Under-20 Defeat Gunjur Zonal By Narrowest of Margins

The Gambia U-20 team, in a preparatory match in advance of the Wafu Tournament in Nigeria, played a friendly match with Gungur selected Zonal Team at the Independence Stadium at Bakau last Monday.

The match, which was played in order to help the U-20’s improve on their weaknesses and as a result bolster the team’s spirit for the high standard performance at the competition in Nigeria.

The game produced some spectacular performances from both teams, in the sense that; the ball was moved neatly with some cross cutting passes from all parts of the pitch.

The only goal of the match came in the 49th minute of the game and was scored by the prolific striker of the U-20 team Alsanna Camara.

Speaking to Pointsports shortly after the match, the Assistant Coach of the U-20’s, Pa Suwareh Faye, expressed his impressions of the performances put up by both teams and assured Gambians that the boys will do their best to raise our flag in Nigeria.

Mr Lamin Jabang, head Coach of Gunjur Zonal Team, said that his boys are preparing well for the coming Zonals renamed Babe Muhammad Perceptual Tournament.

Farato Clinch Kombo South Tournament

As all Nawettan’s heat up towards the peak of the season Farato F.C last week joined the fray of those teams who emerged as champions of their respective leagues. The Kombo South District Football Tournament, which was sponsored by Gamcel, played its final, on Saturday 15th November 2008, between the victors Farato F.C and Kartong at Gunjur Football Field.

The keenly contested final, which drew hundreds of spectators from Kombo South and its environs, ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. As a result the game proceeded to a penalty shootout which ended 3-2 in favour of Farato.

As champions Farato received a giant trophy and cash prize of D3,500, while Kartong went home with D2,500 as the runner up prize.

Following inauguration of New Alkalo in Gunjur

In what could be viewed as his strongest address since assuming office, Mr. Lamin Sanneh, the Governor of Western Region, has warned that no person, group or whatever will be allowed to jeopardise the peace within his region by not accepting decisions taken by the authorities.

Governor Sanneh’s comments came in the wake of a long-standing perplexity as to who is the current Alkalo of Gunjur in Kombo South, Western Region. This follows the removal of Alkalo Sabaki Touray on reported health grounds and the subsequent appointment of Alkalo Sulayman Touray.

Addressing thousands of people at the official inauguration of the new Alkalo of Gunjur Sulayman on Friday, Governor Sanneh said anyone who do not recognise the appointment of the new Alkalo will face the full force of the law.

“The community needs peace, understanding and unity in order to develop. No person, group or whatever will be allowed to jeopardise the peace that we continue to enjoy,” he warned.

According to Governor Sanneh, the Village Development Committee must put their house in order or else it will be destroyed as stated in the Local Government Act. He called on the youths to join hands together for the development rather than to oppose each other, which he added, will bring them nothing but hatred and backwardness.

Governor Sanneh’s variegated address did not spare the seemingly numerous and unending land disputes in his region, saying that anybody caught in what he described as an unscrupulous act will be dealt with accordingly.

He further went on to caution tax evaders to pay their taxes, sighting as an example, the new settlers within the Western Region.

Also speaking on the occasion, Hon. Ismaila Sambou, Secretary of State for Local Government, lands and Religious affairs, called on the youths to rally behind the elders for the development of not only the village but also the village.

According to Secy. Sambou, without the blessings of the elders, everything that one, especially youths, achieves in his life is meaningless. “I was aware that there was some bitter arguments between the youths and the elders of this village, but enough is enough now,” he said. In conclusion he stated that for the village to progress, they should all rally behind the new Alkalo and the current Village Development Committee.

Gamcel F.C Through to the Final in Gunjur Nawettan

As Nawettan football intensifies in all spheres of The Gambia, in Gunjur Gamcel F.C recently booked their place in the finals of the 2008 Gunjur

Nawettan League Championship by beating Oxford United 2-0.

The match, which ended two goals to zero in favour of Gamcel F.C, was keenly contested with a brilliant display of skills and talent and as such attracted a range of spectators from Gunjur and its environs. Yusupha Barrow and Alagie Joof scored the winning goals.

Cathy F.C also booked their ticket to the final, after beating Commit F.C by 2-1 in the second semi-final. Cathy F.C’s goals were scored by Buba Sanyang while Commit F.C’s lone goal was registered by Fansu Sanyang. The date of the final is expected to be announcing later.

New Gunjur Alkalo to be Inaugurated Sunday

This Sunday will see the official inauguration ceremony of the new Alkalo of Gunjur Village in Kombo South Alhagie Sulayman Touray, alias Parding Sulu.

Speaking to The Point, a senior member of the village elder’s council, Alhagie Sheikh Saibani Cham, said that the day will be an historic one because it will see great displays of customs and traditional systems. He said that the new Alkalo was the people’s choice as he had been persuaded by many of them to take the position. He further called on the people of the village to come out in large numbers to mark the occasion.

