Author: by Kojo and Alhagie Jobe Wallidan clinch double![]() Tuesday, September 09, 2008 If the saying 'experience is the best teacher' is anything to go by, then Wallidan, one of the most successful and decorated clubs in Gambian football have just shown that at the Independence Stadium on Sunday. When all seemed lost for them in a fiery and much anticipated FA Cup final clash against an ingenious and love-to-watch Samger side, they struck two goals in the space of four minutes to level and eventually put four shots pass Samger's goalie to send the academy boys packing in tears. Wallidan were the first to threaten with George Cole and Muhamed Sugufara trying outside shots in the first ten minutes. They got punished for their early threat as Samger's skipper Ebrima Jaiteh netted from the spot after Assan Gassama was brought down by Sarjo Jarju. Samger added more woes to Wallidan faithfuls when Lamin Samateh's solo effort culminated into his team's second three minutes into the second half to usher them near to their first ever silverware. Wallidan's George Cole, Ebrima Sonko, Yunusa Jallow and Muhamed Sugufara struggled to break through Samger's defense marshalled by Ebrima Jaiteh, Pa Sulayman Badjie, Emmanuel Gomez and Victor Jatta but all their efforts proved futile at first. When Samger was just entertaining the crowd by doing what they love most, knocking the ball around, Ali Ceesay was caught stripping down Wallidan's Ebrima Sonko in the area giving their opponent a penalty which was easily tapped in by skipper George Cole in the 83rd minute. Ceesay got sent off for a second bookable for that incident. Wallidan got fired up as they refused to retire by coming all out for an equalizer. They did not have to wait long for that as Ebrima Sonko volleyed in Wayeh Sey's cross three minutes to time to allow penalties to break the tie. Ebrima Jaiteh and Lamin Samateh, Samger's goal scorers, became their own nemesis as they failed to convert their kicks that earned Wallidan their tenth double in many years. He started football in the streets of Serrekunda before rising to the Serrekunda nawettan league, where he starred for Jan Jang FC. Upon his brilliant display at the nawettan, the defunct division one side, Flaminins counted themselves lucky when they lured the central midfield maestro to the senior level in 1998. Mal later made a move to Real de Banjul where he had a successful stint before making a move to Wallidan amidst a fierce high-profile transfer battle in 2004. Mal claimed to be a free player when he was switching to Wallidan, but Real de Banjul insisted he still had a contract with them. And the matter turned more complicated when former club, Flaminins, claimed ownership of the player, who was later allowed to join the Blue Boys. Author: DO Peter Bonu Johnson’s resignationTuesday, May 27, 2008 Editor, Kindly allow me space in your great medium to add my comments to the resignation of Peter Bonu Johnson, by far the most successful Gambian coach from a results standpoint. Given that Bonu just acquired the highest license in Football coaching at the expense of the GNOC (I stand to be corrected) makes this a no brainer. The allegations in his resignation letter are serious enough for the FA to come out and address the situation. At the same time, the FA should find a way to reach out to Bonu and sit in a dialogue to work out their differences in the interest of the nation. Bonu Johnson is a highly acclaimed coach and we stand to loose him for something that can be fixed. This is crunch time for the new coach and realistically the least he needs at this crucial moment in his preparation is distraction. Therefore, I appeal to the FA to once again open up just like they did in the Ken Jammeh case and let’s fix this. Like Obama, WE CAN! Finally we must all realize that The Gambia is what is at stake here and we must do whatever it takes for Mother Gambia and if it should take sitting down with Coach Johnson then we should. Remember this is the same Coach whose wife and kids were visited by a mob, following a loss in Canada; he did not quit then, why now? Respectfully, Mindorr Mama.
