The Jolly Riders, a charitable foundation in the UK yesterday give out over 300 bicycles and some books to three schools in the country. The beneficiaries are Kaur Upper Basic, Kaur Senior Secondary and Jimbara schools.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at Gunjur the Coordinator Mr. Babucarr Boye Touray said the foundation was founded in 2005 to help Gambian schools by providing children with bicycles  and education materials.

He revealed that so far over 22 schools have benefited from the charity. He advised the beneficiary schools to put the bike into good use. He promised their resolve in helping more schools across the country with bicycles.

The chairman of the board of Trustees Mr. Barry Wright advised the parents the parents and school authorities to ensure that the bicycles are put into good use. He also encouraged the students to be mindful when riding to and from school.

Senior Education Officer from the Department of State for Basic and Secondary Education described the donation as timely. He said that it will ease the mobility constrain of the students thus enabling them to reach school on time. He assured the Jolly Riders of his department’s support while acknowledging the donation.

Mr.Harry Badige principal Kartong Basic Cycle school gave the vote of thanks.

Members of the West African Development Organisation of Fisheries on Wednesday held a one-day meeting at Gunjur in Kombo South. The meeting was meant is part of the association’s efforts in contributing towards the development of fisheries sector in the sub region.

Participants at the meeting were drawn from almost all the countries of the West African sub region.

Addressing the meeting, Chairman of the association Mr. Charles Batalevita thanked their host for the warm welcome.

According to him, the aims and objectives of the association is to promote and develop small scale fishing projects in Africa and to ensure quality fishing as well as to create employment for youths. He noted that the association was formed by the 16 member states of the West Africa. 

Dely Lucieu, Director of the association, hails members of the Gunjur Community Fisheries project for maintaining the structure build by the Japanese government some five years ago. He encouraged them to continue working hard. For his part, Mr. Alieu Touray Chairman of Gunjur Community Fisheries Centre informed the meeting about his committee, which he said compose of 34 members and nine sub committee members. He revealed that the Centre is creating employment for many West African nationals.

The chief of the area Sheriff Ajay Janneh commended the West African Development Organisation of Fisheries for choosing The Gambia and Gunjur in particular to host the meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Dampha Assistant Director of Fisheries.

According to the particulars of the offence, on or about the 18th September 2008 at Gunjur village the Accused Yaya Drammeh threatened to kill one Omar Jallow with a knife.

Meanwhile he was remanded at the Mile 2 State central prison until the next adjourned date.

In a separate development one Ebrima Ndure of Brikama was also recently arraigned at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing, a charge he denied.

The alleged offence revealed that on or about 14th September 2008 at Brikama town the accused Ebrima Ndure stole a gas bottle head valued at D1500 being the property of one Samba Jallow.

The case was adjourned to 8th October 2008.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Gunjur Health Centre, the chairman of the Gunjur Village Development Committee, Mr. Abdou K Touray hailed the donors for what he called benevolent and timely gesture, adding that the donation will go a long way in improving the Health Centre.

Speaking on behalf of the donors, Sedia Touray, a friend of the donors urged the people of Gunjur to pray for the late nurse Mr. Sonko for improving the Health Centre. He expressed optimism that his friends will continue to give helping hand to the people of Gunjur whenever the need arises.

For her part, the Chief Nursing Officer, Gunjur Health Centre, Mrs Binta Saidy assured the donors that the items would be properly put into good use.

She commended Ada and Hennie Mulder for their tremendous contribution towards the improvement and development of Gunjur Health Centre.

Just recently Chief Janneh has ordered the arrest of not fewer than nine shopkeepers in the village of Gunjur for selling rice at an exorbitant price of D950 per bag. Addressing shopkeepers and others at his tribunal, the chief said he would not tolerate any sky rocketing prices in his district. “If you want to sell a bag at D950, then pack your shop and move to somewhere else because this district is not the best place for you,” he warned shopkeepers.

The district authority head, went further to said that his warning is not only limited to those in Gunjur but to shop keepers in all the villages in Kombo South.

