Current Feed ContentLets stick to the rule of the gameWednesday, September 03, 2008 Editor, Allow me space in your widely read newspaper to echo the words of the various teams participating in the ongoing tournament at the Serrekunda East, organised by the Serrekunda East Sports Development Organisation. It is obvious that this annual competition champions the objective of the GFA, which is to develop our beloved sport (football) from the grassroots level. But it’s rather unfortunate that this cause is being jeopardised by a very poor and partial organisation. To be specific, the tournament has been characterised by unacceptable developments detrimental to sport development. This year’s tournament has seen very poor games, less goals and suspension of a lot of players through bookings. The average game time is maximum 70 minutes as 90% of the games played don’t exceed 75 minutes, full-time. The most paramount ethics of refereeing is neutrality, but to the dismay of most football lovers, referees at SEYDO are seen deliberately taking sides, and moreover the organisers fail to realise this, though the success of the game absolutely involves good judgment on the pitch. And the referees are to be professionals too. Therefore, for the betterment of the game and in the interest of our nation at large, Nawettan centers need to double up and keep up to standard as required by the rules of the game. Author: DO Face of Africell – A Dazzling Depth of TalentThursday, August 28, 2008 Ever since the Face of Africell competition initiated by Africell, one of the leading GSM companies in the country, started, Gambians have seen a lot of young talented and intelligent girls most of whom would not have been exposed without the competition. This competition has shed light on the wealth of talented, intelligent and articulate young women that are growing up in our nation. We must ask, seeing these young women in action, what opportunities we are creating for them here in The Gambia and could we be doing more? There has been a notable encouragement and empowerment of women in this country by President Jammeh since he came to power. These girls’ ancestors would not recognise The Gambia as it exists today because of the enormous change that has taken place in terms of women’s rights and entitlement. This notwithstanding, many women in this country still face enormous challenges. Many girls are not educated and are still kept at home doing menial chores while their brothers are sent to school. Africell should be commended for their exposure of these girls and their highlighting of the great wealth of talented intelligent women in The Gambia but is it not disappointing that if not for the GSM company we might never have met these young women? How many more potential contestants are there in the country who will never get a chance to take part because they are not receiving the education to which they are entitled under international law? The prizes on offer to the contestants are a fully paid scholarship to study abroad or a brand new Nissan “Pathfinder” 4X4. It will be very interesting to see which prize the eventual winner will choose. Will she choose to go abroad and further her education and on the way broaden her mind and experience through travel? Or will she choose to take the 4X4 and be content to cruise the streets in a brand new vehicle to the admiration of all who see her? The choice will reveal much about the winners expectations in life. We strongly encourage the eventual winner to choose the scholarship package if they are successful. Even if they have been educated already they should further their studies abroad. Knowledge is never a burden and extra education is always empowering and beneficial. While many might be tempted to choose the vehicle if they are declared the winner they should remember that a vehicle will eventually wear out, especially on Gambian roads, but the intellectual benefits they will reap from furthering their education will stay with them for the rest of their lives. As a well-educated person in the profession of their choice they can get a job that will allow them to purchase any car they wish at a time of their choosing. We wish the contestants well tomorrow and thank Africell for showing us all the wonderful abundance of intelligent, talented young women living in The Gambia today. They will be wonderful future leaders. Don’t forget the final is tomorrow. Author: by Assanatou Bojang Gambia’s Olympic dream ends![]() Monday, August 18, 2008 The Gambia’s hopes of clinching their maiden silverware in Olympic Games have come to an end over the weekend when the last of their three athletes in the on-going Beijing Games failed to go beyond the preliminary round of the athletics competition. Fatou Tiyana followed fellow athlete Suwaibou Sanneh and boxer Badou Jack on the sideline after her 12.25 was way too slow to ease her into the top 40 for the women’s 100 metres second round. The Gambia’s sole female athlete in the Beijing Games finished 58th in her over all position on Saturday. With Badou out of the competition since losing his preliminary bout and Suwaibou and Tiyana following suit, the Gambian delegation, headed by George Gomez, will spend the last few days of the Games as spectators waiting for the closing ceremony. The Gambian has never won an Olympic medal of any colour (gold, silver or bronze) even though the country has been participated in every Olympic Games since 1986. