Banutu College Ends Leadership Training

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Banutu Business College (BBC) is an institution that has a particular distinction in offering skilled trades to its pupils in the form of learning and discipline. The college recently ended a week-long for members of various security units, civil servants and the commercial industry on leadership quality at its campus in Lamin.

The theme of the training was appreciative enquiry.

According to the organisers, this opportunity will allow the participants make better use of the positive things available to them at the community level, institutional level and departmental level to help develop this country.

Mr. Micheal Banutu Gomez, president Banutu Business College, posited that the workshop was geared towards helping Gambians start to appreciate themselves, their culture and their environment. Mr. Gomez maintained that the training will create an opportunity for dialogue, partnership and effective team work which will foster accountability, dedication and more responsibility.

Mr Gomez maintained that this kind of training will also quell the negative stereotyping whereby certain things are attributed to particular groups of people for our social ills and instead look for positive solutions for better a Gambia.

For his part, the facilitator of the training Dr. Berhe Habte Giorg, a professor at Rowan University U.S.A, acknowledged the fact that working with people closely in order to implement strategies requires much time. He further stated that the workshop is to train agents of change. Dr Berhe added that the success of the training would be measured by how participants begin to transform what they learn into practice.

Women and youth of The Gambia

Wednesday, April 02, 2008
The long, eagerly awaited state opening of the National Assembly for the legislative year 2008 is now history. The marathon speech of the Chief Executive Officer of the Gambian constitution was pretty much enthralling in that, indeed, as expected, it touched on every sphere of Gambian life. The rather articulate nature of the postulates of his statement demonstrates how acquainted the leadership is with the needs of its citizens.

In a way, President Jammeh’s presentation was also suggestive of a total endorsement of the role of two special groups of people - the women and the youth - in this country’s development endeavors. We’d be right to say that this is a year dedicated to these two groups of people; that is, if the speech of His Excellency is anything to go by.

Gambians and the rest of the world have constantly wondered about the relationship between President Jammeh and women. Presumably, it is now clear as to the reason behind this seeming eternal bond. Indeed, one can only stand by those that stand by you. The President himself said it, that he was a grateful man. In other words, he would not ignore those that stand for him in favor of those that make no effort in giving him the helping hand he is rightfully entitled to from every Gambian in the development of this country.

It is no secret that the women folk dominate life in the Gambia today; be it in politics, agriculture, business, domestic work, and virtually everything. When HE call for assistance, they are always readily available. In effect, they appear to be more ready to stand for the country in its drive towards achieving its goals as enshrined in the United Nations millennium development goals and the Gambia’s own vision 2020 blue print.

It is indeed gratifying that their man, the Gambian leader, has acknowledged their effort. We have the pleasure to add our voice in congratulating you, the women and youth of the Gambia. We do hope, however, that this trend of your admirable participation in your country’s development will continue.

SoS Axi Gye visits NYSS

SoS Axi Gye visits NYSSSoS Axi Gye visits NYSS

Friday, March 07, 2008
As part of his tour of institutions under his purview, Alhaji Mass Axi Gye, SoS for Youth and Sports, accompanied by his Permanent Secretary, Mambanyick Njie, on Tuesday, March 4, visited the National Youth Service Scheme headquarters in Bakau.

In welcoming the Secretary of State and his entourage, Mr Musa Mbye, Executive Director of NYSS said that the Scheme was established in 1996 with a view  to provide the .youth with skills for self reliance.

"Since its inception, it has been taking young people between the ages of 17-30,  based on quotas for each of the six regions.  Corps members are first orientated to build self-esteem and leadership abilities and later exposed to various types of occupations from which they make their choices.  The NYSS then takes queue from there and attach them to existing training institutions for 22 months during which they receive tuition and living allowances", said Mbye.

The NYSS  boss did not hesitate to reveal that the scheme executes some of the training itself, namely horticulture at its farm, and tailoring/fashion design at its own training centers, adding that NYSS does not compromise standards and as such monitors the performance of the trainees to ensure that any corp member whose attendance drops below 85 per cent, is denied their monthly stipend.

He asserted that NYSS also introduced an apprenticeship program for 46 months in 2002, in which it trains Gambian youth who had no chance of attending formal school and also those who did not attain grade nine education.

Deploring on the rather small number of girls that enroll for NYSS training programmes, Mbye noted with pride that NYSS has trained over 1565 youth in 22 occupational fields of which boys constituteed 78 per cent and girls 22 per cent .

For his part, SoS Gye, noted that government values the empowerment of Gambian youth, thus the establishment of the scheme in 1996. He noted that if youth development programmes are anything to go by, The Gambia is well ahead of most countries in Africa.

He however hastened to note that the momentum should be maintained as there is no room for complacency. While challenging the NYSS management to maintain standards in its service delivery, he implored all to work hand-in-glove with the NYSS in order to ensure the empowerment of the youth.

"My office is open to all of you. All you need to do is to come to my office and we will discuss together and lay down strategies on the way forward for our Gambian youth", said SoS Gye.

