AFRICA : Can carbon trading spur growth?

Hundreds attending the first all-African carbon forum agreed entrepreneurs in Africa need cash to break into the expanding international carbon emissions trading market. Polluters looking for credits The carbon forum matched investors seeking a higher greenhouse emission allowance than permitted by the Kyoto Protocol with profitable projects that cut greenhouse gases in developing or emerging countries. Each investment translates into ‘certified emission reduction credits’ (CER). The...

MALAWI: Carbon credits could fund development

An initiative to improve the health, wealth and environment ofMalawians is being driven by a proposal to trade in carbon credits. Theconcept is to trade carbon credits earned by curbing the effects ofclimate change through mechanisms established under the 1997 KyotoProtocol, to cover the cost of improving the lives and health ofvulnerable communities in the world's poorest continent, which is alsothe least responsible for producing the greenhouse gases contributingto climate change. "We...

How Are Diamonds Formed?

What do loose diamonds have in common with a pile of coal? More than you might think; in fact in geological terms, loose diamonds are nothing more than glorified lumps of coal. The differences are: - the arrangement of the carbon atoms - how each material is formed Even when it comes to the formation of diamonds, the difference between processes is one of degree rather than mechanics. Here then is some interesting information for potential buyers of wholesale certified diamonds. Carbon is...

Scottish archaeology student discovers 5,000 year old chewing gum in Finland

An archaeology student from Scotland has discovered a 5,000 year old piece of chewing gum on a dig in Finland. Sarah Pickin, a 23-year-old part-time barmaid studying archaeology with Derby University, discovered the gum during a dig in the north-west of the country. The gum is a lump of birch bark tar, and still has visible tooth marks. It has been sent away for analysis, and radio carbon dating is predicted to show the gum to be 5,000 years old. Ms Pickin said of her discovery "I had heard of...

Storing carbon dioxide under the sea – a climate change solution?

European countries meeting here at an international maritime treaty meeting have agreed to allow greenhouse gases to be buried beneath the north-east Atlantic Ocean as a way to cut CO2 emissions, a major contributing factor to global warming. WWF welcomes the amendment made to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, or OSPAR Convention, to enable carbon capture and storage in the sub-seabed geological formations of the north-east Atlantic. “We...
