As Concept Media Get Launch Today

Having carefully segmented its markets as a necessity to understanding the true needs of Gambia’s advertising industry, Media Vision, a registered company that takes care of media needs in the country will today launch a new company called Concept Media.

Expected to take care of advertisements and the film industry in the country, the coming of Concept Media into the country’s advertising and film industry is seen by many as a move in the right direction.

Under the Umbrella body of Media Vision an organisation that houses and owns the Daily Express newspaper, Concept Media will also serve as the representatives of organisations, branding organisation names, promotions and advertisements in the media.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Point, Babatunde Olaitan commonly known as Baba T, Consult Manager of Concept Media, said his company is out to complement the efforts of the advertising industry in The Gambia with a new look by re-branding the media and the advertising industry.

“Concept Media is a house that is here to take care of TV advertisements, radio jingles, newspaper adverts, designing and all sort of adverts in a proper and efficient manner,” he said.

According to Baba T, Concept Media will from today be out to take care of advertisements in the country and the film industry pertaining to what is in the country. “These are some of the things that Concept Media is out to do,” he said.

In Baba T’s view, Concept Media knows the constraints that media houses face in dealing with adverts, saying that is why they are out to re-brand the industry.

“We want to help organisations and assure them that we are going to put them on the right track. We also want to assure newspapers that working with us is going to be a success,” he noted.

Four leading Nigerian comedian...Four leading Nigerian comedian...Four leading Nigerian comedian...

In less than a week ,one of the celebrated names in Nollywood, Nigeria will arrive in The Gambia  as a prelude to the arrivals of three other big personalities  from Nigerain Nollywood industry.

According to Dr Samuel Wilcox, Chief Executive Offier (CEO) of Chartered  House, Francis Duru, an icon in the Nigerian film industry will arrive in Banjul  on Saturday on board Bellview Airlines to set a pace for the coming of four of leading Nigerian dwarf comedians Aki & Popo, Osofia "Nkem" and Mama G also known as Patience Uzuokwo .

The arrival of Francis as stated  by Dr Wilcox will serve as a confidence building measure and will provide an opportunity for the greater Gambian public and actors, actress and aspiring ones to come face to face with the famous Nigerian celebrities.

"We want to understudy The Gambian market as we did in Ghana and see how best to create that avenue which will offer Gambian actors and actress the opportunity to star in Nollywood because there is currently no Gambian actor in the Nollywood industry," said Dr Wilcox.

The Chartered House CEO disclosed that the arrival into the country of Francis  Duru and subsequently  the Nigerian celebrities in the names of Aki, Popo, Mama G and Osofia  will further promote Cultural   exchange as well enable Gambian dramatists to break new ground in the film industry.

Dr Wilcox noted that "The visits will also allow the film stars to meet and collaborate with their counterparts in The Gambia to chart out ways forward for the a meaningful partnership and fruitful professional relationship. This will also help promote the Gambia’s tourism  sector because a Gambia face in Nollywood will without doubt project the country’s image in a favourable way," he lamented.

CEO Wilcox revealed that, the visits will also give chance to the Nigerian film maestrous the  opportunity to say "Thank you" to their fans for the patronage and loyality for the past years.

Meanwhile, Francis Duru will spend three days in The Gambia during which he is expected to meet the Secretary of State for Tourism, Nigerian High Commissioner and the Nigerian community residing in The country. However, he will hold seminar with Gambian artists as well.

The CEO of Trade Plus under whom the Nigerian will make their first public appearance in The Gambia, said it’s overwhelmingly significant for the people to exchange culture, which will bring forth the ripple effects of an expanded economy.

"Our efforts is just one way of promoting cultural exchanges which will in turn enhance the tourism sector. I think The Gambia economy is doing well and the best thing is to supplemen and complement efforts in sustaining that economic growth," he said.

Banned film 'The Profit' appears on Web

Monday, March 24, 2008

Copies of The Profit, a 2001 film blocked from distribution in the United States due to a court injunction won by the Church of Scientology, appeared on the Internet Friday on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on the video sharing site YouTube.