The new Alkalo asked the people to be calm and keep things to a low profile and to help and guide him in doing his job correctly.

Many people, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their readiness to grace the occasion and work with the new Alkalo for the good of the village and the nation at large.

Gunjurians Mourn the Death of Beryl McKenna Culson

The people of Gunjur are mourning the death of Mrs. Beryl McKenna Culson who was a dear friend to the village and passed away on the 8th of October this year.

Speaking to The Point, the host of Mrs. Culson, Mr. Kebba K. Barrow, alias KKB, said Mrs. Culson’s death was a source of great heartbreak to many people in the village. He said that Mrs. Culson first visited The Gambia in 1994 and following a visit to Gunjur decided to help and support the village.

She built a four-classroom block at GunjurLowerBasicSchool and furnished it fully with many materials. The block can accommodate over 200 children.

According to KKB, Mrs. Culson was like a mother, a sister and a friend to all Gambians and Gunjur in particular.

He thanked the family and the church of the late Mrs. Culson for their support and contribution to the development of Gunjur.

When contacted, a member of the parent/teacher association, Mr. Momodou Bojang, said he still could not believe his ears when he heard about the death of his friend Beryl McKenna Culson. He said that the people of his area remember her sweet charity every evening.

Malong Darboe, a prefect in GunjurUpperBasicSchool, said Mrs. Culson was like their grandmother during their days in the lower basic school. He applauded her for her generosity and prayed that her soul may rest in perfect peace. He also composed a poem to her memory entitled, “Thank You Beryl Mckenna Culson”.

Gunjur Nawettan Reaches Semi’s

The 2008 Gunjur, Western Union, sponsored Nawettan league organised by the Gunjur Youth Sports Development Association, will reach the semifinal stage this weekend, on Saturday 25th October 2008.

Gamcel FC will clash with Oxford United in the first semifinal on Sunday 26th October 2008 and Cathy FC will lock horns with Commit FC in the second semi. All matches will kick off at 4.30pm at the Gunjur football field.

New Gunjur VDC Presents Public Report

The newly formed Village Development Committee (VDC) of Gunjur has given out its first public report on its activities for the past six months.

Speaking at a village meeting held in the village over the weekend, Mr. Eliman Touray, Assistant Secretary General of the committee, said the committee, six months after taking over, has spent a total amount of D21, 526 in filling potholes within the streets of Gunjur. The money, he added, was collected from individuals.

For his part, Mr. Abdou K. Touray, chairman of the VDC, said his committee has proven beyond reasonable doubt that they are capable and deserved the opportunity to serve in their village development committee.

He said despite all the oppositions, the committee has and will continue to deliver beyond expectation. Mr. Touray called the youths to participate in development programmes for the progress of the village. He also called on Islamic scholars to always talk to the public about issues that will not take the development of the village forward.

Young Jannehkoto Crown Gunjur U-16 Champions

Young Jannehkoto FC were on Monday crowned champions of the 2008 Bekai sponsored Gunjur U-16 championship after defeating Black Panthers FC by 1-0 in a well contested game played at the Gunjur football field.

The match has been a show of youth talent and skills of play and has attracted a good number of spectators from Gunjur and its environs.

Young Jannehkoto lone goal was scored in the 66th minute by Buba Touray. Black Panthers fought back but they could not find the back of the net.

The winners went home with a giant trophy and a cash prize of D1, 000, whilst the runners-up went home with D700.00.

Meanwhile in another development, Gunjur zonal team has started training ahead of the forth-coming Gambia Football Association super cup nawettan tournament for the 2008 season.

As many as 42 players have been invited for training, out of which 22 players will be selected for the tournament.

Jolly Riders Donates Over 300 more Bicycles to Schools

The Jolly Riders, a charitable foundation in the UK yesterday give out over 300 bicycles and some books to three schools in the country. The beneficiaries are Kaur Upper Basic, Kaur Senior Secondary and Jimbara schools.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at Gunjur the Coordinator Mr. Babucarr Boye Touray said the foundation was founded in 2005 to help Gambian schools by providing children with bicycles and education materials.

He revealed that so far over 22 schools have benefited from the charity. He advised the beneficiary schools to put the bike into good use. He promised their resolve in helping more schools across the country with bicycles.

The chairman of the board of Trustees Mr. Barry Wright advised the parents the parents and school authorities to ensure that the bicycles are put into good use. He also encouraged the students to be mindful when riding to and from school.

Senior Education Officer from the Department of State for Basic and Secondary Education described the donation as timely. He said that it will ease the mobility constrain of the students thus enabling them to reach school on time. He assured the Jolly Riders of his department’s support while acknowledging the donation.

Mr.Harry Badige principal Kartong Basic Cycle school gave the vote of thanks.
