Bonu Johnson linked with Ports Authority job

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

According to Foroyaa Sports, eight coaches (among them former Under-20 coach, Peter Bonu Johnson) have applied for the managerial position of the Gambia Ports Authority FC that is currently occupied by caretaker coach, Faraba Fofana.

Fofana took over the post mid-way during last season’s campaign shortly after the dismissal of coach Ebrima Cham.

As the club prepares to taste life in the second tier of Gambian football next season, appointing a seasoned coach remains a top priority and Peter Bonu, according to reports, remains the favourite to capture the seemingly hot seat.

Sources have it that Coach Johnson, who earlier this year resigned as assistant coach to Gambia Scorpions, was on the verge of landing a two-year deal with the Ferry Boys but the club search team’s failure to meet his demand rocked the negotiation.

“He was offered a lucrative [deal] but he asked for more which seemed high for management. If no breakthrough is [made], an alternative coach or Faraba (the current coach) will continue with the team,” the highly placed sources told Foroyaa Sports.

Other applicants for the job include current Gamtel boss Alhagie Sillah, Ebrima Manneh of relegated Interior FC, Kebba Ceesay, vice-chairman of the GFA technical committee, and Sira Ndoye, former Real de Banjul coach amongst others.

Tallinding join Brikama in GFA First Division League

Monday, August 11, 2008
Tallinding United have joined Brikama United in the GFA Division One League after a much-needed 1-0 win against Flaminins  over the weekend.

Tallinding went into the game knowing fully that anything less than the maximum points could dent their promotion hope should close contenders, Ham Ham, win their encounter against Serrekunda East United on Saturday.

However, with Tallinding side garnering the desired result against Flaminins, who have now joined embattled Star Light in the relegation to the Third Division, Ham Ham’s emphatic 3-0 win against SK East United was reduced to a mere win in the final match of the season.

In another final tie on Saturday, Young Africans salvaged a 1-1 draw against Nema United to maintain their status in the Second Division.

Division One returnees, Tallinding United and first-timers Brikama United will, come next season, replace relegated Interior FC and Gambia Ports Authority in the top flight.

Tigers are SK West Super Cup champions

Monday, August 11, 2008
Two goals from Real De Banjul's Babucarr Badjan, one in each half, earned  Knock Out Cup Champions Tigers of Kotu Quarry their first ever Super Cup championship against League Cup winners, Kanifing United, at Serrekunda West on Saturday.

The game, which was the first assignment of Coach Sang Ndong-led interim sports committee, saw hundreds of football fans standing in all four corners of the SK West Mini Stadium.

Babucarr Badjan, the subsequent hero of the day, squandered a golden chance just ten minutes into the game when he fired blank a shot from strike partner Saikou Gibba. As if all was not lost, Badjan made amends few minutes later by blasting a right-footed shot from the corner to register his first goal in 15th minute. The Tigers frenzied fans went wild by invading the pitch and jubilating their lead.

Kanifing United, who were always Tigers threat as they defeated them in all previous encounters in the past years, were no match to their opponents this time around as their creativity and goal chances were nullified at every move they make by defenders

Timothy Colley, Baboucar Manga, Alagie Jatta and abdou Ceesay thus adding frustration on the faces of strikers Wadan Chune, Azziz Mendy and James Mballo. Kanifing did all they could to change the tide by introducing Baba Conteh, Muhamad Tunkara, Ali Ceesay, Hali Njie for Ansumana Sanneh, Sulayman Camara, Sheriff Jobe and Denilson Dafaris but to no avail.

Badjan brought more woes to the Kanifing United side by dribbling pass all his markers and taking a low shot midway into the game for his second thus ushering his team's chance for their first ever Super Cup.

Kanifing United struggled to pull one back to console themselves but the chanting and shouting from the Tigers fans only rendered them powerless and  made them resign to fate by succumbing to their opponents.

Kanifing United went home with four thousand dalasis  as runners up while Tigers proudly lifted the coveted giant trophy plus seven thousand dalasi as champions.

Saturday’s final was graced by  the GFA President, Seedy Kinteh, who took the kick-off, community leaders among other distinguished  persons.

Brikama Utd gain promotion to GFA First Division League

Thursday, August 07, 2008
Brikama United beat Nema United 2-1 on Tuesday, to gain promotion to the GFA First Division League.

Brikama United’s Alagie Bah headed in an opener in the first fifteen minutes of the game through Modou Susso's pass. Nema United almost dashed Brikama's hopes of qualifying when Abdoulie Bah capitalised on the opponents’ defensive blunder with a ballistic shot for an equaliser in the 53rd minute.

