In his welcoming remarks at the launch, Mr. Daniel Mendy, Principal of the school, gave a brief history of the project. According to him, it all started in 2007 when the Information Telecommunication Association of The Gambia (ITAG) provided a preliminary training for the deaf girls of the school. ITAG was impressed with their performance and decided to expand the scheme to a computer lab. He assured the donors that the lab would be properly maintained and thanked all those who contributed to the success of the project. Mr. Papa Njie, president ITAG, who also doubles as the CEO of Unique Solution said “ITAG is the pioneer association for Information Communication Technology representing the voice of the ICT industry and professionals, together with ICT enthusiasts and students,” he said. He reaffirmed his association’s commitment, together with its partners, to develop a vibrant ICT industry in the country. “In achieving these goals and objectives of supporting ICT education is of prime importance to ITAG” He revealed that they have raised a sum of D393, 000.00 from the benevolent private sector to support the project. The computer lab has also been fitted with a functional local area network envisaged to take up to 12 computers. A wireless Internet service called “schoolnet” has also been installed and provided free of charge by Unique Solutions. The new lab he said will play a part in president’s Silicon Valley project in transforming the country into an ICT hub. In officially launching the facility, Mr.Karim Sonko permanent secretary at the Department of State for Information, Communication Technology applauded ITAG for the initiative. He described the launch as timely as it coincides with International Telecommunication day, the theme for which was “connecting people with disabilities-ICT opportunities for all.” Author: By Nfamara Jawneh The potential of your BrainWednesday, April 09, 2008 Editor, If you ever have doubts about your mental potential, doubt no more, because you carry in your head the most powerful computer in the world. With it you can learn virtually anything. Even if you are to learn ten facts every second, for hundred years, you cannot still exhaust its potential. It is believed that even great scientists and writers like Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton and William Shakes peare never used more than five percent of their brains potential. In deed, discoveries made on the brain makes it palpably clear that almost every individual is born a potential genius. One of the confidence-boosting discoveries on the brain is that it has infinite storage capacity. According to Colin Rose, a British Psychologist, the brain contains 1.5 billion cells. Professor Petr Kouzmich Anokhin of Moscow university estimated it at ten billion. One brain cell, according to professor Anokhin, “has a possibility of connections of one with twenty-eight noughts after it”. He estimated the total associative capacity of the brain at “ I followed by 10.5 million kilometres of noughts”. This figure represents the amount of ideas and facts the brain can store. Whyne Dyer, a top us psychiatrist, estimated it at one hundred trillion words. The brain’s storage capacity is definitely inexhaustible. This had prompted professor Anokhin to conclude in 1973 that “ND human yet exists who can use all the potential of his brain. This is why we don’t accept any pessimistic estimates of the limits of the human brain. It is unlimited. Another confidence-boosting discovery on the brain is that it is divided into two parts the left and the right hemispheres. The most eminent researcher in this area is professor Roger Sperry of the California Institute of Technology. He won a Nobel Prize for his research, which revealed that each of the hemispheres is dominant in certain intellectual functions. The left hemisphere is dominant in academic functions such as logic, analysis, lists, words, speech and numbers. The right hemisphere, on the other hand, is dominant in creative functions such as colour, lines, rhythm, images and imagination. Other researchers including Robert Ornstain, 2 aidel and bloch later confirmed sperry’s findings. They went on to say that the functions identified by sperry are not restricted to one part but are distributed all over the brain. The left/right brain theory is very important in understanding your mental potential. First, it means that each individual possesses the range of skills of the two hemispheres. This implies that each individual is capable of learning any subject. Thus the generally held belief that someone who is good in maths cannot be good in literature and vice versa is unrealistic. According to Tony Buzan, a British Psychologist, “saying I am bad at or do not possess mental skill X is both an untruth and a misunderstanding. In fact what has been found out is that mastery of one skill helps one to master other skills. Secondly, the left/right brain theory has implications for our learning. For example, if you want to excel in your learning you should use both parts of your brain. The greatest brains in history are believed to have used both parts of their brains. In their notes, for instance, they did not only use words but they also used images, lines and symbols. In fact Leonardo da Vinci did not testrict himself to one occupation. He was the most accomplished artist, mathematician and scientist of his day in at least half a dozen different fields, and he could write simultaneously with his left and right hands,” according to Colin Rose. The enormous potential of the brain elucidated above compelled Colin Rose to assert that “it is probably correct to say that almost every normal child is born a potential genius.” To realize that genius one now needs a rich intellectual environment. There is a lot of evidence to prove the importance