whose term of office ends this year.

The selection brought together two women representatives from 32 villages in Kombo North District who met at the office of the Paramount Chief in Lamin village.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, shortly after her selection,  Kumba Barry Bah thanked the people of Kombo North District for the confidence and trust they bestowed on her. She assured the people of Kombo North that she will measure up to expectation.

Kumba Barry Bah who is a strong APRC supporter also called on her party militants to rally behind the party leader, President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.

She also thanked Paramount Chief Demba Sanyany for all his endeavours in uniting the people of Kombo North.

Governor FM Badjie fired

Abdou FM Badjie,  the governor of Western Region, is reported to have been fired last week Thursday, unimpeachable sources told the Daily Observer.

The reason for Mr Badjie’s sacking remains unknown. Furthermore, sources disclosed that his sacking was rumoured several weeks before the great axe fell on him on Thursday.

Our sources further revealed that Mrs Sainabou Faal, the assistant governor of Western Region, has been appointed as the acting governor of the country’s largest region, with eight districts.

Efforts to contact Mr Badjie proved futile, as he was unreachable on his cellphone. But his immediate successor, acting Governor Faal, confirmed the changes at the top echelon of the regional administration. Mrs Faal was appointed assistant governor of that region in 2004.

Police get new CMC

Reliable sources has informed the Daily Observer that Chief Superintendent Yankuba Sonko, officer commanding at the Prosecution Unit of the Gambia Police Force (GPF), has been appointed as the new Crime Management Coordinator (CMC) of the GPF, with immediate effect.

Chief Superintendent Sonko’s appointment came following the elevation of Commissioner Ensa Badjie, a former CMC, to the position of Inspector General of Police.

The Daily Observer made several attempts to sound the comments of CMC Sonko, but the efforts proved futile.

However, the police spokesperson, ASP Sulayman Secka, confirmed the story.

CMC Ensa Badjie takes over

Reliable sources informed the Daily Observer that Benedict Jammeh, the Inspector General of the Gambia Police Force, was yesterday, redeployed to the Department of State for Justice.

Sources further revealed that Ensa Badjie, the Crime Management Coordinator of the Gambia Police Force, has been appointed as the new Inspector General of the Gambia  Police Force with immediate effect.

However, sources could not elaborate on the reasons behind the change in the top echelon of country’s police institution.