Brikama's new entrants Modou Sowe and Ebou Cole brought tears of joy and sorrow on the faces of Brikama and Nema fans respectively when the former fired in a rebound from the latter's shot saved by Nema's goalie Saikou Sonko in the dying minutes of the game.

With 32 points and one more match remaining against another fellow Western Region side Jambanjelly, who are relegation threatened, Brikama are looking forward to the First Division with hope of staying in the league and clinching trophies after their first season.

The day would ever remain in the heart and mind of sports enthusiasts in Brikama and Western Region in particular, as it marks the first qualification of a team from Western Region, to the GFA Division One League since the establishment of The Gambia Football Association in 1952.

Out Law Boys win Lamin Manneh memorial tourney

Tuesday, July 29, 2008
The Late Lamin Manneh Memorial Tournament sponsored by Jean and Biram Manneh ended on Sunday at Lamin Village with Out Law Boyz out-clashing Bakau Youths by 2 goals to nil.

Jim Hadim nodded in the opener midway into the game after receiving a cross from team mate Ramis Colley and beating pass his maker by header the ball in between the open hands of Bakau Youths goalkeeper Yaya Sidibeh.

The Bakau Youths were not to be cowed by the goal and noise emanating from the crowd of the Lamin Out Law Boyz supporters as they surged forward for an equaliser on numerous occasions only for defender Pa Alieu Mboge to quell every attack of theirs.

As tension was mounting from the attacks and counter attacks by both teams, tempers flared up only for 18 players to remain in the game at the end of the last whistle, after both teams lost two players due to unsporting behaviour with the always smiling referee Noah Manneh stamping his authority at each given time.

Barely five minutes to the end of the game, the provider of the first goal, Ramis Colley, blasted in a left-footed cracker to bring the curtain down and earn his team the much-needed victory in the first ever Lamin Manneh Memorial Tournament which the organisers vow to hold annually.

The Late Lamin Manneh who was the bread winner after the death of his father in October last year was in his mid twenties before he met  his untimely death in a tragic car accident along the Coastal Road on May 22, 2008.

He was the son of the late Dodou Manneh and Sirreh Bojang, sister to the GFA secretary general Jammeh EK Bojang who was one of the dignitaries to grace the occasion. Jean Manneh, who organised the event, thanked all those who contributed in one way or the other to make the tournament a success. She extolled the unflinching support of his brother in the UK, David Trylen, who sponsored the Trophy and Medals as well as Yaya Manneh, who co-ordinated the whole tournament.

“We Didn’t Deserve to Win” - Hawks Coach

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Following his team’s uninspiring performance against Wallidan, the newly-crowned 2007/08 GFA league champions, the head coach of the Red Devils of Hawks, Sang Ndong, has told reporters that his side didn’t deserve to win in their match against Wallidan on Sunday 13th July 2008.

Coach Ndong told reporters, “ as I said before it would not be an easy game, and we lost to a far better team.”  He stated that football is always decided on the day; performance depends on the mood and the advance preparation of your team. He went on, “we were very prepared but unfortunately things didn’t work for our side and everything worked on Wallidan’s;  we have to congratulate them for a well-deserved victory. They played extremely well and won.”

In his reaction to the team’s victory the head coach of Wallidan, Foday Bah, said that he was very happy because for the past 2 years they have not been able to take the league despite all efforts and high expectations. He added, “ we were well prepared for the game against Hawks because we know how they play and how they think, so we worked very hard for the past weeks for our game against Hawks, and the players applied everything that I told them, and that’s why we achieved this victory. “ The Hawks defence are very confident and I told my players about it that we have to put pressure on them and that’s what brought our two goals,” he said.

Coach Foday said that the team would be well prepared  for the championship, emphasizing, “ football now is a business and we have very young talented players who want to attain professional status and are willing to deliver,” he stated.

GFA Sham Ticket Dealer Sentenced

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Akinrinola Akintoye, a Nigerian national, was yesterday convicted by the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court for printing false documents thereby flouting section 324 of the criminal code. He had pleaded guilty to the offence.

The less blunt Nigerian, while docked before Principal Magistrate Buba Jawo, was sentenced to a fine of D15,000 in default to serve 18 months in prison.

According to the details of the case, Mr. Akintoye received the wrath of the law for printing dubious documents (tickets) during The Gambia and Senegal CAF qualifiers in Banjul in June 2008.

Before the passing of the sentence Lawyer Cuimel appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy as the convict is a first offender. He pleaded for the court to hand down a short sentence as since committing the offence the offender has served enough time to qualify as punishment.
