During the forthcoming 4th edition of Akwaaba Travel Market, the only international expo in West Africa, the best in the travel and tourism industry will be recognized at the Travel awards dinner on 25 October 2008.

To make it a colorful and memorable, ATQ magazine has organized different traveler awards for the traveling family industries. The awards are categorized as per market and tourism industries are concerned.

There are numerous hotels, airlines, and state governors nominated for the awards christened Balafon Awards. Among them are Arik, Aero, and Virgin Nigeria, vying for the Best Airline in Nigeria and in West Africa awards. For network and connections, KQ and Ethiopian Airways will vie for the Best in Africa award.

In Nigeria, Qatar and British Airways are nominated for Airline of the Year based on growth in the past one year. Also British Airways and Emirates have been shortlisted for the Best Airline in Africa, while Air France/KLM is in line for two awards – Best Airline to Europe and America - in contention with British Airways and Delta Airlines.

The winners of the awards will be selected purely by verifiable empirical data, unlike in the past where the public voted online for their preferences.

On hotel awards, Transcorp Hilton and Le Meridien President of Dakar, and Le Meridien Ibom will square up against the Sheraton Hotel Gambia according.

In this Balafon awards Tanzania has been chosen as the African Destination of the Year, while Planet One Hotel and All Seasons Hotel have been chosen for Growth Awards. The Innovation Award of the year goes to NTDC for the launch of Satellite Navigation in Nigeria for travelers.

Gambia Tourism Authority takes the Tourism Marketing Award in West Africa while Ghana takes Destination of the Year in West Africa and Delta State has the Tourism Marketing Award for Nigeria.

Africa Travel Association has been chosen as the best promoters of African Tourism. The theme for this year’s awards is GROWTH and ‘the growth leaders in all sectors are being recognized’.

Akwaaba Travel Market, now in its 4th year, is the only international travel expo in West Africa. It was endorsed last year by the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) as the official travel expo in Nigeria, and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) early this year listed it on its website as the main tourism event in West Africa.

The most popular events are the world famous WTM London, ITB Berlin and INDABA, South Africa. Akwaaba is the 5th international event in West Africa to receive global recognition, the others being DAK’ARTS in Senegal for visual arts, FESPACO in Burkina Faso for movies, ROOTS in Gambia for Diaspora festival, PANAFEST in Ghana for culture and AKWAABA in Nigeria for Travel and tourism.

According to the organizer, Mrs Rita Ikechi-Uko, “Our 10-year experience garnered from organizing Travelers Awards has come in handy in packaging this event as these organizations are seeing the effort that has gone into giving our sub-region an event worthy of note. We are most grateful to the groups that have come forth to support us in the promotion of travel and tourism in West Africa.”

During this awards, Africa Travel Market will hold on the 25 October, and there will be a Hospitality Forum too, while exhibitors will be treated to a boat cruise.

Friday, September 19, 2008

The authorities at The Gambia Press Union are at an advanced stage in preparations for the hosting of the first edition of the West African Journalist Association (WAJA) Excellence awards.

As indicated in a press release sent in from the executive of the Union, the Kairaba Beach Hotel will be the venue for the awards, which will be presented to the three best print, radio and TV journalists from the sub-region. More Than Just Awards

Monday, August 25, 2008

Mrs. Mama Saidy Drammeh of Jahally Madina in the Central River Region has recently received a brand new Suzuki motorbike for emerging as the best farmer in Central River Rice Growers Cooperative Society in Madina Umfaly.

Jainaba Sillah of Jahally Madina came second and was awarded nine bags of fertilizer, while the third best farmer award went to Jainaba Sillah of the same village who received seven bags of fertilizer. Other prizes went to seven other farmers from Darsilami, Wellingara, and Boiram.

This is no doubt a way of recognising the hard work embarked upon by these individuals and encouraging others to re-double their efforts in the endeavour for food self-sufficiency.

Also at the society’s annual general meeting recently in Brikamaba, the Action Aid Country Director Dr. Kuje Manneh Jallow presented a Mercedes Benz truck to the society. All these actions, we welcome and we would want to encourage the relevant authorities introduce many of such societies and give them the necessary support.

Anyone working towards the dream of food self-sufficiency in this country should be provided with the needed necessary support.

Taiwan Technical Mission has been supporting in many areas, but the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) and the National Agricultural Development Agency (NADA) should make sure that seeds and fertiliser are available to the farmers, all round the year, at affordable prices, even if it need to be subsidised. They must also be given on time and also adequately build the capacities of our farmers.

We also urge them to train more extension workers, if possible at village level to support and help co-ordinate the works and initiatives of the farmers.

We believe that if there are more of such societies across the country, with right vital support, the country would surely be, in the very near future, attaining food self-sufficiency.

A turning point in gov’t-media relations

Monday, August 04, 2008
Last week’s announcement of the conferment of various national awards on distinguished individuals had a strikingly significant element about it. It is by no means different from previous ones though, given that only deserving candidates have been entitled to it.

However, the inclusion of four journalists among this year’s recipients gave it an all the more important connotation; it marks a turning point in the line of perception of a critical segment of society.

There is absolutely no doubt that the relationship between this government and the ‘genuine press’ has ever been cordial, contrary to what is portrayed by a negligible segment of people. The fact that four journalists were included among this year’s national awardees illustrates this assertion. The journalists in question have been known more for their contributions in the media than anything else; therefore, their award is obviously an endorsement of their role in nation building. This makes it a gross misinterpretation for anybody to see this government as anti-press.

The APRC government, under the leadership of President Jammeh, has repeatedly argued that it has no grudge against the Fourth Estate. All the president has ever called for, and continues to call for, is a concerted effort to build the nation; be you a journalist, a painter, or a taxi driver, your input is as important as the minister responsible for finance, or the permanent secretary at the department of state for health. Your attitude towards the execution of your duty determines the impact of your role.

It is a well-known fact that the press has the potential of making or unmaking progress. The influence of bad press has made certain societies unfit for human habitation; all in the interest of just a few people who, in most cases, are at the services of foreign entities.

It is the duty of every responsible government therefore, not only to ensure a responsible press, but to also make it productive rather than destructive. The idea is to impart patriotism and selflessness in the minds of the citizens.

This latest gesture by the government has the potential to serve as a watershed for normalcy between the extreme wing of the press, and government, as it is an opportunity any organized, genuine media fraternity would jump up for, although members of the Gambian press have not seen any such sign yet.
