Current Feed ContentViva les Scorpions!Tuesday, October 14, 2008 Victory is sweet; but sweetest is a victory that makes history. Such is the victory of last Saturday, as the Scorpions stung the mighty Lions of Teranga in the heart of Imagine, as in the words of a particular sporting pundit, ‘in 46 years, Gambians have never gone to In the beginning, expectations were high, as all that the people needed was victory. Although the Scorpions drew against the clearly formidable Senegalese side, depending on your understanding of the politics of the sporting history between the two countries’ national teams, the result of last Saturday’s Dakar derby had an air of historic significance around it; more so for the Gambians than for their formerly glorious Senegalese opponents. In any case, thanks to a dominant new generation of youngsters, that humiliating trend is increasingly becoming history. The If you have had any idea what it felt like for not only the Senegalese but the rest of Black Africa when that lone Papa Buba Jobe goal, which eventually demoralized an unforgiving France during the 1998 World Cup finals, was gotten, you would know what it feels like today for the slightly over one and a half million Gambians. By their actions in Leopold Sedat Senghor Stadium, the mighty Scorpions did not only prove to the rest of the world that The Gambia is truly on a revolutionary voyage of no-return, but the result of their actions also confirmed their unstoppable taste for progress. We owe a lot of commendation to the leadership of this country for being behind the promotion of sport, and football in particular, since the beginning. President Jammeh himself has been involved directly; it is either sponsoring fans to cheer up the boys on away matches, or acknowledging the boys’ efforts by giving them money and landed properties. The president’s landmark involvement in the hiring of the current Scorpions coach, Paul Putt, is demonstrable of this. Mr Paul Putt and his boys, along with all those behind them in their endeavours, can rest assured of the country’s continued and unflinching support; of course from the leadership at the top, right down to the ordinary Gambian. For now though, the feeling of happiness is inestimable. We congratulate the boys for their well merited victory, and for making us feel proud. Jarama Scorpion! Author: DO A worth-while ventureTuesday, September 09, 2008 Editor, Please, allow me space in your most widely read newspaper to express my singular honour and gratitude to congratulate the board of directors and management of Senegambia Beach Hotel on the recent development in the infrastructure of the hotel. Special congratulation goes to its able, visionary and dynamic general manager for his exemplary leadership. He is a manager I would like to give credit to and thank most profoundly for a wonderful gesture. I wish to take this opportunity to urge other managers in the hospitality sector to emulate him in order to evolve the human resource capacity in the hotels, as together we can build a modern nation. This year's renovation of Senegambia is one of the most extensive exercises ever embarked on since the inception of the hotel. A renovation of such magnitude is very vital in the activities of hospitality providers and it goes a long way in promoting tourism, as well as adding an extra value in the goods and services of a particular establishment or organisation. There is no doubt that the board of directors have exorbitantly invested a huge amount of money in this innovation exercise which of course is providential and in demand f tourism requirements hence one of the basic components of tourism is attractions, and attraction is tourism. Therefore, mass tourism cannot take place without innovation or changes in our infrastructure and attractions. So I would like to assure the board of directors of Senegambia Beach Hotel that they are on the right course, and I want to assure them of my optimism of it yielding dividend. I am appealing to all stakeholders to give a very robust priority to innovation just like Senegambia Beach Hotel has done for tourism sustainability and market growth. Bravo to the board of directors of Senegambia and keep up the momentum. Sambou Dampha Senegambia Author: DO Gunjurians Congratulate Newly Elected SIC PresidentTuesday, August 26, 2008 Villagers in Gunjur have congratulated the newly elected president of the Supreme Islamic Council of The Gambia Muhammed Lamin Touray who is himself a native of the village. He said that the newly elected president of the SIC is a good man and always shows sympathy for other Muslims and described him as a peacemaker in society. He finally described the newly elected president as “hard working and committed to his duties”. Author: By Lamin Darboe Bravo Muhammed JahTuesday, August 26, 2008 Editor, Please, allow me space to write and congratulate Mr Muhammed Jah, the proprietor of QuantumNet Company, for a job well done. I was very elated when I read on your newspaper that the Department of State for Communication, Information and Information Technology has approved the fourth GSM company in The Gambia, owned by Muhammed Jah. What a superb and a splendid idea to bring communication to our doorsteps? Muhammed Jah is a technologist and a scrupulous businessman who is contributing immensely to the technological development in The Gambia; and with his unequalled concern for the technological development of the country, I have no doubt that he will put The Gambia in the limelight. The onus lies on Gambians to support him to bridge the digital divide because technology bridges nations. Therefore, I challenge Gambians in the diaspora and at home to emulate Muhammed Jah. He is unlike other Gambians who only work to undermine the peace of this country by writing untrue stories about The Gambia on the internet. Bravo once again Mr Jah. May Allah the Almighty protect your business and the entire Gambia. by Lamin Jarjue Brikama Author: DO Congratulations President JammehTuesday, July 29, 2008 Editor, Please give me some space to congratulate His Excellency, the President, Alhaji Dr Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, on celebrations marking the 14th anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution. 