Speaking at the awards ceremony, held at the Police headquarters in Banjul yesterday, IGP Essa Badjie said the four men Momodou Turo Darboe, Hon. IGP Badjie made special reference to the building of Talinding police station that has made it possible to provide the necessary infrastructure to bring service to the doorstep of Talinding and its catchment areas. “ We are cognisant of the support you are rendering and continue to render to the operations of The Gambia Police Force,” he said. The Police boss further pointed out the support that the Kanifing Municipal Council renders to the Police during hard times. “The Gambia Police Force is indeed very grateful for all the good things you have done for us,” he stated. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 In recognition of their sustained and invaluable contribution to not only the media but the development of this great country, as well as their vision and mission for the country, the President has conferred national awards to these outstanding personalities as part of activities marking the 14thanniversary of the July 22ndrevolution. Regarded by many as the first of its kind in the history of The Gambia, the accolade is expected to earn these journalists in particular critical acclaim both in the country and beyond, thus keeping alive their spirit to work even harder for the development of the country. When contacted yesterday, all the personalities expressed their appreciation in receiving such honour, expressing their resolve to work even harder. For Mr. Pap Saine, the Managing Director of The Point, the executive recognition came as a big surprise to him when he heard the news. “I accept the National Award with great pleasure. It is a plus to my career and my paper. It is also a big challenge and recognition. “I will also redouble my efforts to meet the challenges. As journalists, we are watchdogs for the society and therefore partners in development. I would like to sincerely thank the President for honouring me while I also pray for the media fraternity.” Mr. Saine was however quick to point out that as pleased and as humbled as he is with the award, he would like to renew The Point’s well repeated appeal to the government to facilitate access to information to the independent media from government circles and, more importantly, rekindle the apparently forgotten investigation into the yet unresolved murder of his friend and colleague, late Deyda Hydara. Mr. Serign Faye, Director Radio and Television Programmes, GRTS, said that the news has brought him happiness as he felt highly honoured to be rewarded and decorated by His Excellency the President of the Republic. “It is not only an honour for me but to the whole management and staff of GRTS. Am seeing it as a challenge to redouble my efforts to serve my country to the best of my ability. I will try to live up to expectation.” In his reaction to the award, Mr. Swaebou Conateh, Publisher of the Gambia News and Report Magazine, expressed his appreciation for the award which, according to him, he has dedicated to the media fraternity in the country. “I express appreciation on my own behalf and on behalf of my fellow journalists and I hope that it will mean a further improvement in government-media relations.” For Mr. Kebba Dibba, Senior Manager Television Programmes, he is overwhelmed, noting that there is no greater honour than being made to feel that one’s job is appreciated. “In-as-much as it is a reward or award, it is also a challenge for me to know that where much is given, much is expected. This is the first of its kind for such a large number of journalists from both the public and private media are been awarded. In short, I think this will push me to further tighten my belt even stronger.” Read our subsequent issues for the full list of awardees. Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Gambia’s new coach, Belgian Paul Put, was yesterday handed keys to a brand new Hyundai Saloon car and the keys to a luxurious 3-room villa, situated at AU Village in the Brufut. The package is from the Gambian leader, Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, as his personal contribution to the signing of the European as Scorpion’s coach. Handing over the keys to the President of the Gambia Football Association, on behalf of President Jammeh, Major General Langtombong, the first vice-president of the GFA, who doubles as Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, said the national football governing body recently succeeded in hiring the services of a foreign coach for the Scorpions, adding that this was made possible thanks to the intervention of Africell who has offered to pay the coach’s salary. He said the GFA was eventually left with other constraint, which included the provision of accommodation and transport for the coach. “But being keenly interested in the development and promotion of Gambian football and the youths in general, our President did not hesitate to rescue the Gambia Football Association from the strained situation. “I am honoured to make a presentation of a house and a car to the coach, on behalf the Commander-In-Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces and Chief Patron of the Gambia Football Association, Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh. “The President has asked me to convey to you his warm congratulation on your appointment as Scorpions’ coach and also to tell you that you will always get his support,” revealed Major General Tamba, to a rather elated coach Paul Put. Receiving the keys, Seedy Kinteh, President of the Gambia Football Association, heaped praises on President Jammeh for his unfettered support towards the football association. He said the latest magnanimity from President Jammeh did not at all come as a surprise, since he had always been there for Gambian sports. He challenged coach Paul Put to reciprocate the benevolent gesture by qualifying Gambia to the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup finals. “Mr Paul Put you have a big challenge. You have seen what the President has just done and now the ball is in your court,” he said. “This luxury car and the building are given to you so that you will deliver the desired result. And I know with your vast experience, you can do it and we expect you to do it. Be assured that you will get the Football Association’s unswerved support.” Reacting to the gesture, the elated European admitted that the good treatment made him feel at home. He said such a package was hardly given to coaches in Africa, adding “I am very much grateful to the President and the Gambian people”. Coach Paul Put revealed that with all hands on deck the Gambia’s dream of qualifying for the 2010 finals will be released.