Directed by former film executive Peter N. Alexander, movie critics have characterized The Profit as a parody of Scientology and of its founder L. Ron Hubbard. Alexander was a Scientologist for twenty years, and left the organization in 1997. The film was funded by Bob Minton, a former critic of Scientology who later signed an agreement with the Church of Scientology and has attempted to stop distribution of the film. Alexander has stated that the movie is based on his research into cults, and when asked by the St. Petersburg Times about parallels to Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard said: "I'll let you draw that conclusion ... I say it's entirely fictional."

The film was released in August 2001, and was shown at a movie theatre in Clearwater, Florida and at a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A Scientology spokesman gave a statement at the time saying "the movie is fiction and has nothing to do with Scientology", however the Church of Scientology later took legal action in an attempt to stop further distribution of the film. The Church of Scientology claimed that the film was intended to influence the jury pool in the wrongful death case of Scientology Lisa McPherson, who died under Scientology care in Clearwater, Florida.

In April 2002, a Pinellas County, Florida judge issued a court order enjoining The Profit from worldwide distribution for an indefinite period. According to the original court injunction received by Wikinews, the movie was originally banned because the court found that it could be seen as a parody of Scientology. "...an average person viewing the film entitled The Profit could perceive that it is a parody of the Church of Scientology," stated Robert E. Beach Senior Circuit Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pinellas County, Florida in his ruling on the injunction on April 20, 2002.

"To the extent that any person considered as a potential juror in evaluating any issues involving the Church of Scientology, the process of voir dire provides a fair and complete remedy to eliminate any potential juror that may possibly have been influenced to be less than fair and impartial," added Beach.

Luke Lirot, the attorney for the film's production company, announced on the film's website on April 7, 2007 that "We have absolutely no exposure for any repercussions from the court order," but that the film was still blocked from distribution due to an ongoing legal battle. Lirot wrote: "all that's stopping the release of the movie is the legal battle with the partner who was compromised by Scientology (Robert Minton) and is currently using his power as partner to stop the release of the film."

In an October 2007 article, The Times described the film as "banned in the US because of a lawsuit taken out against it by The Church of Scientology," and Russ Kick's The Disinformation Book of Lists included the film in his "List of 16 Movies Banned in the U.S.". An 8-minute teaser segment from The Profit appeared on the film's website and on the video sharing site YouTube in February 2008, and an attorney representing Bob Minton sent a letter to Luke Lirot requesting that the film clip be taken down. In a response letter, Lirot wrote that "Rather than damage any asset of the LLC, the short clip merely keeps the film in the public eye, and in a positive way."

On Friday, copies of the film began to circulate on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on YouTube. A link related to the film's appearance on the Internet on the community-based link aggregator website Digg.com had 3,546 "Diggs" - and hit the front page of the site's Entertainment section on Saturday.

On Saturday, Scientology critic and Emmy award-winning journalist Mark Bunker put a streaming version of the film on his website, www.xenutv.com, and encouraged others to watch and discuss the film on a real-time chat channel. In a video posting to YouTube Saturday, Bunker said "I did not do it. I had nothing to do with it ... I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I'm happy it's out there ... people are finally having a chance to see it. A lot of people have been curious over the years and there's been a lot of interest in seeing the film, so finally you can."

On the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, a poster by the username "Alexia Death" commented on the film's appearance on the Internet in the context of censorship: "It is out! And so it is a WIN if many people review it even if they say it SUCKS! :) Being bad is no cause to allow censorship :) And being censored is no cause to assume its good:)" A post to the blog "Blogsreel" commented: "We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it."

Blog postings have attributed the film's appearance on the Internet as part of the anti-Scientology movement Project Chanology organized by the Internet-based group Anonymous, but this has not been confirmed. Wikinews previously reported on international protests against Scientology which took place as part of Project Chanology on February 10 and March 15. A third international protest by Anonymous is scheduled for April 12. Titled "Operation Reconnect", the third international protest will focus on highlighting Scientology's practice of disconnection.