In strong words chief Janneh also didn’t spare the butchers and fishermen. He urged them to also consider reducing their prizes. “Why can’t we have mercy for each other and live in peace and harmony as the people of the same country?” he asked. We share everything in common with you. He told the shopkeepers, “I took an oath for this and I shall stand by it”.

Speaking to Pointsports recently Mr. Buba Bojang alias Bada, chairman of Gunjur Sports Development Association, stressed the importance of the web-site adding that, “it will facilitate readers from different areas to know the situation on the ground as far as Gunjur sports is concerned.”

In his part Alieu Jabang alias Morinho, head coach of NAS FC who spoke on behalf of his fellow coaches thanked the sports Committee for acquisition of the web site they created and called on all teams to co-operate in maintaining the web site in a very efficient and cordial manner.

Mr Lamin Darboe, alias ‘aka’, a man with a long record of music promotion in The Gambia is wasting no time in promoting music in the country. Mr Darboe is a native of coastal village of Gunjur Kombo South.

Briefing Entertainment at his studio in Gunjur, Janneh Kafo Radio Station, Mr Darboe highlighted his past activities in music promotion in The Gambia and the world at large. “It has always been my dream to be part of the music industry in my life. I started promoting music with our experienced talented artist Jaliba Kuyateh, Ifambondi who were then called Eagles Jazz Band. I worked very hard to make sure that these talented artists are not discouraged,” he added. According to him, “I was among the first Gambians to bring outside musicians to play live concert in The Gambia and to share their talented experience with our young Gambian artists.” The music promoter travelled to so many countries in the world to promote music, especially African music.

Mr Darboe, who stands for justice, expressed his happiness on the boosting popularity of young Gambian musicians. He appealed to them to be very courageous and mannerly.

Confirmed reports reaching The Point reveal that the Alkalo of Gunjur in Kombo South, Western Region, Alhagie Sabaki Touray, has been removed from his position with effect from last Monday.

According to reports, Alhagie Sabaki Touray, who has served in his position for over a decade, was removed on grounds of advancing years and potential incapability of discharging the functions of his office efficiently. Reports also have it that his removal was due to his lack of affiliation to any Kabilo (ward) in his own village and therefore he cannot lead the people as Alkalo of Gunjur.

Meanwhile, he is said to have been replaced by Alhagie Sulayman Touray, the current chairman of the Gunjur Village Elders Counci

As part of efforts to increase the growing participation of young people in the game of football, the Gunjur Junior Nawettan Organising Committee have taken a bold step by  staging a major competition for the junior category.

The 2008 edition of the championship, sponsored by Basiru Ndong, which kicked off recently has reached knockout stages.

In the matches played so far, Juventus lost to World 11 4-3 on penalties after both teams played out a goaless draw.

Oxford and Manchester United encounter ended 1-0. Gambega defeated Sebandinto  1-0, Passamai   surprise Jannehkoto 1-0. Medina Kunkuding squeezed a 2-0 win over Kulkochi FC.

In the upcoming weekend matches, AC Milan will take on Asaleme on Friday. Saturday’s encounter will feature Jujuba United and GLC FC. Arsenal will battle it out will Young Chelsea on Sunday.

Born in 1993 in Gunjur, Pa Jammeh started playing football at the Gunjur Junior Nawettan Championship with a team called Manchester United in 2004 and won the league title the same year.

His talents and skills attracted late Pa Jobe FC in 2007 and he played for the team at senior Nawettan level. While at the team, they won both league and super cups. He is currently the team captain of the club.

He earned himself a place in the Gunjur U-17 team selection tournament geared towards the selection of the Gambia U-17 team and succeeded in impressing U17 Coach Tarik Siagy.

Unfortunately, he could not made it pass the first stages of the final selection of the present Gambia U-17 team. But delighted Pa Jammeh, who was very content with being selected for the first stages  despite not making it, stated that he will be  ready for fresh challenges  this time around.

He commended teammates, Coach Hatab Jobe, Committee member in Gunjur and brother, Bakary Jammeh for their unflinching support and wonderful work.
