Sources said so far the five arrested are: Titi Sawaneh from Niamina Bani, Amadou Gaye of Kuntaur who is the president of the Niani Fishermen’s Association, Banna Sillah from Kuntaur Jakaba, a man reported to have once had a bitter disagreement with the late Imam, Balla Conteh and Ms Kadja Conteh. Amadou Jallow was reported to have been stabbed sixteen times over his body as he was preparing to go and lead the early morning prayers at the mosque, thus resulting in his untimely death. According to Fatou Sal, wife of the late Imam Jallow, some days before the fateful day, her late husband has been complaining of receiving text messages threatening to kill him. She explained that on that fateful morning, her husband woke up and heard a knock at the door at a time when it was raining heavily, and upon opening the door, he was attacked, sprayed before being stabbed. The incident, which has sparked serious concerns within the
region, is said to have followed a prolonged Imamship crisis in the Author: By: Abdourahman Sallah in CRR SoS Jammeh, Nawec MD Jallow inspect Fajikunda Health Centre![]() Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Ousman Jammeh, the secretary of state for Petroleum and Energy, accompanied by Momodou Jallow, the managing director of NAWEC and other senior staff of NAWEC, yesterday visited the Fajikunda Health Centre, following a scary electricity sparks on Sunday night, which sent patients and staff out of the facility. The visit was meant to inspect cause of the incident and map out plans to end its reoccurence there. Upon arrival at the health centre, the SoS and his delegation were received by Julah Jaiteh, the officer-in-charge of the health centre, who thanked the delegation for reaching out to them. She reconfirmed that the incident occurred on Sunday night, while she was in her room and heard people shouting fire! fire!. According to her, upon her arrival at the facility, she saw the patients and nurses on duty running out of the ward shouting. “I then quickly asked the ambulance driver to switch-off the main meter which automatically turned-off the high supply in the health centre”, she explained. The NAWEC personnel were also called in and did some wiring job and the light came back. She expressed hope that such a thing would not happen again. For his part, Ousman Jammeh, the secretary of state for Petroleum and Energy, said the visit was due to the report he gathered about the incident and advised that certain facilities should be carefully looked at and installed at appropriate places to avoid panics in cases of emergency. He advised the health centre maintenance team to re-locate those switches which were said to be installed by Italians in the health centre outside the wards to a suitable places. He urged the health centre officials to alert NAWEC on such emergency cases on 169. Momodou Jallow, the managing director Director of NAWEC, informed the team that the problem was not from the NAWEC, but it was internal “There was a short circuit after the meter which was an underground connection, believed to have been installation long time; for more than 20 years. Naturally, things may happen, but when it happens, the people in charge should alert them so that they can come in to help in where it is necessary. This is why we advised consumers to inspect installations and make sure that they up grade them when they increase the appliances”, he urged. Mr Jallow expressed his department’s resolve to make sure that electricity supply is normal. “The most important thing that I would like the public to note is that, our work at NAWEC is only limited to supplying the flow of electricity up to the meter, but we are not responsible for any internal installation of facilities. So anything after the meter is the responsibility of the consumer. This is why with regards to all installations, it is important to inspect the installed facilities and appliance in the consumers premises”, he further advised. Mr Jallow went on to explain that they are aware of the fact that fingers are pointed at Nawec for any little problem. He described this as a challenge and assured that they will continue to sensitise the public about their operations. Author: by Musa Ndow What Is Internet Fax?![]() Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Internet Fax is simply using the Internet or your email system to send and receive faxes. Since it is web based, you can send your faxes anytime anywhere; as long as you have an Internet connection and these days that's available just about everywhere. You sign up with an Internet fax service provider to get your own fax number (local or toll free) which you use in the same manner as you would use any fax number. There is a small charge for this service but keep in mind you do not need an extra phone line to do Internet faxing since everything is done online. Many small and large business owners are switching over to Internet Fax for some obvious advantages: it is very convenient, it is very fast, it offers more privacy, many faxes can be sent/received simultaneously (no busy signals) and it is available wherever you have the Internet. Plus there are no messy fax machines and no need for a second phone line. One of the most asked questions about Internet Fax relates to the confusion over just how the whole thing works. Many traditional fax users can't quite get their heads around the idea of having faxes without the traditional fax machine. Basically, you sign up with a fax service provider and get your own fax number and you send/receive your faxes thru your email system - your fax is attached to an email as either a TIFF or PDF format file. You can access your faxes from an online interface (your fax login site) where your faxes are received and sent. You can also store your faxes online there. What confuses most people who are not familiar with online faxing is the question: can I still send my faxes to the old traditional machines, since many of my business partners may not be using Internet Fax? The answer is YES! You can send your faxes to the old traditional fax machine and if they have your fax number, they can still return a fax to you via the old traditional manner or fax machine. Here's how Internet Fax works: You use a fax gateway or Internet Fax provider/server to handle your faxes. For example, say if you were sending a fax. Computer/Internet -> Fax provider/server -> Phone line -> Fax machine You use your computer and the Internet to log into your online account/page to send your fax to your fax provider/server which then uses the phone line to send your fax to the receiving fax machine. If you are receiving a Fax Fax machine -> Phone line -> Fax provider/server -> Email message (thru Internet) -> Your Email account Someone uses a fax machine to send you a fax which goes thru the phone line to your fax provider/server which converts it into a TIFF or PDF file and sends you an email message with your fax attached in your email. If both parties are using Internet Fax, then your faxes can be sent/received using your email systems over the Internet. Computer/email -> Fax provider/server -> Computer/email What you really have to keep in mind, once you sign up for an Internet fax service you will have an online interface (login site) where you can send and receive your faxes. Then when you send or receive a fax, you get a confirmation in your web interface and/or by email. This offers some great advantages such as receiving and sending your faxes whenever and wherever you access the Internet. No more busy signals, no more messy fax machines, no more nosy workers seeing the contents of your fax, and no extra phone line. Plus, many faxes can be sent/received simultaneously, even when your computer is turned off. No more missed faxes because your phone line was busy. However, in order to get all these advantages you have to sign up for an Internet fax service. There are many well known Internet fax providers such as MyFax, eFax, RapidFax, TrustFax, Send2Fax... and some very good lesser known faxing companies such as MetroHiSpeed out of Seattle and Faxage out of Denver. A word of caution, when signing up for any long term business service it pays to do your homework first. It pays to shop around mainly because even any small savings may prove significant over the long haul. Prices can range from very cheat (under $20 a year) to around $10 - $15 a month depending on the kind of service you need. There are many different plans and services, and keep in mind, you will pay more for International faxing. Internet Fax seems to be the way of the future as more and more businesses go online. Besides, as we become more and more modernized, computers are offering us simple and convenient solutions to many of our daily traditional business tasks such as faxing. Can your business or any company really afford to be left behind or not take advantage of the benefits of Internet Fax? Can you still remain competitive without Internet Fax? It's your call? Author: By Abba A.S Gibba & Yai Dibba Source: The Point What can you do to Speed up the Internet?![]() Monday, November 12, 2007 The Internet’s never going to be fast enough, but follow our tips and it’ll be faster than what is was. Anyone who has ever used their own home computer to demonstrate the Internet to a friend who’s never seen it before knows there’s one question that occurs more than any other: Why is it so slow? As the kind person showing your friend the delights of the online experience, it’s hard not to feel a little offended. How dare they criticize your setup and the majesty of the Internet? But, of course, there’s a lot of truth in the question. The Internet is slow. Actually, it’s good to be reminded of this, because the chances are there’s a lot that can be done to speed it up. There are three main areas to consider. Hardware, software, and the phone line. Hardware Lets begin with your computer. Modern web browsers require lots of system resources. Any recent computer fits the bill, but what if you have to make do with something older? Adding more ram is good, especially if you have less than 256mb. Consider adding a faster hard disk. It won’t speed up downloads from the Internet, but avoids windows slowing things down by swapping files from RAM to disk, and your browser should be able to work more quickly. Don’t forget your modem. If you’re still using a 56k modem, then perhaps it’s time to upgrade to ISDN or ADSL. It needn’t cost the earth either. Broadband Internet is becoming so popular that many home users have already upgraded to this option. Most ISP’s will throw in a free router as part of the package. If you don’t have a network card in your computer to support the router, then perhaps it is time to upgrade that old PC. You may be thinking that it’s OK because you’ve had a 56k modem for years. But the money you’re wasting on dial-up and slow downloads could be considerably higher than if you resorted to broadband internet. Check with your local ISP about broadband packages on special. If you are going to purchase your own router, make sure your operating system and computer will support the new router. Your local computer store will most probably offer you free advice on the best way to setup your router. Software If you are going to stick with 56k modems, hardly anyone is happy with their speed, a dissatisfaction which has bred a brand new genre – utilities