A new film prize at the 2008 Zanzibar International Film Festival for films relating to development policy issues

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH, in cooperation with the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) and Southern Africa Communications for Development (SACOD) will be awarding the Ousmane Sembène Films for Development Award for the first time in 2008. The prize will be awarded to a film that takes a particular look at topics of development cooperation. It carries prize money of US $5,000 and is designed to help the winner in his or her future film-making career. The Festival will be held in Zanzibar/Tanzania from 11–20 July 2008.

The focus of the film selection in 2008 will be on HIV/AIDS, with topics such as gender, the environment and ecology, education and poverty following in the years to come. “HIV/AIDS poses a threat to people and societies throughout the world, particularly in the large majority of African countries, which are home to two-thirds of all people living with HIV. Future development in the countries of Africa depends to a large extent on whether the societies particularly hard hit by HIV manage to cope with this pandemic. That’s why we’re focusing on HIV/AIDS in the first year of the prize,” said Thomas Kirsch-Woik, GTZ expert on HIV/AIDS.

On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), amongst others, GTZ is shaping the German contribution to the global AIDS response and is developing further approaches in the fields of HIV/AIDS prevention. GTZ is also steering the German input to the European hospital-twinning  Alliance ESTHER, the aim of which is to improve access to high quality treatment, care and prevention of HIV and AIDS in developing countries. Moreover, GTZ is further developing promising approaches to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV in Kenia and Tanzania .

As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development-policy objectives. It provides viable, forwardlooking solutions for political, economic, ecological and social development in a globalised world. Working under difficult conditions, GTZ promotes complex reforms and change processes. Its corporate objective is to improve people’s living conditions on a sustainable basis.

Nigerian Movie Practitioners to Help Actors

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Two members of the Association of Movie Practitioners Nigeria have arrived in the Gambia to enhance the capacity of this nations actors. They will also shoot a film about the slave trade during their visit.

Mezeako Chigozie,mo the Executive Director and Oraka Patrick, his Secretary General, arrived a few days ago to train Gambians in movie production.

Chigozie said they came to The Gambia to help because of the huge number of requests they have received to do so. He says Nigerian films are popular in The Gambia and, as a result, they are very well known here.

“We have brought a script on the slave trade which when made will attract international attention,” he said. He emphasised their eagerness to have a strong Gambian involvement in the project along with contributions from Portuguese Europeans and nationals from other African Nations.

He pointed out that Nigerian films always feature in film festivals but if Gambians are involved their names will also appear. “We are ready to help young people and we have all it takes to make it work,” Chigozie told The Point.

He said that the project will help create employment for young people because acting and filmmaking is a profession. It will, according to him, lift the country’s name and create employment for Gambian young people along the way. He says, in showing the youth of the nation how movies are made their appreciation of the art form will increase.

“We have some groups practicing and we shall meet the heads to tell them about our mission and teach.

Chigozie went on to say, “They shall inform them, train them, have auditions and then we select those suitable to shoot the movie on the slave trade. It is meant to help the youth of the country.”

Godwin Adole, the Artistic Director, said this is the time to become and artist. He said interested youths should go to their office at Tranquility Residence at Brusubi or call 9925760 or Matty Jobe on 7062948.

They intend to visit SoS for information and all media houses. Plans are underway to bring Patience (Mama G) Aki and Paw Paw along with other stars to come and perform in The Gambia.

Grammy Awards

Sunday, April 29, 2007
Grammy Awards are the Oscars of the music industry. The music industry launched its own awards thirty years after the Academy Awards were established. The Grammys, the Gramophone Awards--as originally named, were created in 1957 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

The Grammys were conservative. At that time, rock and roll was not included in the nominations, since it was considered a fad. Although the committee consisted of representatives from pop, jazz, classical, R&B, country etc, most innovators never won any awards for years to come.

The first Grammy Awards were presented for the year 1958, on May 4, 1959. Although Elvis Presley’s records were half of the music sold that year, The King wasn’t even nominated.

It is said that Frank Sinatra, the chairman of the board, had a hand in this, since he did not appreciate Rock’n Roll, and in the second year, when Bobby Darin was granted the Record of The Year Award for 1959 for “Mack the Knife,” Sinatra despised the new music even more. During the later years, however, Sinatra recorded the same song.