of a rich intellectual environment in boosting academic performance. To cite an example, a German Doctor decided to give his son, Karl Witte, a really rich educational environment. This enabled Karl to enter the university of Leipzig at nine and obtain his PHD at 14. Another example was Edith Stein whose father, Aaron, was determined in 1752 to give his daughter the best educational environment. Edith could talk in simple sentences at one, and had read and entire volume of the Ency Dopaedia Britannica at the age of five. She was reading six books a day by the age of six. At 12 she enrolled in college and was teaching higher maths at Michigan State University at 15. In England, Ruth Lawrence obtained her O’ and A’ Levels by the age of 10 and was accepted at Oxford University at the age of 12. In conclusion the poor accademic performance which is so common in our school is unnatural. It is a mockery of our vast mental potential. We do not need to be like Karl, Edith or Ruth but definitely we need to rise above our present standards. Abdoul Rahman Barrie Author: DO Three Great Tips For Handling PDF Conversions![]() Saturday, March 22, 2008 1. Zamzar launches a pretty nifty file conversion service I wanted to scrape a graphic from a PDF file and I was searching online for my options. Normally one looks for a packaged option, downloadable, and I was sorting through the free and not so free, the working and not so working and I came across this little gem called Zamzar. It’s a service, rather than software, and they do one or two of the niftiest things going. First, they translate my PDF files into just about any file format I could wish for. This was what I wanted in the first place, but they also offered to do little other things that were neat, like send me a file that they can scrape off Youtube! I like that. Let me go aside for a paragraph and then back to Zamzar. I pulled Paul Tobey’s Music Box Dancer, which is a jazzed up version of the classic off and now I can listen to it on my PDA when I don’t have internet access. One of the comments said it best for me: “I like both versions. These guys are just having a great jam session having fun with a tune that lends itself to such things.” Over 22,000 views can’t be wrong! Paul is an interesting guy. I met him at one of his Internet Marketing Courses, and after about three hours, realized that he wasn’t just teaching me how to do Search Engine Optimization, but he was also teaching me about copy writing, etiquette, strategy, how to close sales, and just plain Internet business sense. His Music Box dancer is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmqgNKB1uog and you can look over his internet marketing course at http://www.trainingbusinesspros.com/. But that’s not why I’m writing this. Through Paul, I found a great practical use for Zamzar and this is how it fits usefully into my life. Zamzar is a pretty neat converter. It's free. You go to www.zamzar.com and simply upload your file. Shortly afterwards, Zamzar emails you a link back. You follow that link and download the converted file. It's free, and pretty easy! Zamzar does the following conversions to PFD and back. The entire list, which includes images, audio and video! • convert PDF to doc - Microsoft Word Document • convert csv to PDF Comma Separated Values The thing that I really like about Zamzar is that they are new and coming up with new stuff all the time. It also seems to convert WordPerfect documents into Word documents and Word documents into WordPerfect Documents which can be very handy if you are in a WordPerfect shop. I'll use Zamzar occasionally. However, I'm not sure I want to ship my corporate or personal information to Zamzar or off into some unknown place in the Interweb, but I sure like it for what it does. I'll stick to MyPDFCreator for the business critical and personal stuff, but Zamzar is a great tool in the toolbox! 2. PDF Etiquette: It's the right thing! Just because you have PDF doesn't mean you have to use it! When should one use PDF and when should one stick to POT (Plain old Text) PDF is great when you want to send an uneditable document. Examples include quotations, invoices, legal documents, and ebooks PDF is also outstanding for sending documents for which the presentation layout is crucial, like annual reports. However, anytime that you email an attachment, it requires extra clicks to open it, and people tend not to do extra clicks. They miss the attachment, or they don't want to open attachments for fear of viruses, or, if they are on an old computer, opening up large PDF or other files can slow down and stop a computer. If you are sending a birthday party initiation or something casual, put it in the email. Don't use any attachment at all. 3. In Software, "Feature Rich" can be a "Bloated Pig"! Make sure that the software you are using isn't loaded down with options you'll never use. If you buy, for example, Adobe Professional for $449.00 you are getting the most complete feature rich, product available. This is great when you want to "Design forms to collect and aggregate data through e-mail or on the web" for example. But if 100% you are going to do falls in the realm of "create a Word Document or a PowerPoint show and convert it to PDF and back" then you don't need to spend most of the $449.00 and you don't need to have to struggle through the myriad of options that the "Feature Rich" software offers you, and you don't need to go on a three day training course. Buy the bacon, not the whole hog! About The Author Author: by: Phil Cheevers Source: Articlecity.com Are They Watching You Online?![]() Monday, March 17, 2008 When surfing the Internet you probably take your anonymity for granted, most of us do. Tapping phones, listening to confidential conversations, reading others' e-mail messages seems like something that only