Cardinal Sarr in The Gambia

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Theodore Adrien Cardinal Sarr, the Archbishop of Dakar ended an historic visit to The Gambia that was not expected. The relationship between Muslims and Christians was seen at play by the warm welcome the Cardinal and his entourage received. The Gambian side had put everything in place to receive the Cardinal. Fr. Bruno Toupan, the principal of St. Peter’s Senior Secondary School at Lamin, who doubles as the chairman of the committee responsible for the all important visitation of the His Eminence spent sleepless nights to make the visit a success. There were speeches made at Shalom during the dinner, there was one at the St. Peter’s School grounds where thousands of Catholics and well wishers gathered to worship. His last public Mass was at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Banjul where the joy over flew. Let us see how all went as the entourage left their host virtually perplexed wishing for an extension of the visit.

His Eminence entered and received a hero’s welcome by both Muslims and Christians. The streets were packed on both sides to see Cardinal Sarr. Different schools stood on road sides and waved heartily to the Cardinal. This came to the climax when a large number of Christians and well-wishers stood at the Shalom Retreat Centre to welcome the visitors into their home for the three days visit. Serrer Christians demonstrated their fishing skills.

A Dinner was hosted by the Bishop for the Cardinal and his entourage, which attracted high delegation from the government headed by the VP Isatou Njie Saidy, Hon Max Axi Gai, Hon. Chrispin Gray Johnson, Rev. Norman Griggs, Rt. Rev. Bishop Telewa Johnson, Imam Baba Leigh, Mr. Luntang Jaiteh Alkalo of Bakau, the Paramount Chief of The Gambia and others. Hon Max Axi Gai also spoke on the occasion.

Cardinal Sarr, the special guest says, “The publicity was enabled every body to be here. My being a Cardinal is not only for Senegal but for Catholics alone but for Senegal and The Gambia. The government is ready to receive visitors as part of their family. Everybody was involved.” He said he visited the Vice President and they spoke for over three hours.  “The Gambia and the Senegal are one as there are intermarriages and the same religions in both countries.

Bishop Bob Ellison CSSp reiterated his joy and said they rejoice with Cardinal Sarr on the respect conferred on him by His Holiness, Pope Benedict X1Vth. “The multitude that followed you yesterday is an example of our unity. We thank you for honouring our invitation.” He said within the one vocation there must be several calls from God. The life of Mary our mother is another; your call to be Cardinal is another. “We pray that what God has done in this visit will vring peace between Muslims and Christians. May God bless the farmers in all they do.”

At Lamin, the Cardinal confirmed 23 candidates and urged them to love themselves. In line with the Gospel, Cardinal Sarr said, “Abraham was old without a child but had great faith. He obeyed God because he loved God. God asked him to leave his country to an unknown land and to leave everything including his friends and family members.” He said Abraham did not get what he wanted but obeyed God and in the long run he got it. He urged everyone to believe, God must provide for him or her. Abraham had no child, he said but God gave his wife Sarah a child in her old age.” The Holy Spirit provides everything, as you receive it today be witnesses to Christ. Gifts were presented to him.

The Cathedral celebration was the climax of all the celebrations. The church was over full with music coming from above. Fr. Edu Gomez got everything under control and it appeared so beautiful with Sisters in Christ miming and dancing a good song. Aunty Ya Sarah Goddard Joof says, “We are happy to be with our Cardinal. He is a symbol of Jesus among us. We are presenting him this vestment as our gift to him.” Other church groups presented gifts to the Cardinal and his entourage. The day ended with merry making and buying of food and sharing.

Dakar Cardinal Bishop to visit Banjul

Friday, May 09, 2008
Robert Patrick Ellison C.S.Sp., the Bishop of Banjul, will officially welcome the Cardinal Archbishop of Dakar to The Gambia on Thursday, May 22, according to  press release from the Office of the Bishop of Banjul.

A cardinal is appointed by the Pope to serve as one of his key advisers. Although they are often called to provide counsel for the Pontiff, the most critical responsibility for the cardinals comes when the Pope dies, and the College of Cardinals chooses his successor.

Earlier in the year, Bishop Ellison invited Cardinal Theodore-Adrien Sarr to The Gambia. “The Gambia and Senegal share the same traditions with many Gambian families having close relatives in Senegal. The customs and culture of both countries complement each other. Cardinal Sarr’s family is a typical example of this kind of interaction.”

“Cardinal Sarr has been a frequent visitor to the country in past years. He visited as a priest and then as Bishop of Kaolack and again as Archbishop of Dakar. This will be his first visit since he was created a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI,” the release indicated.

The Bishop of Banjul used the opportunity to express gratitude to Ismaila Sambou, the secretary of state for Local Government, Lands and Religious Affairs, for the warm reception accorded him and his delegation during their recent meeting.

“His comments to the Bishop were encouraging and further strengthen the already strong relationship between the Government of The Gambia and the Catholic Church in The Gambia. The suggestion of the Honourable secretary of state for the involvement of all sectors of the community in the visit of the Cardinal demonstrates the close relationship between the Muslim and Christian communities of our country.

The visit of Cardinal Sarr will help to deepen our appreciation of our commitment to this special relationship of understanding and respect for each other. The Catholic community is at one with His Excellency, the president of the Republic of The Gambia, in promoting religious tolerance as a key element in the development of our nation,” the release added.

In the release, Bishop Ellison invited all parishes in the Greater Banjul Area to give their full support to the Organising Committee. “Priests and Parish Councils should organise parish groups to line the route displaying their parish or organisations banners.”

The Bishop also called on heads of Catholic schools to organise the pupils in their schools to line the route from Banjul International Airport, Yundum, to Shalom Retreat Centre in Fajara, Bakau.

Khalif of Tijaany Tarikha Passes Away

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

The Khalifa of the Tijaany Tarikha, Cherno Habibou Daha Taal, has passed away peacefully, this paper can reveal.

Grandson of Sheikh Omar Foutiyou Taal and Khalif-General of the family, Cherno Habibou Daha Taal, left this earth for Allah’s Golden Shores on 14 April 2008, in Louga, Senegal.

Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by heart-broken Muslims across the sub-region and beyond, Cherno Habibou was born 90 years ago [1918] in Gouye Mbeut, Louga. He is expected to be laid to rest near the tomb of his elder brother at Zawia Seydou Nourou Tall in Dakar, said a family spokesman Baba Jallow.

The late Cherno Habibou Taal made his last public appearance in a night that Touba considered as the 40th commemoration of the historical 1968 visit of Serign Fallou Mbackeh to his father. The commemoration was graced by the presence of a high-profile delegation from the Mourid Tarikha.

The Khalif, known as paragon of mutual respect and unity among the religions of  God, was a revered Islamic figure for all the Senegalese religious denominations and his participation towards the Church was noted. According to Abbe Jacque Seck, the deceased was always in touch with the authorities of his church and had predicted and even organised prayers for the nomination of Yacinthe Thiandoume as a cardinal.

The grandsons of Sheikh Omar Foutiyou Taal appreciate the teachings and the spiritual heritage of a great Islamic figure having accepted Allah’s will and while awaiting to know the new Khalifa of the Tarikha which spread Islam in West Africa.