The end of the sixties still stayed conservative, although with Woodstock and with the push for following along with the times, the middle-of-the-road choices started to take hold. In 1969, the group 5th Dimension proved to be a godsend with their soft jazzy rock music, winning two awards for the same song, “Aquarius--Let the Sunshine in.”

The traditionalist view lost its hold during the seventies when the Grammys relaxed the strict judging criteria and included the rock music artists like the Eagles and Stevie Wonder.

A slap in the face came to Grammys with their biggest scandal when the Best New Artist Award was given to Milli Vanilli. Milli Vanilli were a twosome who had three singles at the number one spot. It was later discovered that the two never sang any of their songs, but lip-synched. Their German producer said afterwards, “We made a pact with the devil.”

The Grammys were broadcast on television for the first time by ABC until CBS bought the rights of telecast in 1973. The Grammys were held in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium for several years and then moved to the Staples Center because of the increase in the size of the audience and the categories. For years, New York and Los Angeles have competed for hosting the Grammys.

The Grammys now boast 108 categories with more than 20 genres of music and chapters in Atlanta, Chicago, Florida, Los Angeles, Memphis, Nashville, New York, Pacific Northwest, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Texas, and Washington, D.C. The 49th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony took place on February 11, 2007 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California with Dixie Chicks becoming the big winners.

In 2008, Grammy Awards will celebrate its fiftieth year, a milestone in the music awards business and will be held on a date to be yet announced at Staples Center, Los Angeles, California.

Make Music - The Digital Way

Friday, April 27, 2007
Even a few years ago when the recording technology underwent a metamorphosis people all over the world sang out praises for the growing convenience with which music was being produced. Following the digital boom however the scene has undergone a further development. No longer do you need to queue up in front of a studio to get your little track recorded. No longer do you need to coax your parents to lend you the money for the hi-tech studio equipment you would need to turn your practice pad into a swanky recording patch. And it's all because of the wonder box we have all come to know and love as the Personal Computer.

Thanks to the PC you can now not just record but also edit your own musical creations right in the comfort of your own home. All you need for the process is a proper 'music production software' (not exactly a rare breed and available easily on a number of free download sites on the net) and some great hardware.

If your budget is permissive get yourself a proper software package for as little as a few hundred dollars. Also, acquire a good, professional-quality audio interface (which will set you back by about $100 but no more) and get your own virtual recording studio right in your garage! If the large variety of recording software's available in the market appears a tad bit bewildering relax, play safe and go for the best. Cubase, ProTools, Sonar, Sound Forge etc. are some of the names to reckon with in this field.

Once your track is recorded, mixed and edited, get ready for the final step of your quest - distribution. Simply upload your track on to the net. A number of sites and P2P operations allow you to upload files so take full advantage of this opportunity and show the world what you are really made of.

Once the uploading has been done use community sites such as Orkut or Facebook to advertise your creation amongst friends and others. While you are at it, encourage them to simply download music (the music being yours in this case, and the downloading being completely legal for a change).

Who knows quite how the recording industry will be affected by this recent trend. But whether it crumbles or manages to survive and flourish, you will definitely earn your own name amidst all the action. And for all you know maybe the guy next door will be humming your song while in the shower very soon!

Top 10 Must-See Broadway Plays and Musicals

Friday, April 27, 2007
To see a Broadway play or musical is to step into a world that envelops you with an experience you cannot find anywhere else. Theatre has been around since ancient times and for good reason. There is absolutely nothing like watching the actors, hearing the live musical scores and going on a journey with fellow theatre-goers. It makes movies seem like flimsy comic books in comparison.

Fortunately, there are many excellent shows on Broadway and in major cities across North America today. The following list is the top ten plays you might consider attending with a date or a friend. Each one of these delivers an experience you won't soon forget.