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 The erstwhile International Bank for Commerce (IBC) has been rebranded to its successor Bank PHB, which is an extension of a leading financial institution in Nigeria’s banking industry. The new brand was formally unveiled on Friday at a dinner held at the five-star Sheraton Hotel in Brufut, presided over by the secretary of state for Finance and Economic Affairs, Musa Gibril Bala Gaye, on behalf of President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh. Bank PHB is reputed for its superior value customer services and extensive experience in banking. It is also renowned for its innovative customer-centred services, as they showcase a wide-range of alternative financial products that run to offer its customers with solutions to their unending financial needs. The launch was also attended by the speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay, the governor of the Central Bank of The Gambia, Bamba Saho, high profile officials of the private sector including the officials of Bank PHB, business people, among other dignitaries. “I am aware that Bank PHB is the fastest growing bank in Nigeria, ranked among the first five among Nigeria’s 24 banks. Our expectation is that you bring that tradition of excellence into The Gambia, fostering healthy competition in the banking industry here that will ultimately lead to a significant improvement not only in the banking products and services, but also stimulate overall improvement in the economy,” said SoS Gaye, while delivering a speech on behalf of the president, who was honoured as the special guest of honour. Affirming that the president takes the development in the banking sector very seriously, as it is the pivot on which economic activities are hinged, the Finance and Economic Affairs SoS assured the bank that they would continue to give support and play their role as regulators. Gambia: Gateway “The strategic location of The Gambia has always endeared it to the hearts of investors. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the coast of The Gambia was a major port for the lucrative trade in slaves, which were brought in by Arab traders through Gao and Timbooktu. The Gambian coast was also used for the trade in gold and ivory by both the Portuguese and English traders,” said the SoS, while buttressing the longstanding economic significance of The Gambia, as strategic location. He then continued: “The country was so important to all the empires it fell under that, at a time during the early and late 19th centuries, it was the subject of a constant tussle between the English, French and Portuguese colonialists.” Though relatively small, SoS Gaye described The Gambia as a country where untapped resources are flowing. “I dare say that your choice of The Gambia as the first port of call in your expansion into the West Coast, and indeed the entire Africa is a wise and promising decision,” he noted, while welcoming the bank to The Gambia. The Finance and Economic Affairs SoS was hopeful that the emergence of Bank PHB to the country’s banking landscape, with the injection of more funds, and an abiding promise of better services for the people, indicates “our vision of a Gambia that will ultimately become an investment haven for the best business in the world”. “This is primarily for two major reasons: First, for the people of Gambia, Bank PHB offers a major alternative in innovative financial solution and unparalleled customer experience. Our retail strategy was recently hailed by Renaissance Capital as the most well thought out in the Nigerian banking industry while a leading national paper named Bank PHB the most innovative bank in Nigeria,” he declared. He then continued: “Secondly, for us in Bank PHB, today’s unveiling marks the first expression of our global expansion drive expected to soon see us establishing strategic dominance in West Africa in the short run and eventually make a major inroad in different parts of Eastern and Central Africa.” Track record According to the Bank PHB MD, his bank has become a life experience for the average Nigerian, popular for its innovativity, creativity, resilience and foresight. “Bank PHB’s 2007 financial report card also confirms it emergence as Nigeria’s eight biggest bank with total assets and contingents of N480 billion (US$84 Million) representing increases of 155 per cent in total assets and contingents and 197 per cent in profits. Bank PHB controls about 70 per cent of the Nigerian stock exchange market capitalisation,” Mr Chibundu added. Investment haven Noting that they find The Gambia a strategic business destination, Mr Chibundu said The Gambia’s corruption index is about the lowest in Africa, making it a safe haven for investment, relaxation and business. “Bank PHB is in The Gambia to support the government’s effort in expanding the economic opportunities available to the average Gambian representing all classes of customers. Our retail suit offers financial options that leave no customer stranded outside the financial space,” an optimistic Bank PHB boss stated. Ahmed Koro, the executive director of Bank PHB in Nigeria, who