Edrissa Sonko revives Rovers play-off hopes

After being left out of the starting line up as a punishment for his late arrival from international duties, the Gambian international winger, Edrissa Sonko, came off the bench to inspire 10-man Tranmere Rovers to a 2-1 away win against resilient Cheltenham on Tuesday. Fellow winger, Chris Shuker, kept his place in the Rovers’ starting line-up on Tuesday at the expense of Sonko who was an unused subsititude during Gambia’s 1-1 draw against Senegal in their World Cup qualifier. Rovers manager,...

Woman under arrest for alleged maltreatment of foster child

Unimpeachable sources have revealed to the Daily Observer that one Mariama Sarr, a Senegalese citizen residing in Juffereh, was last Wednesday, October 1st, arrested with her husband, Ebrima Sarr, for maltreating their adopted daughter. They were subsequently detained at the Barra Police Station. According to our sources, Mariama Sarr allegedly cut her adopted daughter’s genital parts using a hot knife, as punishment for her ‘disobeying commands’. Sources further indicated that the 7 year-old...

Two sisters from Bakau were yesterday convicted and sentenced by Principal Magistrate Buba Jawo of the Kanifing Magistrates Court, after they were found guilty of assault. Both Maimuna Jammeh and her sister, Oumie Jammeh, were fined to the sum D5,000 each or in default, to serve one year jail-term. The duo were guilty of assaulting and afflicting bodily harm to Maimuna Jammeh (bearing the same name with one of her attackers), believed to be related to the convicts. In his judgment, the...

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

PrayersSiua Gafie v.60 states: “And your lord says call on me. I will answer your (prayer) but those who are too arrogant to serve me will surely enter hell abased.” Allah created and loves man. He always wants man to know that he has a creator, when he is in difficult times (with problems), man should understand that Allah the creator gives and takes from everyone whenever it pleases Him. Whenever Allah wants to give something to man, no one can stop it from coming to you.  On the other hand,...

Ken’s GFA Suspension – Someone else disagrees!

Editor,      I also write to make an appeal to the GFA to re-visit the ban imposed on Ken Jammeh former U-20 Skipper of The Gambia our motherland.Ya to be honest what the GFA did was the right thing because such behavior should not be entertain in Gambian football, much more for a captain of the National side.As Fabio Capello the English coach said some weeks back that he is looking for a captain who should not only lead the team but a role model in society with high sense of discipline and...

Justice and mercy

Discipline is a pre-requisite for harmony as it propagates tolerance and understanding. When a society is wanting in discipline, it is in effect, at a state of war with itself. Confusion, unrest, banditry, and all sorts of destabilizing situations, are what such a society stands to gain. The result is uncertainty for its subsequent generations. This is why we are very much particular about the subject. Our concern is evident of the number of times we have attempted to address the issue here on...

GFA was too harsh

Editor, Please, allow space in your most respectable paper to voice my concern about the punishment given to the Gambian defender, Ken Jammeh. There is absolutely no doubt that the man committed a serious mistake, but GFA has acting impulsively by giving this such a hash sentence, which is tantamount to the GFA shooting itself on the feet. I believe that the idea of punishing Ken was to make him assume his place as a role model and behave like one, but not destroy his carrier as a footballer....

DRC: "Majority of rapists go unpunished"

Sexual violence against women is rampant in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) but the majority of perpetrators, especially in "no-law" zones, go unpunished, according to a UN independent human rights expert. In South Kivu Province, for example, 14,200 rape cases were registered between 2005 and 2007 but only 287 were taken to court, Titinga Frederic Pacere, the UN Human Rights Council's independent expert on the state of human rights in the DRC, told reporters on 14 March. He expressed...

NUGS/UTG students union in constitutional stalemate

The constitutional impasse engulfing the national union of Gambian students (NUGS) seems to have taking a shape for the worst as the ousted University of the Gambia Students’ Union (UTGSU) representative at NUGS, Mr Ebrima Sanneh, is showing no sign of backing out. On Monday Mr Sanneh walked into our office complex with a six page document purportedly from NUGS. The document, entitled "NUGS IPRO debunks UTGSU", accused the latter of political victimization against their president. It also...