happens in spy movies to "other" people. However, you probably don't realize just how much information about yourself has the potential to get transmitted across the Internet every time you go online. Every computer connected to the Internet has "ports" that allow it to connect. A "port" doesn't mean you have a physical hole or opening in your computer's case or hardware, but it does mean you have openings through which information passes back and forth between your computer and the Internet. Depending on the type of connection (dial up, LAN, cable, DSL), you may have several openings for potential mischief by hackers, malicious code or viruses. Computers with dedicated connections rate the most at risk. If someone or something gets into one of these ports and into your computer, they can potentially watch everything you do and see all the data you enter, including social security numbers and credit card information. The easiest way to defeat this problem involves using a firewall. Firewalls, simple and inexpensive software available at virtually any office supply or computer store, block the most common ports hackers use to enter your computer. Firewalls also help you detect and block unauthorized transmission of information from your computer to the Internet. This adds a significant measure of protection if you get infected with a Trojan horse virus that tries to "phone home" to the hacker with your sensitive information. If you'd like to test your connection for vulnerability to attack, log on to http://security1.norton.com and run the various diagnostics. I would strongly advise anyone connected to the Internet through DSL or cable to get and use a firewall to protect against unauthorized access. Infected with "Spyware?" Previously we talked about unauthorized access to your computer. But a growing problem online with people watching you and your activities involves using programs you willingly place on your computer. Commonly called "Spyware," this refers to any program that transmits information about you to someone else without you knowing exactly what gets sent. The main purpose of Spyware involves tracking your surfing habits so advertisers know which targeted ads to send you. Most Spyware basically comes onto your computer bundled with other software applications, as a standalone program, or as modification to the HTML on a web page. Regardless of how you get it, you need to understand exactly what information gets transmitted about you so you can decide whether to keep or uninstall the software. Plain and simple, these Spyware programs can potentially reveal extremely sensitive information about you and your online habits. It is this feature of computers that distinguishes them from calculators and makes them highly versatile. A computer program can include instructions that may vary from a few scores to a billion or even more. It may take years for a team of computer programmers to develop a program for an internet browser. The program may still contain some errors called bugs. Some of the earliest models of computers were as large as a room. Modern computers use integrated circuits (ICs) to perform their complex functions. These circuits have helped in developing compact and light weight variants of computers. Some modern day simple computers are small enough to be fitted into a wrist watch. Source: amazines.com All About Computer Recycling![]() Saturday, December 29, 2007 Recycling is the buzz word of the 21st Century, with everyone eager to prove their green credentials and help cut carbon emissions. And when it comes to disposing of old or redundant computers it is no different; whether you run a business or you have equipment at home it's all about computer recycling! But, it's much more than ensuring that you look to be doing the right thing; refurbishing and recycling computers forms a very important part of a sustainable waste strategy. It is also an effective way of ensuring that computers are re-used in a socially responsible manner within the UK or used to aid Third World development as they can also be exported to countries in need. Following the introduction of the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) EEC Directive which became effective in the UK on 2 January 2007, the disposal of computers is now strictly regulated. Disposing of old computers also makes good business sense. Most computer recycling firms will pick up your old equipment for free, if you are replacing it or it was sold to you after 13 August 2005 and/or you are replacing it with new equivalent equipment. You will have to pay for disposal if the equipment you are disposing of is not to be replaced. There are also other occasions when you must pay for disposal, if in doubt you should contact a reputable computer disposal company who will be able to advise you of your legal obligations. As well as giving sound advice the computer disposal company can arrange to remove your equipment. They will also ensure that all information held on the computer memory is permanently wiped from the hard disks and will provide an audit report showing exactly what has happened to your equipment; how it has been processed and where it has gone. So, whether it has been recycled and sent out to other locations or totally destroyed it will be listed on your audit report. If you do not want to use a commercial company for your computer disposal organisations such as Oxfam will collect unwanted but working computers from businesses in Great Britain. They refurbish the machines and sell them on using the profits to support their charity work. However, you must make sure that you delete all your sensitive information before releasing the machines, and you won't get a full audit report, but you will have done your bit for the third world! Although the WEEE regulations became law on 1 January 2007, the phasing of the legislation means that recycling of household goods will not be covered until 1 July 2007. But, businesses are now liable so you must be aware of the regulations as they affect your business and your liability when it comes to the disposal of your computer and electrical equipment. It is up to you to ensure that your business recycles computers in an environmentally friendly way, whether through a commercial organisation or through a charitable donation. Either way you will be helping do your bit to make this world a greener and better place.

