Ebou Sillah out for two months with injury

Monday, October 27, 2008
Gambia and Holland’s MVV Maastrich winger, Ebou Sillah, will be out of action for up to two months with a severe knee injure, the Dutch second division club said over the weekend.

The Scorpions captain, who netted seven goals in 32 appearance for the MVV Maastrich this season, visited a local hospital last week to determine the extend of his injury and the 28-year-old diminutive forward was, after the scan, told he must rest for at least months.

MVV recently handed Ebou Sillah a two year contract making permanent his move from Belgian first division side FC Brussels.

The deal was as reward for Ebou Sillah’s brilliant display while he was on loan last season.

A wonderful job

Friday, October 17, 2008

Editor,

I am a Nigerian by nationality, but I always have lots of concern over Gambian football because I have lived in The Gambia for so many years. I want to use this opportunity to thank the Gambian Scorpions for their brilliant performance in last weekend’s match with Senegal.

Gambians should bear in mind that since The Gambia took the Under 17 African cup in 2005, Gambian football has been growing and growing and I am so glad to see Little Gambia, in terms of population, coming up with a 1-1 draw with a well known country like Senegal.

My regards to the Gambian people, the football authority, especially to His Excellency Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh, for their wonderful Job. Thanks.

Gambia Out Of World and African Cup Qualifiers

Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Despite a brilliant performance against Senegal last Saturday in Dakar, The Gambia’s hope of reaching the next stage of the World Cup/Nations Cup qualifiers was dashed when they drew 1-1.

Ordinarily, the draw should have been enough for The Gambia to qualify for the second round of both tournaments, but the new CAF rules aborted The Gambia’s dream.

The game kicked off at 4pm at the Leopold Sedat Senghore Stadium. Barely two minutes into the game, Gambian striker Ngogu Demba got a chance after a poor clearance from the Senegalese goalkeeper Tony Sylva. But it went over the bar.

The Gambia could have scored in the 21stminute when the Gambian captain Ebou Sillah got his first chance but was denied by the Tony Sylva.

The home team got their first chance from their veteran player Khalilou Fadeiga.

The Gambia took control of the game and got numerous chances but could not find the back of the net.

The first half ended in goal less, but The Gambia was dominant.

Back from the interval, the Gambian strikers put more pressure on the Senegalese defence, which gave the Gambia another chance to take the lead. Again Njogu Demba came close to putting the visiting team in the lead but the shot went over the bar.

Senegal made a double substitute removing Salifou Diao and Khalilou Fadiga and bringing in Ousman Ndoye and Remis Gomez, which gave the home side some reinforcement in the midfield that had been dominated by the Gambian youngsters Tijan Jaiteh and Mustapha Jarju. The substitutes brought back the home team in the game, putting pressure on the visiting team. The incessant pressure made the Gambian defence to make a mistake and Kader Manga’s shot was deflected from the Gambian defender Abdou Jammeh to give the home team the lead in the 65thminute.

The Gambian coach Paul Put made changes in the 73rdminute, removing Ebou Sillah and bringing Ken Mansally.

From that moment, the Gambians dominated the game and Njogu Demba could have equalized in the 80thminute from Aziz Corr Nyang’s pass but again was denied by Tony Sylva.

Njogu Demba was removed and Omar Kruma was brought in. This change gave The Gambia more advantage to control the game until the 85thminute when Aziz Corry Nyiang grabbed the equalizing goal for The Gambia.

On the ferries Waste bins onboard the ferries

Tuesday, July 15, 2008
The GPA has now sanctioned the display of waste bins on the ferries which is a brilliant idea, please keep it up.

However, some of these bins are without lids and I cannot fathom that bit of it as what can an invoice of D5000 for all bins requirements do to an organization such as the GPA. The money is not a problem so I see no justification tom supply the ferries with bins that are devoid of lids.

Aside that, the cleanliness on the ferries has improved tremendously but there is still a big room for improvement as we still see and encounter rubbish, waste and dirt that could be avoided but nay it is still there. The other day on my weekly trek to Chamen Kerr Bai Dam the ferry we boarded was very dirty and need some deep sweep but the cleaners did not do a good job the night before. The GPA needs to come into grips with their cleaners. Remember, the ports and the ferries may be the first port of call a many a visitor to our shore and a clean efficient ferry will give a very good impression of our country.

Health and safety on Barra ferry

There is a serious and alive health and safety risk inherent on the Barra Ferry. There is a big unbridged gap on the ferry between the stirs and the generator room on the ferry.

People could be mistakenly pushed off board by a stampede or unnoticing normal pull and push within the ferry for embarking or disembarking. The GPA must act fast and now to prevent someone being accidentally tip or push off board. The metal workers and welder men should come on board and fix it on both sides of the ferry before someone losses their life. This opening on the ferry deck could even be more serious when darkness fell and people get preoccupied with life issues not taking into consideration a dodgy ferry rim that could cost you your life.

Prayers for the Scorpions

Friday, June 20, 2008

Editor,

Kindly allow me space to express my delight and gratitude to the Scorpions of The Gambia. These boys have made us proud. I was watching that Gambia-Senegal encounter from here in Europe, in the midst of many Senegalese brothers. But the total Scorpions domination and the spirit our boys showed, made me the happiest person on the globe that day.

And, in fact, the brilliant Gambia-Algeria encounter which, unfortunately, I couldn’t follow live on TV, demonstrated that we are the best in that part of the world...And now, on the eve of the second leg of the Algeria-Gambia match, I am praying to the Almighty to give us victory, Insallah.

Long live the scorpions, long live the smiling coast....cheers.

Madi must go!

Friday, February 29, 2008
Editor,

Please allow me space to add on to the points raised in your Thursday edition, on the issue of the Gambia Press Union and Media Agenda.

Apart from the conflict of interest that is liable to evolve out of this, the chairman of the union, Madi Ceesay, who is said to be the owner of Media Agenda might be prompted to use it to prolong his stay in office. No wonder the state of silence the GPU is in.

I have got some crazy suggestions for the media fraternity in The Gambia. Could we not revisit the idea of having a term of office for the Executive for a whole three years (this is ludicrous prolongation of term).

It is an open secret that the Gambia Press Union under Madi Ceeasy has lost its glory. His predecessor, Demba A Jawo, has left a legacy of excellent record achievements and good examples of leadership.

He was not only a leader, he was a servant and selfless veteran journalist who deserves to be emulated. But as if the GPU has been cursed, that legacy quickly eroded to the drains long before Madi Ceesay took the mantle of leadership.

The lack of transparency has compelled many concerned Gambians to question his credibility and more importantly his efficiency to stir the affairs of the national union.

His leadership is the saddest thing that has happened to the union, as a good number of Gambian journalists often complain that they are dissatisfied with the way things are being run. No wonder most of these young brilliant journalists in the country and outside no longer take the union seriously.

The upcoming congress is important for the fact it gives journalists the opportunity for change. I and some of my colleagues are considering the possibility to come to The Gambia to attend the union congress. What has been happening is unacceptable and it is high time that young journalists take charge of the affairs of union from those who have failed.

A commission of inquiry should be set up at the end of the congress to investigate the activities and dealings of the union executive for the last three years. This is very important. It is time for Gambian journalists to tell Madi Ceesay enough is enough. If we failed to remove this man from the chairmanship, the union will continue to fail and eventually disintegrate as it is currently happening.

I want to thank the Daily Observer for the editorial piece, which indeed sets the ball rolling. Lets do away with this attitude of shying away from telling each other the truth. Madi must go!