represented his chief executive officer, said they are in The Gambia to reach out to the “unbanked, the under-banked and indeed Africans both at home and in the diaspora, who have yearned for the customer experience which only Bank PHB offers”. Undertakings For her part, Fatou Mas Jobe, the group head of Retail Banking, who delivered the vote of thanks, traced the historical relations between Nigeria and The Gambia, which could be traced as far back as The Gambia’s Independence in 1965, before delving into the economy. Mrs Mas Jobe, a redoubtable Gambian banker, who is famous for her reservoir of innovations, said The Gambia has in recent years witnessed a steady growth in its economy, enhanced by the economic opportunities. “For us as an institution just a few years into our operations, our scorecard speaks so eloquently of our service excellence and commitment to employee welfare. A few months after assuming management responsibility of the erstwhile IBC; we effected a significant upward review of salaries thus making us one of the highest paying banks in The Gambia,” she said, while elaborating on other significant undertakings by the bank. “Through our convictions and actions both in financial management and human development, we have become synonymous with ‘Thinking Possible’ and extraordinary achievements. Bank PHB is the first Nigerian corporate organisation to partner with the US government in the sponsorship of its most prestigious scholarship programme: The Fulbright Scholarship,” she said. Bank PHB’s Mas Jobe was of the hope that in the next few years, Bank PHB would have been fully transformed into a true financial supermarket, providing services not only in banking, but also in asset management, insurance and other related financial services. The young star, was born on December 15, 1983, in Banjul. From an early stage, his family saw his love for music. At the age of 8, LC climbed the podium at the Independent Stadium in Bakau when his uncle, the renowned Gambian reggae artist, Demba Conta was on stage."I am determined to make it worldwide and with love from my family in Sweden, England, France, USA and Gambia as well as the professional producers and artists that I work with," said the young Gambian upcoming hip-hop star. Intrigued by artistes like the Senegalese world famous R&B celebrity Akon and Hakim, coming out to strongly represent their African roots, LC is once again ready to take his music to the next level. His performance on stage was loved by the audience and ever since he has seen the stage as his home. In 1989, his father Mamadi Conta, left The Gambia for Sweden with a promise to take his family there as soon as possible. Years of struggle and hardwork made it possible in 1996 for Mamadi to take his two sons Lamin and Demba Conta to Stockholm, Sweden . While in Sweden, LC´s love for music only grew with strength and within a few years he started writing and producing his own songs. But that was only the start. He sees himself as a true hip-hop artist and those were the right years to blow up as one. According onegambia.com, LC soon had a lot of friends and fans, and started several groups with friends, performing all over Stockholm, winning contest after contest of hip-hip competition. The most recognized group, INT, formed by 8 guys took Stockholm by storm and it looked like they would be the next hit group to come up on the charts. Sadly, all members were not as dedicated so the group separated. With inspiration from artists like 2pac, Nas and Notorious BIG aka Biggi, he kept fighting for his music knowing fully well that he could make it as long as he believed in himself. Lamin Conta still worked a lot with one other member from INT and Madness, and together they came out with some real bangers for the audience. But mostly, LC thought of a solo career which he could mold and shape as he would want it. "I am already known in Stockholm for my hardcore rap, started spreading my music out of the country, travelling a lot to both Paris and London ," he said. In London , as always, people flocked around him, wanting to hear more of his beats and rhymes and with many struggling teens, he hanged in the hood where underground hip hop was a strong influence in many youths’ lives. After several problems with the police, he fled the country as soon as he had the chance and went to Paris, France, where he met up with his friend and talented underground hip hop artist, Fainel. Together they kept the struggle for money alive and at the same time tried to find time for the studio whenever they could. A few months later, he came back to Stockholm, Sweden , with recorded songs in his pocket, rhymes in his head and experience for life. Being young and careless, he kept the money struggle alive by being involved with drugs and criminals. His family opposed his way of living which resulted into him frequently changing his home by going from one friend to the other to find a roof over his head. In 2007, he found peace in his soul and made peace with his family by dropping criminal acts and drug abuse behind him and looking forward to all that life still had to bring for him, and geared up his attempts to spread his music. He knows fully well that it is only a matter of time before the world will know his story. Author: by Sheriff Janko |
