We also congratulate the Alkalo, community leaders and residents of the area for their responsible action in bringing this kind of activity to the attention of the police thus making their job easier. The whole operation is a glowing example of the kinds of results that can be achieved when the police and the community work together for the betterment of our nation. An effective operation such as this one builds trust between the police and the community and will continue to yield great results for a long time to come. The blossoming of the relationship in this case is clear from the words of Abdoulie Joof, the Alkalo of Kololi, who wrote to the Inspector General of Police. He said, ”we promise that we are ready to collaborate with the entire police fraternity to have an effective police-community relationship in order to eliminate all unconstitutional vices within the Community.” The world over, community policing and the encouragement of good relations between police and the communities they are protecting have been shown to be extremely effective in combating crime. Among the most positive aspects of the situation is that the relationship is mutually beneficial. The community gets a much more effective police service in their area and the police get the benefit of local knowledge and information which makes their job far easier. Other communities in The Gambia should follow the example set by the community of Kololi and engage with their police force. The police must reciprocate and be seen to be fair, just and incorruptible in the dispensation of their duties. If this situation comes to pass then we will all enjoy the fruits and live in a safer, crime free Gambia. Gambia, Guinea strengthen ties
Monday, July 21, 2008 The Gambia and Guinea have renewed commitment to the bilateral cooperation between Banjul and Conakry, following a recent state visit to the sister republic by President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, accompanied by a high-powered delegation, on July 14. President Jammeh was received upon arrival at the Conakry International Airport by Dr Ahmed Tidiane Souaré, the prime minister of Guinea, on behalf of President Lansana Conté. Malick Sanko, the governor of Conakry, high profile officials of Guinea and members of the Gambian community were also at the airport to receive the Gambia leader. According to GRTS, part of Dr Jammeh’s engagement was to express solidarity with Guineans and to renew the bilateral agreements that bind the two peoples together. Conakry and Banjul have had excellent relations, underpinned by the aspiration of their people to find common solutions to their problems with a uniform pattern of development. The presidential entourage received a rapturous reception as Guineans nationals gathered on the side lanes of the main highway to the official presidential residence, where Dr Jammeh had an audience with his counterpart, President Lasana Conté. President Conté has been out of action as a result of a reported stroke but his health has improved greatly and he still enjoys immense popularity. The Guinean leader had pursued a Pan-African approach to key regional and continental issues. On Tuesday, Dr Jammeh met the Gambian community in Conakry, where they had the opportunity to discuss their welfare. Many Gambian expatriates work in the mining sector, while a good number of them engage in the re-export trade, which has been the key area of interaction between Conakry and Banjul. Their welfare has been thoroughly handled by the Gambian Embassy in Bissau and its consular bureau in Conkary. Cherno Touray, the Gambian ambassador in Bissau, said the show of welcome accorded to President Jammeh in Bissau and again in Conakry is a manifestation of the love and confidence the expatriates bestowed on him. Alhagie Momodou Gaye, the Gambian consul general in Conakry, said Gambian nationals are law abiding ambassadors, who have never betrayed the trust of his bureau. Guineans have on their part, reciprocated the friendship extended to their nationals in The Gambia and have ensured that Gambians based in Conakry have their rights and welfare looked after. Many of the speakers had been living in Guinea for decades and found the country ideal for business, as Gambian interest is highly protected. Nyima Trawally and Fatoumatta Drammeh felicitated Dr Jammeh for recognising women. Dr Omar Touray, the secretary of state for Foreign Affairs, said the president’s visit renewed the commitment of his counterpart in ensuring the protocols that guide relations between their governments are enforced. The Gambia leader, he said, has gone the extra mile to ensure the welfare of Gambians. President Jammeh, who was later involved with other official engagements, was represented at the meeting by the secretary of state for Fisheries and Water Resources, Yankuba Touray. SoS Touray enjoined Gambian nationals to play an ambassadorial role in their stay in Conakry. SoS Touray donated on behalf of President Jammeh, US$15,000, to assist the consular bureau in its transactions. As Gambians get more involved in business, the price of basic commodities, as in other parts of the world, continues to soar. The Guinean currency has depreciated greatly and a bag of rice costs 215,000 Guinean Franc (equivalent to D1,250). During the visit, the ministerial committees of the two governments held closed door sessions and a joint communiqué was issued by the two leaders at the end of a four-day working visit. The draft communique outlined the governments’ commitment to bolstering existing trade relations and their joint interest to secure their borders against foreign aggression. The communiqué also entails cooperation in the areas of fisheries, commerce, transport, the civil service and tourism. During the visit, President Jammeh appealed to Guineans to treasure the natural resources their country has been endowed with and work for a common solution and strategy to solve their problems. He warned against division, saying that measures that some wanted to resort to will only cost the country more. President Jammeh thanked the Guinean authorities for ensuring that Gambians in Conakry live in peace. Author: DO VP opens joint commission