Author: By: Ajeet Khurana Source: Article Source: http://www.myarticlemall.com What can you do to Speed up the Internet?![]() Monday, November 12, 2007 The Internet’s never going to be fast enough, but follow our tips and it’ll be faster than what is was. Anyone who has ever used their own home computer to demonstrate the Internet to a friend who’s never seen it before knows there’s one question that occurs more than any other: Why is it so slow? As the kind person showing your friend the delights of the online experience, it’s hard not to feel a little offended. How dare they criticize your setup and the majesty of the Internet? But, of course, there’s a lot of truth in the question. The Internet is slow. Actually, it’s good to be reminded of this, because the chances are there’s a lot that can be done to speed it up. There are three main areas to consider. Hardware, software, and the phone line. Hardware Lets begin with your computer. Modern web browsers require lots of system resources. Any recent computer fits the bill, but what if you have to make do with something older? Adding more ram is good, especially if you have less than 256mb. Consider adding a faster hard disk. It won’t speed up downloads from the Internet, but avoids windows slowing things down by swapping files from RAM to disk, and your browser should be able to work more quickly. Don’t forget your modem. If you’re still using a 56k modem, then perhaps it’s time to upgrade to ISDN or ADSL. It needn’t cost the earth either. Broadband Internet is becoming so popular that many home users have already upgraded to this option. Most ISP’s will throw in a free router as part of the package. If you don’t have a network card in your computer to support the router, then perhaps it is time to upgrade that old PC. You may be thinking that it’s OK because you’ve had a 56k modem for years. But the money you’re wasting on dial-up and slow downloads could be considerably higher than if you resorted to broadband internet. Check with your local ISP about broadband packages on special. If you are going to purchase your own router, make sure your operating system and computer will support the new router. Your local computer store will most probably offer you free advice on the best way to setup your router. Software If you are going to stick with 56k modems, hardly anyone is happy with their speed, a dissatisfaction which has bred a brand new genre – utilities designed to speed things up. One major subcategory is the accelerator, a program which speeds up your browser in two different ways. First, they replace the browser’s cache with their own faster, smarter version. Second, they help make the most of your available bandwidth. Normally, when you’ve downloaded a web page, your modem is idle while you read it. Accelerator programs take advantage of this, working through the links on the page, and downloading them while you read. This is known as pre-fetching. When you click on a link, if it’s already been fetched, then you see it speedily displayed from your own hard disk instead of having to wait for it to come from the Internet. This sounds ideal, but there are a few problems. Accelerators can be intrusive, and it’s possible for all this background activity to slow you down. It’s also hit-and-miss whether the next link you click will be to one of the pages pre-fetched by the accelerator. If it’s not, you won’t see any benefit at all. Also, Internet purists argue that accelerators can slow down the Internet for everyone because they increase Internet traffic by fetching pages that might never be viewed. Despite big claims for them of speed increases of 10 times or more, most people are unlikely to see more than 50% improvement at best and tasks such as downloading files will be no faster at all. Another software category tries to optimize Windows Dial-Up Networking. This is normally done through the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). The theory behind this is complex, but basically all Internet data sent to and from your computer travels in little chunks called packets. MTU defines the maximum size of each packet and the default MTU setting isn’t suitable for modem connections – by changing it, so the theory goes, you can get a big speed increase. Is it true? Some people report improved performance, others report no change at all. It’s important to use the right tools for the job. If you’re downloading, use a download manager to speed things up. A good download manager checks for mirror sites to see which is faster, and even switches between sites during the download to get the best performance. You can even schedule downloads for off peak hours. Phone Line A major bottleneck in your Internet connection is your telephone line. Standard phone technology just isn’t good enough for speedy downloads. Therefore, you should seriously consider the other possibilities, ISDN and ADSL. Logging on is very quick compared to the tedious wait during dial-up. Rental could be high, but check with a few ISP’s and you may find it’s much cheaper than you imagined. If you need improved speed, the costs may be worth it. Plus, you will have a 24 hours always-on connection. The faster your modem goes, the more pleasant your Internet experience will be.