The Secretary of State, also used the occasion to advice corps members to take up their training programme with  seriousness, adding that a colossal sum of money is being invested on them and that it was their responsibility to complement government efforts by excelling in their various fields of study.

A question for KMC and NEA

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

Even after the signing of the Anti-littering Bill by the president of the Republic and the ensuing national debate on the significance of such legislation, the pattern of deception by enemies of progress remains unabated.

As if the pictures we all saw together on GRTS about frustrated residents worried about their well-being in the face of a series of intruding, illegal dump sites were not enough to touch the soul of these callous saboteurs.

What on earth
will it take to do away with a destructive few bent on engaging on inclinations that threatens the peace of a majority? This question is for KMC and NEA.

It is near impossibility to come across a single element that disapproves the bill signed by the president. In fact, the bill is a reflection of the will of the people, as it is their elected representatives who passed it into legislation. One is compelled to wonder why, in the face of all the talking and promises made by KMC and its NEA counterpart, not a single prosecution has taken place (as far as we know!), yet there are loads of evidences of illegal dumping and littering.

Well, as to who has the mandate to prosecute an offender among the two, we can not quite tell. But we are abundantly certain that both NEA and any of the municipal or local council authorities are largely responsible to safeguard a law concerning the health of the people in their region. In other words, they can instigate the prosecution of an offender. And since in this case our focus is on KMC, the subjects are naturally the latter and NEA. This is why we want an explanation from them, as to why not a single prosecution has been done.

Through our Roving Lens, we have a lot of evidence for the inspector general of police about acts directly contradicting this very bill. We happen to have come across some contractor who claimed to have gotten what he referred to as a contractual agreement with KMC to fill in portholes on the roads. That sounds quite interesting, as all his worn-out equipments were dumped on the road, making it all the more inaccessible.

We have reiterated the need for collaboration among the entire populace to root out this irritating phenomenon, hence our resoluteness on the issue. You can imagine how we feel when we have seen all what had happened. It is within our power to help curb the situation.

We strongly accept, as we have indicated time and again, that the issue calls for urgent response and that in so doing we need strong and formidable leadership at all levels. In that regard, we harbor great admiration for the people of KMC for their choice of leadership. "Operation Clean the Municipality" is indeed quite timely.  Mayor Yankuba Colley and his team of wonderful men and women need to be commended for this laudable move.

We re-emphasise that we harbor not a grain of doubt that this exercise, if the mayor’s resolve continues to receive the support it needs, will bear fruit. However, there are one or two issues that need to be reconsidered in the meantime.

This idea of curbing indiscriminate dumping is incredible. But don’t we think also that the idea of placing rubbish bins at select places sounds better conceived than KMC having to go from door to door, collecting rubbish? The latter idea sounds relieving for the people, but it certainly won’t take long before people start to dump their rubbishes in some dark, quite corners, which will take us back to square one. There is no policing system in the world that can stop that. Having to collect containers from selected places, and on a daily basis, is by far more reliable, sustainable, and economical for KMC.

People will have little interest in dumping indiscriminately if they have designated places to do so in dignity and in comfort.

Cleanliness is undoubtedly a virtue and it should be encouraged. Cleanliness is traditionally associated with good health, tidiness, and purity. We at the Daily Observer fully support "Operation Clean the Municipality"

The Taiwanese plenipotentiary to The Gambia has lauded the monthly business forum as a catalyst to the buoyancy of the country’s booming business sector. Dr Patrick made this statement on Wednesday at the Gambia’s Business Society Forum at the Kairaba Hotel, where he was honoured as the guest speaker.

Ambassador Chang expressed delight to be associated with the initiative, noting that it paves the way for more business partnership and expansion, besides showcasing business products and activities.

The forum is organised to promote and give an insight into the functions and works carried out by institutions and organisations. It also creates a platform where guests ask questions pertaining to business development and provides an opportunity for members of the Gambian business society to interact in a relaxed atmosphere.

In his speech, Ambassador Chang stressed the important role of diplomacy in galvanising busineses of various countries to forge credible partnerships that can yield multiple benefits to a country. He then expressed resolve to strengthen the bilateral relationship at all fronts between Banjul and Taipei, expressing hope to encourage more business investment in the country.

He expressed admiration with the visionary leadership of President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh for uplifting the standard of living of the country, especially in the areas of education, health and agriculture.

He paid tribute to the president for encouraging girls education and for sending Gambians on academic studies overseas. He described this as a clear manifestation of his selfless resolve to the rapid development of the country.

Giving an overview of the work of the Taiwanese Technical Mission in The Gambia, Dr James Tsai, head of the mission, said they started operation in The Gambia in November, 1995, with the aim to contribute to the development process of the country through agriculture and key other sectors.

Dr Tsai said the mission has been focusing on the rice production and vegetable gardening in the country, saying that the most recent programme is the “newly introduced acquaculture in Sapu in Central River Region”.

According to him, all these interventions are geared towards enhancing and diversifying agricultural production, as well as enable the country to achieve food security and poverty reduction.