designed to speed things up. One major subcategory is the accelerator, a program which speeds up your browser in two different ways. First, they replace the browser’s cache with their own faster, smarter version. Second, they help make the most of your available bandwidth. Normally, when you’ve downloaded a web page, your modem is idle while you read it. Accelerator programs take advantage of this, working through the links on the page, and downloading them while you read. This is known as pre-fetching. When you click on a link, if it’s already been fetched, then you see it speedily displayed from your own hard disk instead of having to wait for it to come from the Internet. This sounds ideal, but there are a few problems. Accelerators can be intrusive, and it’s possible for all this background activity to slow you down. It’s also hit-and-miss whether the next link you click will be to one of the pages pre-fetched by the accelerator. If it’s not, you won’t see any benefit at all. Also, Internet purists argue that accelerators can slow down the Internet for everyone because they increase Internet traffic by fetching pages that might never be viewed. Despite big claims for them of speed increases of 10 times or more, most people are unlikely to see more than 50% improvement at best and tasks such as downloading files will be no faster at all. Another software category tries to optimize Windows Dial-Up Networking. This is normally done through the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). The theory behind this is complex, but basically all Internet data sent to and from your computer travels in little chunks called packets. MTU defines the maximum size of each packet and the default MTU setting isn’t suitable for modem connections – by changing it, so the theory goes, you can get a big speed increase. Is it true? Some people report improved performance, others report no change at all. It’s important to use the right tools for the job. If you’re downloading, use a download manager to speed things up. A good download manager checks for mirror sites to see which is faster, and even switches between sites during the download to get the best performance. You can even schedule downloads for off peak hours. Phone Line A major bottleneck in your Internet connection is your telephone line. Standard phone technology just isn’t good enough for speedy downloads. Therefore, you should seriously consider the other possibilities, ISDN and ADSL. Logging on is very quick compared to the tedious wait during dial-up. Rental could be high, but check with a few ISP’s and you may find it’s much cheaper than you imagined. If you need improved speed, the costs may be worth it. Plus, you will have a 24 hours always-on connection. The faster your modem goes, the more pleasant your Internet experience will be. Author: by Sandra Prior Source: amazines.com What Is DSL?![]() Monday, August 27, 2007 DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It is a service that makes the use of existing copper telephone wires for delivering data services at extremely fast speed rates. It does not hamper the existing telephone line. You can surf the Internet and talk on the phone, simultaneously. DSL offers speeds that are around 5 to 25 times higher than a typical 56Kb dial-up connection. It is an always-on type of connection. This implies that websites would load quickly, downloads would be faster, buffering of videos would be fast and smooth and the domain of Online games would be illimitable. Based on the types of service, DSL can be can be categorized in three divisions which are ASDL, IDSL and SDSL. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. It offers download speed of 1.5 Mbps and upload speed of 384 K. In order to acquire a ADSL connection, your location has to be within 3 miles of your local telephone office. Also, a DSL router is needed for this type of connection. IDSL is a ISDN Digital Subscriber Line service which requires an ISDN router. It provides a connection speed of 144 K. in this type of connection distance is not a component to be considered. SDSL means Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The speeds available under this type of DSL connection depends on the distance between your location and your local telephone office. The speed of downloads and uploads can go up to 1.1 Mbps. Advantages of DSL No installation of new wires is required. DSL uses the present telephone line to connect to the Internet. It provides extremely fast connection. Depending on the offer, you would not even have to pay for the DSL modem installation charges, since it is provided free by some of the companies on selection of the appropriate plan. The download rate is much higher in DSL connections. Many business organizations have gained the benefits of DSL. A DSL connection is very secure. Disadvantages of DSL The quality of your DSL connection depends on the distance between the DSL providers office and your location. Nearer you are, the better quality connection would you get. So, consumers located far from the local DSL office may face some trouble. DSL provide high speeds for downloading stuff but upload speeds are not that good. DSL vs Cable Modems The services provided through a cable modem can sometimes slow down or get hanged. It depends on the number of users accessing that particular service. But, in a DSL connection there is no such problem. The speed of DSL is consistent and high. This does not allow any kind of conjunction on the network. It provides more security than the cable modem connections. The popularity of DSL has risen to new heights which has resulted in disconnections and up gradations of the cable modem connections.
