“The culture of Oyster harvesting has been with us generations. Just like fishing activities, its harvesting procedure includes:  harvesting from mangroves, processing as well as marketing, and it is done by women in The Gambia”, said Fatou Mboob Janha, coordinator of the Try Oyster Women Association, at Camalo along the Banjul/Serekunda highway, as the oyster season ends on Tuesday.

Mrs Mboob, a long time customer, said that, she one day visited the group, at their processing site and was deeply compelled by the fact that, these women are for many years not progressing neither being patronised. According to her, having known what their problems were, she proposed and organised an oyster festival last year, in order to raise funds as a starting capital, for revival and legal registration of the association.

She disclosed that, the success of the festival was as a result of many fulfilled pledges that amounted to D41,000.00 from the invitees.

She added that, some of the constraints the group faced are: lack of security, as they are sometimes attacked by criminals, which in 2006 resulted to the death of their colleague.    Two other women were attacked, wounded and hospitalised, Lack of standard shelter, with a storage facility for both products and materials. Lack of bathrooms, processing centre and also oyster market are their main constraints.

Resting on the above constraints, she said,  the women pleaded to Government, NGOs, FAO and other developmental  institutions for help.

“Since the establishment of the association, The Gambian people have seen improvement in these women. They are all put on uniforms, gloves, and use plastic bags while selling the oysters. Each and everyone of them has a bank account,  three boats. The processing site is clean and healthy . To organise a two day workshop for the association,  we are still requesting for funds”, she stated.

Mrs Mboob appealed to Government, NGOs, private and Public sectors and individuals, to come to the aid of these women. As the oyster season ends, they need jobs in order for them to survive and to help their children.

According to  the women, they would like to engage themselves in any meaningful job, such as house or office cleaners, Selling, farming and others ,so as to enable them pay their children school fees and their house rent.

In another development, Papa Secka and Madam Fatou Ndoye, from the Environmental Development Action (ENDA), in Senegal, on Tuesday, visited the Oyster women association at their site. They were accompanied by two  fisheries officials, from the fisheries department.

According to the visitors, ENDA is an NGO in Senegal, and they help the women in senegal , especially those involve in oyster processing. They added that, the purposed of their visit is to see some of the constraints these women are facing and when they go back to Senegal they will see how they can help them with some of their constraints, especially when the season ends.

Anna Mbenga Cham and Dawda Saine, senior fisheries officers, from the fisheries department also assured the association of their  fullest support  and cooperation.

Growing Importance of Marketing in The Gambia

Monday, June 09, 2008

There is no gainsaying the fact that markets and marketing are essential in all economic activities. In retrospect however, it is disappointing to recall that there were times when farmers’ produce was left unsold after a season of toil and drudgery, as there is no market for them in the country. This situation accentuates the fact that unless serious attention is given to agriculture and farmers are adequately empowered, poverty reduction cannot be achieved in the country.

On the other hand, the crusade that is currently ongoing to encourage and promote greater participation of Gambians in farming in order to attain food self-sufficiency can best yield the expected results and dividends if producers adopt efficient marketing strategies.

It is true that going back to the land crusade embarked upon by President Jammeh offers a lot of hope for a better life.

Government’s priority should be the farmers because theirs is not only another vocation but also the backbone of the country’s economy. The marketing of their produce would constitute a right measure to achieve reduction in poverty.

The rainy season has set in, as usual, with lot of expectations from farmers and from the government. As we get into the rainy season, it is fair to think that because the importance of the past is to learn from it. The nation should set out more effective plans to achieve more for The Gambia in the coming year.

The government should be encouraged to work closely with other organisations such as The Gambia Chambers of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) to seek to improve the noble agenda for the ultimate good of our country.

In fact, that is the reason we agreed with the Finance Secy when he told parliament last year that due to “inactive weather, mass degradation and inefficient market storage, agriculture is decreasing in The Gambia.

“No nation was ever ruined by trade.”

Commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

The Consumer Protection Association of The Gambia (CPAG) recently joined the Global Movement of Consumer Groups to commemorate World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD). They aimed to highlight the implications of eating unhealthy food. The programme was held at the NaNa Conference Hall on the Bertil Harding Highway, Mile Seven.

Speaking during the commemoration, the head of the Food and Trade Association, Dr. Omar Touray, said that the association was established in 2005 to make consumers aware. According to him, the association has been working hard for the past three years.

To stop the marketing, Dr. Touray explained that campaigns have to be started both in homes, schools and football clubs.

For his part, Mr. Amadou Gaye, Chairperson of the association, revealed that social concern, environmental concern, sharing together and supporting one another are very important for consumers. This year, the WCRD theme will be ‘Junk Food Generation’, and the campaign will be against the marketing of unhealthy food to children and other consumers.

According to Consumers International (CI), about 177 million children around the world are already overweight or obese and we must act to prevent the spread of the childhood obesity epidemic. Furthermore, he stated, unhealthy diets and a lack of physical exercise are the leading causes of diabetes and heart disease, which are on the rise in developing countries such as The Gambia. Eating food high in fat, salt and sugar contributes to an unhealthy diet and obesity. Other speakers included Mr. Pa Modou Faal, National Nutritional Agency  and  Olay Njie Taal. Both expressed similar sentiments.

New Hope for Domain Parking

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Domain parking has had a bit of a bad reputation, and rightfully so. Most parked domains are setup with a domain registrar and they are the ones who end up making most of the income from clicks on your parked pages, that is, if your parked page gets any clicks at all. In truth, the domain registrars are likely only interested in making money from your domain name registration.

I have been intrigued with the domain parking concept however was discouraged until recently with the potential of parking my domains. It is true, almost all parked pages are shunned by the major search engines because they lack any quality content and are simply filled with ads. Simple logic told me that if the search engines are not interested at all with parked pages filled with ads, and this means the chances of people finding my parked pages is slim to none.

Thankfully there is new hope for parking domains with rich content parking systems, for example the one I now use, WhyPark (http://cyberflash.whypark.hop.clickbank.net/). These domain parking systems don't just set you up with a page full of ads and forget about you, they provide you with simple tools that let you create rich content websites full of relevant articles that search engines love. This is the most exciting development in domain parking history because it means anyone can create a quality web site containing your own advertisements that you earn all or most of the income from.

This revolution in domain parking opens the doors for anyone interested in creating powerful websites and capitalizing on their income potential.

While it is possible to invest just twenty minutes of your time setting up a domain with one of these rich content parking systems, the more time and effort you invest in promoting your domain, the more traffic your domain will receive in turn increasing your domains earning potential.

Ways To Improve Sales Through Your Website

Friday, January 11, 2008

Anyone who has been marketing online knows that the lifeblood of a business is the traffic of a site. More visitors equal more sales. However, here are some ways that you can tweak your sites with to improve sales without the need to get more visitors.

The first method is to weave in your personal touch in your sales message. Nobody wants to be sold to by a total stranger, but many people will buy what their close friends recommend to them. If you can convince your audience that you are a personal friend who has their best interest at heart, they will be convinced to buy your products. Remember to speak to an individual in your salesletter, not to your whole audience.

The second method is to publish testimonials and comments from your customers. A good idea would be to publish both good and bad comments; that way prospects will be really convinced that these testimonials are real. When prospects see testimonials on your website, they will have the confidence to buy from you because human beings follow the herd mentality; when others have bought and proven it authentic, they will jump on the bandwagon and buy too.

Use visual representations for the problems and solutions that your product offers. Not everyone will read your text copy from the head to the tail, but most people will pay attention to images on your website.

Offer quality bonuses to accompany the product. When you offer bonuses that complement your product, your prospects will feel it's a very good deal and it would be stupid to miss it. Be sure to state the monetary value of your bonuses so that people will be even more compelled to grab your good bargain.

Lastly, ask for the sale! Many people entice their prospects with the benefits of their product, sell to them with stories of how it has solved many problems, even offered killer bonuses but forget to ask for the sale. Give a clear instruction on how to buy your product (e.g. "click the button to buy now!").