22nd July is a day that is worth celebrating, because for some of us, it has some independence connotation. I think everybody should agree that what we have achieved within this short period, we couldn’t do it in over 30 years of independence. Gambians should be really proud of His Excellency. I call on all Gambians - be they at home or abroad – to give the president a hand so that his dream for The Gambia will come through soonest. Insha Allah, the Almighty Allah will guide and protect us, because he has good intentions for The Gambia, our beloved motherland. Long live President Jammeh; long live The Gambia. Peace! Peace! Peace! Ali Hydara U.K Author: DO Morocco king, others congratulate Jammeh![]() Thursday, July 24, 2008 King Mohammed VI of the Kingdom of Morocco has congratulated President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh on the occasion of the 14th anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution. National Assembly In a similar message, Hon Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, the speaker of the National Assembly, also registered her congratulations on the occasion, on behalf of the two divides of the National Assembly and her own behalf. “It is an undisputed and open fact that July 22nd revolution has indeed truly emancipated the people of The Gambia and has registered and continues to register unprecedented developments in the history of this country. This is evident in the number of schools built, hospitals, roads, women and youth empowerment, good governance, rule of law, democracy, freedom of speech, respect for human rights and other developments you have undertaken since taking over the reigns of this country in 1994. Your Excellency, both sides of the National Assembly salute your tremendous achievements and we will continue to support and rally behind your Excellency for the realisation of your Vision 2020, Silicon Valley and the Green Revolution/Green Industry dreams of transforming The Gambia into a superpower and a beacon of hope for all humanity,” the speaker said. Gambian Embassy in Madrid Similarly, the Gambian Ambassador to Madrid, Spain, has also congratulated the president on the anniversary, on behalf of his staff and himself. And may I once again, re-affirm Gamworks’ unflinching determination and dedication to work with the government to fulfil His Excellency the President’s ambition and aspiration for The Gambia and the Gambian people,” Mr Cham stated, while renewing assurance of his highest consideration and esteem. Author: DO Wallidan and Samger share spoils![]() Monday, July 07, 2008 Front-runners, Wallidan and Samger, fought a tooth-and-nail goalless draw last night at a crowded Serrekunda West Community Stadium, as the race for the GFA division one league crown gets more complicated and fascinating. The stalemate result, which was rather a good news to ears of Hawks faithfuls, means both Wallidan and Samger are still level on points (36 points a piece) at the top, with the former having a two-goal leverage over the latter. Close contenders, Hawks, can join them at the top to renew a three-horse race if they can beat Steve Biko today at the Independence Stadium. Yesterday’s result, which was a repeat of their first-round score line, left both coaches optimistic of clinching the title. Wallidan coach, Foday Bah, told Observer Sports shortly after the final whistle that winning the title in still on the card, though they will meet a much matured team in Hawks in the final match. “It was a good game and I am going to congratulate Samger for good their display,” he said. “We are meeting Hawks in our final match and we are going to prepare for them and I am optimistic that we are going to beat them and claim the title.” His counterpart, Jane Joof, is also confident that Samger will lift the crown in the face of the big guns. “Statistically, we are very much in the frame compared to our fellow contenders. Wallidan will next play against Hawks who are also in the title race, and we are facing a side (Steve Biko) who are not. So I think we have it in our own hands,” he said. Author: by Nanama Keita Thank you President Jammeh!Thursday, June 26, 2008 Editor, Please, on behalf of the Alkalo, Council of Elders, women and youths of Foni Jarrol and on my own behalf, I hereby write to appeal for a space in your newspaper to extend our sincere thanks to His Excellency, Alhagi Dr. Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, president of the Republic, for the handsome gesture he extended to us recently, on the occasion of our recent cup celebration. Sir, these donations came at the right time, without which the celebration would not have been successful. Once again, on behalf of the entire community of the village, I seize this opportunity to congratulate you for your wonderful development programmes such as herbal treatment, peace building, your support for education, sports, Agriculture and other fields and, indeed, for your attitude of caring and sharing. May Allah the Almighty reward you and your family abundantly. We wish you long life, wisdom, peace, progress and prosperity in ruling this country, forever. Please accept, your Excellence, the assurances of our unflinching support to your calls for nationalism. Sheriffo A Sanneh Jarrol Youth Development Association Author: DO Open letter to IGP BadjieTuesday, June 24, 2008 Editor, Allow me space to use this medium to help my brother to take the force to higher heights. I want to congratulate you for the appointment and trust you have earned yourself - thanks to your good family. My advice to you is forget infighting. No room for side talks, no groupings, no fans clubs, no revenge - just be a professional. You are the IGP and remember: you cannot be left out from criticism particularly the media in the dispora. Start from where IGP Benedict stopped and continue from there. He of course did so many good things so it’s from the good things you start and amend his bad ones. Learn how to forget all those whom you think were fighting you. The Police Force is there to stay. Set good precedents. Just take a good example of Tamsir Jasseh. When he was in authority, he arrested people himself, parked vehicles at Bakau longer than required by law, physically assaulted foreigners and even tortured people. Later he became the worse enemy of society! Follow and respect the Constitution, the Police Act and all other Laws of the Land. Encourage the young ones. Put the relevant people in the relevant places. Don't forget that you alone cannot make it so put everybody on-board, then we will have a professional police force. With all this advice, you shall never be removed disgracefully but elevated to higher heights. The reason is, when you were enlisted you swore on the Qur’an and said some things so when you do otherwise Allah will punish you. Long live Jesus-IGP. Long live the Police Force. Long Live the Gambia. Mariama Jallow Author: DO Forward with The GambiaThursday, June 19, 2008 Editor, I would be very grateful if you can kindly give me some space in your newspaper, as I would like to congratulate His Excellency, President Dr Alh Yahya A.J.J Jammeh, for the last Saturday game between The Gambia and Algeria. The president, of course, does not leave any development behind. And it follows that sports is very important and everyone knows that Gambia is a tourist destination. Indeed many people do hear of the Gambia or know were the Gambia is located but, I think if we qualify for the 2010 world cup as we did during the under 17 world cup and under 21 world cup finals, I think that will be the time for the whole world to know The Gambia more and were The Gambia is located. I call on all Gambians to pray for His Excellency because he is the number one supporter of Gambian football. Meanwhile, I wish the boys all the best. Forward with the Gambia.