She then reiterated The Gambia government’s appreciation to President Jao Bernado Nino Vieira of Guinea Bissau for attending the AU Summit in Banjul in June/July 2006. For his part, Martinho N’dafa Cabi, the prime minister of Guinea Bissau, amplified that the two countries share cultural and historical ties, but colonisation divided people. He expressed appreciation with the warm and friendly welcome accorded to him since arrival, noting that this showed a good signal of the brotherly relations between Banjul and Bissau. Prime Minister Cabi then used the opportunity to convey President Vieira’s warm congratulation and greetings to President Jammeh and the Gambian people. His remarks came on the heels of the visit by the Taiwan Mobile Medical Team, which arrived in the country last Sunday on a two-week long humanitarian medical mission. PS Samba, who welcomed the medical team on behalf of the secretary of state for Health and Social Welfare, revealed that Taiwan provides subvention for the allowances of the Cuban medical contingent to Banjul and support in combating epidemics. He also spoke about the twinning agreement between RVTH and Taichung Hospital, which is located 250km from the Taiwanese capital of Taipei. As part of efforts to operationalise the twinning agreement, PS Samba said a delegation of senior officials from the country’s main referral hospital recently visited Taiwan, where matters captured in the Banjul pact were discussed. Mr Samba, who was upbeat about the relationship, described the visit as a success, as it prepares the ground for future collaboration. According to him, the recent state visit by President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh will go a long way towards broadening the scope of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, noting that health is featured as a key priority in this process. PS Samba told the Daily Observer that the visit of the mobile medical team sets the stage for the sharing of experiences, which runs to strengthen capacity. The Taiwan-International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF)-backed medical team comprises 11 specialists, including nurses and an assistant coordinator. They have since been deployed to Sulayman Junkung Hospital in Bwiam, Western Region, and are expected to have their next stop, this week, at the AFPRC Hospital in Farafenni, North Bank Region. Scholars recited the Holy Qur’an and the solemn gathering was attended by prominent Imams, including Ousainou Baye of Sukuta, Baba Leigh of Kanifing, and Barham Jobe. Speaking in an interview with the Daly Observer, Momodou Musa Joof, managing director designate of the Takaful Insurance Company, who has 12 years working experience in the insurance industry, said he came to know about Islamic insurance in Malaysia and decided to introduce it in The Gambia upon his return. Ebou Waggeh, marketing consultant of Takaful Insurance Company, said the company is meant to cater for those who would like to use Sharia compliant insurance services. Mr Waggeh added that the company is the first of its kind in West Africa. According to him, Takaful is based on the concept of solidarity, cooperation and mutual understanding. Drawing a distinctive contrast between conventional insurance and Takaful, Mr Waggeh said the company is visible in terms of investment of funds, while conventional insurance companies invest their funds based on interest avenues. However, Mr Waggeh was quick to add that Takaful is not a new concept, as far as the insurance commercial law is concerned. “It has been in existence since the time of the Holy Prophet. Whenever calamity occured in those days, people contributed to give to the victims,” he explained. He described this as a principle based on reciprocity, compensation and joint responsibility. Imam Baba Leigh, welcomed the company to the insurance landscape of The Gambia, stressing that its introduction is a step in the right direction. “Islam is a religion of truth and this is a genuine case. But people need to be sensitised intensively about this Islamic insurance company,” he observed. The Kanifing East Imam then urged the management of Takaful to be steadfast in their work. Oustass Abdoulie Drammeh expressed delight with the company, saying that Takaful has come to help Muslims to spend their wealth in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Author: by Buya Jammeh President Jammeh leaves for Taipei![]() Tuesday, December 04, 2007 President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, has left Banjul with a high powered delegation for Taipei, Taiwan, on a six-day working visit. The Gambian leader was seen off at the Banjul International Airport, yesterday in the morning, by the Vice President Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, who was joined at the take-off by the speaker of the National Assembly, the chief justice, members of the Cabinet, and service chiefs, amongst other dignitaries. The Taipei visit is seen as another brotherly visit that will deepen bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and the Asian-Pacific island state. In September this year, the Taiwanese President Chen Sui-bien, was eager to receive his Gambian counterpart at the first-ever Taiwan-Africa Heads of State Summit in Taipei, at which President Jammeh could not be present due to pressing state matters. However, the Gambian leader was ably represented by the Vice President Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy on that occasion. Convinced of the friendly ties between the two countries, President Chen warmly renewed his invitation through the vice president to receive President Jammeh on a working visit. President Jammeh is expected to be received with impressive alacrity upon his arrival by President Chen himself and senior members of his government at Taipei airport. Author: by Ebrima Jaw Manneh |