One of the most popular mega-hits of Broadway is Wicked. Wicked is a musical taking the witches from the Wizard of Oz and recasting them to reverse the loyalties the audience feels in the movie. The play follows the women from school to their eventual fates. The emerald skinned Elphaba, studious and misunderstood, and the beautiful and ambitious Glinda, as they move from unlikely friends to the classic opponents of the movie. The magic lies in the witty recasting of the backstory of the Wizard of Oz, to challenge assumptions and present a tale of friendship and love. And now Wicked is touring the U.S., so there's a good chance it's showing in a city near you.

A relatively new show called Tarzan, is a musical about a baby raised by gorillas as he encounters humans, and Jane, forcing him to choose between his two heritages. Tarzan is very popular, with many theatergoers looking forward to seeing the Disney version brought to stage. A show for all ages, the search for where one belongs in the world is a weighty subject for such a deceptively light show. Phil Collins extended his musical score from the Disney movie into a complete theatrical score.

The Lion King is a musical about Simba the lion cub and his journey to adulthood and acceptance as King. A play for all ages, the story of a youth growing to accept responsibility and duty is one of the most enduring themes in fiction. The animal puppetry is nothing less than brilliant. If you're looking to instill a little culture in your child, this may be just the ticket. And again, The Lion King is showing in many cities.

A disfigured musical genius haunts a theatre and exerts a mysterious control over a young singer. The Phantom of the Opera is a modern classic musical, long-standing show and one of the most well known Broadway plays of the era. The classic music of the show is one of the main draws, with more than one piece from this show recognizable to almost any adult. This is the longest running play in Broadway history, and made Andrew Lloyd Webber a household name. Phantom of the Opera has played in 22 countries, 113 cities and to a combined audience of 10 million.

Les Miserables is a musical based on the classic novel of the same name, in which the obsessed policeman Javert pursues the prison escapee Jean Valjean over decades in Revolutionary France. A classic tale of obsession and redemption, this play investigates the big questions like right and wrong, vengeance and justice, and what it takes to achieve redemption, while putting a human face on the issues. Les Miserable originally ran on Broadway for sixteen years, and is back with a fresh cast to renew the magic.

Spamalot is based on the legendary Monty Python and the Holy Grail, featuring King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table as they face such dangers as the dreaded bunny rabbit. The occasionally eccentric Monty Python sense of humor is in full fury in this tale, with jabs at politics, religion, chivalry, bravery, intelligence and the French. There are limbless knights, men in tights and a chorus line of dancing divas. Spamalot is a favorite of audiences and critics alike, and won the 2005 Tony for Best Musical. If you liked the Monty Python's TV show and movies, then this musical will sure to please.

Chicago the Musical is another famous musical, in this case about a murder trial. The Fosse choreography is iconic. While the music isn't as iconic as some others, the odds are that most will recognize several pieces they've heard before, such as "Razzle-Dazzle" and "All that Jazz." Chicago returns us to the time of Vaudeville, satirizes the justice system and shows us what great theater is all about. Definitely check this show out of you liked the movie starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere.

Rags to rock to riches, Jersey Boys is the musical story of four blue-collar boys who become the Four Tops. It follows them from their start in the Hood to their apotheosis as one of the greatest music groups of all time, with emphasis on the characters involved. This show has really taken off and become unexpectedly popular on Broadway. Now the Jersey Boys is touring America.

Mamma Mia! is a musical built around Abba staples of the seventies, dealing with a single mother whose daughter is about to get married on a Greek island. The daughter invites three of her mother's old boyfriends to visit, hoping to find out which one her father is. The play is built around Abba music, but is an engaging story in its own right and is advanced by the music rather than providing an excuse for it. This is a play where almost everyone attending knows the music.

Rent is a musical that explores poverty, disease, and drugs in New York City. It's a modern rock version of the 19th century Italian opera "La Boheme," and is set in New York City's East Village. It is a moving musical where young people strive to make it in a difficult world.

Plays are one of the most enduring human entertainments, and Broadway is the big leagues in an art form thousands of years old. Plays speak of where we come from, where we are, and where we would like to be. If you want to do something different and you value culture, entertainment and enlightenment, going to a Broadway play is something you may want to experience soon.
