Top Gambian artistes warms up weekend jam

Several top rated Gambian artistes are currently warming up for a mega concerts on November 15th, 2008, at the Romana Hotel in Bakau.

The entertainment night, exclusively organised by Amies Promotions in collaboration with Fire House Crew, is expected to be another thrilling showcase.

According to Amie Manka, the organisers of the event, the artistes in the night includes, Marthin Luther King aka Mr "Do Deh Ham’, Marion George, Magnificent Joe, Firdaws, among other big time artistes.

"It will also witness one of the Gambia’s hottest Disk Jokey, Fireman of FireHouse Crew in the building. The house will be on fire, as the, the night will enable the King "A" Fire to give conscious vibes to the youth folk," she said.

She added that, some of the new generation tunes like -basement, reggae dancehall, R&B will the order of the day among others will hit tunes from the Senegambia melodies.

"The famous DJ Fireman will there to give full satisfaction to the fans. So fans get ready and fasten you dancing shoes, as the house will ablaze on the night," she added.

Remember it will be night of total togetherness as the Fire House Crew is coming to conquer. It gonna be big, it gonna first of its kind. Don’t be left out in this history making action process!!

It is a well-known fact. Gambians, especially the womenfolk, love Youssour Ndour. They just can’t seem to get enough of him. The more they get from him, the more they love him. And for good reasons too.

The Senegalese Mbalax superstar is one of the most respected musicians. His decades-long stay in the international music scene is a testament to the consistency of the quality of his output.

Yours truly cannot remember a time when Youssour (who started singing before You-Know-Who was born) was not out there singing some hit. The Jamaican singer, Capleton, recently released a song – ‘Hits on toppa hits’ – listing his numerous hits over the years. Youssour could do the same and his list would most probably be lengthier!

And that is part of the reason why Gambians, and indeed the rest of the world, love him. With him, quality is assured. So you just never get enough. Which is why Gambians are gearing up for yet another whirlwind of Youssour Ndour concerts.

Awa Camara, president of the Bakoteh segment of the Youssour Ndour Fans Club, bubbles with enthusiasm when talking about the Senegalese star. She shares this particular trait with a many other Gambians. Many have now decided to band together and form associations like hers.

Edrissa Jagne is another Gambian who shares her enthusiasm for the Mbalax sensation. He is also the PRO of her association. The duo walked into the offices of the Daily Observer, met Yours Truly, and then did their best to turn him into another Youssour Ndour disciple. They both called on the general public to come out in full force for the forthcoming concerts as the world-renowned star has a lot in store for them.

The man who is considered the Godfather of Mbalax will arrive in Banjul today, Friday, 31st October 2008. His plane is expected to kiss the tarmac at 11:30 a.m.

According to reports, the Senegalese star will be whisked off to the exclusive and extremely classic Milly’s V.I.P club – located opposite Tafbel in the Senegambia area, Kololi - for a brief press conference at 12:00.

He is also expected to perform tonight at the Senegambia Hotel. A dance and a show will be held on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Both events will take place at the Independence Stadium.

So get ready. You have been warned by the Early Warning Centre. The Mbalax tsunami is on the way. It will hit and hit hard. But don’t worry. After all "the good thing about music is that when it hits you, you feel no pain." Only pleasure.

So let your dancing shoes be your lifebuoys. And if at the centre of the storm you should see Yours Truly boogying and woogying, just nya kasal la, as my Mandinka relatives say.

Olugander waxing stronger in Europe

The Gambia’s International reggae dancehall artist, Olugander of the Promised Land Crew, has said that his ongoing tour of Europe has been characterised by thrilling stage concerts.

"My shows and concerts were all well attended by Gambians here in the Diaspora as well as other nationalities. It has been a great success," he said. Olugander left the Gambia some time back on a three-month tour of Europe. He held his first mega concerts in Germany, before proceeding to Estonia.

He has held a series of TV interviews with some renowned DJs in Germany as well as in other places. The young star is expected to travel back to Estonia next week for yet another series of concerts. He will round up his trip in Spain.

Reports gathered by What’s On indicate that the Senegalese female-Mbalax star, Titi and band are currently warming up for their upcoming three-day mega concerts in The Gambia.

Koriteh Extra party will also enable the Senegalese mega star to thrill her Gambian fans to the fullest.

Organised by DJ Lamin Cham of Champions Sound Movement in collaboration with Sunu Musik, the three-day fun-filled event is scheduled to take place on the17th, 18th and 19th of October. The indentified venues are Brikama in Western Region, Jama Hall in Senegambia and Jokor West Field respectively.

The President Award winner, DJ Cham, said these upcoming mega concerts are due to popular demand.

“This is the moment the fans in The Gambia have been waiting for. Titi loves the people of the country. So come in your numbers to grace this occasion. This will be purely a night of total togetherness. This show will be one of the hottest shows in the history of Gambian show-biz,” he said.

Baba Maal due in town soon

Reports reaching What’s On indicated that the Senegalese born Mbalax star Baba Maal and his band will hold a big live concerts in The Gambia next week.

The three-day fun-filled event is exclusively organised by The Mighty Champion DJ Lamin Cham of the Champion Sound Promotions and is geared towards promoting Senegambian artistes and music through culture.

During the course of the concerts, the Senegalese superstar is will perform, alongside three other prominent Gambian stars namely, The Gambia’s Kora maestro Jaliba Kuyateh and his Kumareh Band, Sambou Suso, the melodious voice of Manding and The Gambia’s Mbalax sensation Pa Omar Jack, fondly called ‘Mr Fish and Chip’.

They are expected to perform live at Jokor Brikama, Paradise Suites Hotel near Senegambia and Jokor Westfield on May 9, 10 and 11th.

Speaking in an interview with What’s On, the Champion DJ said all the venues are set ahead of the big come-back show.

