‘Don’t involve police in civil matters’

Thursday, September 06, 2007

Principal Magistrate, Moses Richards of the Kanifing Magisterates’ Court, has said that civil matters are not for police and should be solved amicably, without their involvement..

According to him, parties involved in civil cases should come to court before reporting the matter to the police.

Magistrate Richards made these remarks on Monday while presiding over a civil case involving one Roberts Coker, plaintiff and one Isatou, the defendant.

In his testimony before the court, Roberts Coker, the plaintiff, told the court that he bought a second-hand refrigerator from the defendant at a cost of D4000.

“But before I bought the said refrigerator, the defendant gave me the assurance that the said refrigerator is in good working condition. When I took it home I switched it on and later found out overnight that it was not functioning properly. Immediately I called to inform her about the refrigerator’s condition,“ he said.

According to him the defendant later telephone him (Coker) and said that her husband was away and that they have  used the refrigerator’s money. The case is adjourned.
