‘Rapist’ remanded

One Muhammed Bah, a Guinean national was, on Thursday, arraigned before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbake of the Kanifing Magistrates Court charged with rape, contrary to section 121 of the Criminal Code.

According to the particulars of the case, in the month of June, Muhammed Bah, in Ebo Town, unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a 16-year old girl (name withheld) without her consent.

Reacting to the charge preferred against him, Muhammed Bah pleaded not guilty. Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbake then ordered for him to be remanded in custody owing to the “gravity” of the case.

The case was adjourned to the 11th of September, 2008. Sergeant Touray represented the IGP.

Guinean National Admits Defiling A 13-Year-Old Girl

Muhammed Bah, a Guinea national, has admitted defiling a 13 year-old girl.

The man pleaded guilty yesterday 28th August 2008 on a charge of having carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16, but pleaded not guilty on a charge of unlawfully having carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl without her consent.

Mr Bah was arraigned at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Mbackeh, charged with two counts of unlawfully having carnal knowledge of an under-aged girl.

Count one indicates that some two months ago, Mr. Bah at Ebo Town in the Kanifing Municipal Council unlawfully had carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl (name withheld) without her consent.

Count two indicates that at the same time and place, Mr Bah had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16.

Meanwhile Magistrate Mbackeh ordered that the accused be remanded in custody, summarizing that cases of rape are becoming rampant. He also outlined that it is unlawful for men to force themselves on young girls.

The case continues on 11th September 2008 for full hearing.

‘Spy’ NABBED IN Kanilai

Inacoio Catanosa, a Guinean, was paraded at the Brikama Magistrates Court, charged with spying, which violates Section 37 of the criminal laws of The Gambia.

The prosecution stated that the accused allegedly committed the offence between June and July this year at Kanilai village, Foni Kansala District, where he was nabbed in the act of spying. But the accused has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

At that juncture, Police Prosecutor ASP Touray applied for an adjournment of the case, saying that the charge sheet would be sent to the AG’s Chambers for legal advice.

The magistrate also denied the accused person court bail and ordered for his remand at the State Central Prison, at Mile II until September 11, when the case will resume.

Guinean National Testifies

Augustus Biyofa, a Guinean national who is standing trial before the Central River Region travelling Magistrate Amadou Baldeh for attempted rape, has opened his defence.

In his testimony, Mr Biyofa told the court that on the day in question he met the girl and her father where he gave the girl D5.00 in commemoration of St Mary's. He added that while in his house, a woman knocked on his door and said that she heard people saying, "You wanted to have an affair with the little girl."

He said when he stepped out of his comopound, he met a police officer who said he was going to see the girl. He further stated that he proceeded to the police station to explain himself. He said at the police station the girl, her parents and himself were invited for questioning, adding that a cautionary and voluntary statement was obtained from him and subsequently he was arrested and remanded at athe Janjangbureh Prison.

The case was adjourned until 9th September 2008.

Man Arrested for Raping 17-year-old Girl

A man believed to be a Guinean national was last Saturday arrested in Latirkunda German, suspected of raping a 17-year old girl (name withheld).

Abdourahman Jallow is alleged to have persuaded the under-aged girl to accompany him to his friend’s house in Latirkunda German. On reaching there, he reportedly sent the friend to buy him something and, when thus left alone with the victim, he forced himself on her. 

The undesirable phenomenon of rape has in recent times become a menace, with uncomfortably too many incidents being reported time and again. 

Recently, in an interview with GRTS, President Jammeh vowed to set example on murderers and rapists. “We will not tolerate crime of whatever nature, more so violent crimes,” he stressed.

Meanwhile Abdourahman Jallow is in police custody, expected to be charged soon.

Alleged Perpetrator of Manslaughter Remanded

One Mustapha Marra, a Guinean national was Wednesday remanded at the Mile II State Central prison by the Bundung Magistrates’ Court for manslaughter.

According to the charge sheet, the accused Mustapha Marra on the 20th of September 2007 at Wellingara, unlawfully caused the death of one Abdou Ceesay by stabbing him  in the neck with a knife.

Meanwhile the court ordered for him to be remanded while making arrangements for the  provision of assistance a  legal counsel.

He is expected back in court on 29th July.

Guinean charged with manslaughter

Satafa Marra, a Guinean national was, on Wednesday, charged with manslaugter contrary to Section 186 of the Criminal Code, laws of The Gambia before Senior Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court.

According to the facts before the court, Satafa Marra on the 20th of December 2007, at Wellinghara, Kombo North, Western Region, did unlawfully cause the death of one Abdoulie Ceesay, by stabbing him with a knife on the neck.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Sillah-Camara in her ruling, stated that the court would write to the Master of the High Court to provide the accused, Satafa Marra, with legal aid. She then remanded the accused to the State Central Prison and adjourned the case to Tuesday 29 July 2008.

Man in Court for theft

One Amadou Boy Barry, a Guinean national, was recently arraigned before the Central River Region Travelling Magistrate Amadou Baldeh on a charge of stealing.

According to the charge, the accused was alleged to have stolen the sums f twenty-five thousand dalasis and CFA 300,000 from the home of one Abdlie. He denied the charge.

He is expected back in court soon.

Gambia-Guinea set to expand ties

On Wednesday, July 16,  President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh concluded a three-day state visit to Guinea-Conakry. During his stay in Conakry, the Gambian leader held extensive discussions with his Guinean counterpart. They seized the opportunity to review the principles guiding the bilateral relationship between Banjul and Conakry.

Prompted by their common desire to further strengthening their traditional friendship and cooperation, the visit saw the two countries renewing their commitment to strengnten the cooperation.  

Aware that the bilateral cooperation meets the long-term interests of the two peoples and desirous of promoting international peace and security, and determined to intentify the positive achievements recorded in bilateral relations, the two laeders reiterated in a joint communiqué, their strong will to expand ties.

According to the joint communiqué, the two sides affirmed that they will pursue the cooperation existing in the areas of fisheries (the 2002 agreement), water ressources, commerce, transport, civil service and tourism.

Agreement was not only reached on deepening the  Gambia-Guinea Conakry cooperation, but also to have a firm stand on international and regional issues of common interest.

In the sector of water ressources, the two sides agreed to work on a common programme within the framework of the OMVG. Consequently, they will promote the OMVG energy projects at the Kaléla and Samagouly dams.
 
At the regional level, the two countries resolutely decided to promote inter-regional commerce and re-affirmed their desire to encourage negociations within the ECOWAS Commission so as to reach a balanced agreement on the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

As a result, the Gambian side invited Guinea to participate in the forthcoming ECOWAS Banjul Inter-ministerial Meeting on EPAs.

8-year girl old ‘raped’

An 8-year old girl (name withheld) was reportedly raped at Kololi Village by a Guinean national, identified as Alasa Bah.

The suspect, 23, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara of the Bundung Magistrates Court, on Monday.

According to the prosecution, on 18th May, 2008, at Kololi Village, Kanifing Municipality, Alasa Bah allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the child.

Mr Bah pleaded not guilty when the charge sheet was read to him.

In her ruling, Senior Magistrate Sillah-Camara disclosed that the court will write to the master of the High Court to provide the accused person with legal aid.

She then ordered that the embattled Guinean be remanded at the State Central Prison, at Mile II, before adjourning the case to July 21, for continuation. Inspector Saine represented the IGP in the trial.