"As you known our young stars are full of talents. Remember that the Senegalese Mbalax star (Maal) is coming with full force to rock the city," he said.

According to him, bringing Senegalese artistes to The Gambia is another efforts towards cementing the bilateral between the two countries, noting that this will also enable Gambian music enthusiasts to have a taste of Senegalese artistes who are making headlines in Europe and in Americas.

Egalitarian represents Gambia at sub-regional concerts

Modou Lamin Bah, widely known by his music sobriquet Egalitarian, is currently representing The Gambia at a 16-day concert tour in Togo, Ghana and Benin, organised Plan-International Organisation for the Artist United for Rap African (AURA), as part of the child rights promotions campaign.

The sub-regional concerts will gather 17 artists from 10 different countries in West Africa, namely Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Guinea Conakry, Senegal, Mauritania, The Gambia, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

This group of artist will also storm The Gambia sometime from May 22 to 1 June 2008 as part of the Child Promotional Campaign tour.

In an Interview with What’s On, Egalitarian said this group of artists are expected to stage five(5) concerts in The Gambia.

He appealed to the general public to come out in their large numbers and attend the concerts adding that it is going to be free entrance.

The young sprouting star described the concert as a national event noting that they are working closely with Kanifing Municipal council (KMC) to ensure that the event is successfully doe in The Gambia.

"I am currently working on my third album which contains 17 sound tracks. In addition, I also work with RFI for promoting my music and have already recorded three tracks of my new album at Alliance Franco Gambienne," he said.

How fast time flies when one is in good company. In little less than three weeks, the Senegalese Mbalax icon Alieu Mbye Nder and the Setsima Group, will once again converge on the Gambian soil for yet another eye-opening concerts of lifetime experience.

Organized by New Desire Njoofen, Alieu Mbye Nder and his ensemble, will stage live concerts at Jama Hall, Jokor Brikama and Jokor Westfield respectively.

“The concerts will kick-start on 25 at Jama Hall and will be repeated to audiences at Jokor Brikama on 26 and then Jokor Westfield on 27,” Entertainment was hinted.

228 commemorative events scheduled in Taipei City

The Taipei City Government will host a series of concerts and an art exhibition starting on Tuesday to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the 228 Incident.

Thanks to record collector Lin Tai-wei, the public will also be able to hear the first Taiwanese song banned by the government in 1934 - Wandering in the Streets - using a victrola during the concert.

Sharing his collection of records during a press conference at the 228 Memorial Museum on Friday, Lin said the song was banned because it described the difficulties experienced by people in finding employment and feeding their families as a result of a sluggish economy.

The event will also feature an art exhibition with 48 paintings collected by a 228 victim’s family member, Liao De-cheng.

The 228 Incident refers to the Chinese Nationalist Party’s (KMT) bloody crackdown on demonstrators and local elite under Dictator Chiang Kai-shek’s administration. On the night of Feb. 27, 1947, a woman named Lin Chiang-mai, who had been selling smuggled cigarettes in Taipei, was beaten with a pistol by an agent from the Taiwan Monopoly Bureau.

Lin was left bloody and unconscious on the ground. An angry crowd gathered and turned on the agents, who fired their guns wildly to escape, killing a man named Chen Wen-hsi. When monopoly agents were discovered pistol-whipping two children for a similar offense the following day, an angry crowd beat the agents to death. The incident then sparked island-wide anti-KMT protests and riots.

KMT troops were rushed from China in early March to quell the disturbances and as a result tens of thousands of Taiwanese were killed.

The Taipei City Cultural Affairs Department on Friday invited residents to claim free concert tickets at the department, City Stage or the 228 Memorial Museum.

Reports reaching What’s On ,has revealed that the Senegalese born Mbalax star Baba Maal and his group are currently warming up to storm the smiling coast of The Gambia sometime this coming easter Organised by Champions Sounds Promotion, this will be Baba Maal’s first concerts live in The Gambia this year and will witness the release of Maals new album.

In an interview with What’s On, The President Award winning DJ Lamin Cham of Champion Sounds said this upcoming event will be historic as will enable the Senegalese born international star to expose his new talents.

According to him, the main idea behind organising such concerts is to give music fans and music lovers the very best flavours from our Senegambian stars. The Jamaican Royal family of reggae music, Morgan Heritage are expected to perform today at the Independent Stadium, Bakau.

The United States Jamaican based world renowned reggae family arrived in the country on Monday at about 13:30 pm from Senegal where they held a series of concerts in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

They were received at the Banjul International Airport by members of the excutive of the organising committee of their upcoming mega concerts amid hundreds of music enthisiasts who later escorted them from the airport terminal through the streets of Greater Banjul Area.

Meanwhile, Franky Dancehall Paul, a distinguished and reputed Jamaican reggae dancehall genius, who has been visiting the country is also expected to perform alongside other top-rated Gambian artists.

A line of programmes are being organised by Bright Star Production in collaboration with the Jammeh Foundation for Peace. The main idea behind the programe is to raise funds to augment the resource base of JFP.

In an interview with what’s on shortly before their arrival, Ansumana Drammeh, chairperson of the Media and Publicity Sub-commitee said JFP is solely sponsored by President Yahya Jammeh. According to him, coming up with such an idea, will greatly help to boost the foundation.

The GRTS showbiz (Goudi Samdi) anchor Drammeh further revealed that during the Jamaican Royal Family’s stay in the country, they will stage their first photo and autography session at ccon Wednesady. “On Friday, there will be a live performance at Brikama Jokor on January 25, and Saturday February 26, will be the main concert at the Independent Stadium;” he said.

He therefore, called on the general public, government institutions, the private sector and all those concerned with the welfare of Gambians to come out in numbers to support this worthy cause.
