Lamine Ndiaye, the Senegalese Senior national team coach has finally named his squad for the up coming game against the Gambia, but both Niang and Diawara were left out despite a call for them to return to international duties. But to the surprise of many the Senegalese veteran, Khalilou Fadiga has been handed the chance to return to the national side after 3years absence.

The Senegalese coach recently made a call for the return of striker Momadou Niang and giant defender Souleymane Diawara for what is considered the most crucial derby encounter against their rivals the Gambia in the world and African cup preliminaries round slated for the 11thOctober 2008 in Dakar, Senegal.

It could be recalled that Khalilou Fadiga’s last appearance for the Senegalese national team was 26thMay 2005.

The Senegalese team needs to beat the Gambia to advance to the next stage while the Gambia needs only a point against Senegal according to the football analyst.

Gambia hit by Pa Saikou blow

Monday, October 06, 2008

The Scorpions will be without Pa Saikou Kujabi during the weekend’s crucial game against Senegal after the left full back contracted malaria.

The Gambia’s European coach Paul Put has confirmed that the 22-year-old defender, who plies his trade with the Austrian first division side, SV Reid, will not be available for the encounter.

But the Belgian will still be able to field his strongest team yet with all other players fit.
“It’s a sad news that Pa Saikou will miss the match. He called to inform me that he won’t be coming because he has contracted malaria, Put told Observer Sports.

“He is a left-footer and we have few left-footers in the team. But I have the confidence that the player who will replace him will do well”.

Gambian basketballer shines in Us

Friday, September 26, 2008

Tijan Jobe is a junior college transfer from The Gambia who is presently making a name for himself at the Indiana University men’s basketball team in United States.

Jobe, a 7-foot, 255-pound center, had brief sting with Olney Central College in Illinois before signing a national letter of intent to attend Indiana University and play basketball for the team beginning this season - a development that excited the Indiana officials.

"We are excited to be able to sign a player with the defensive ability and rebounding presence that Tijan has," said his new manager Tom Crean.

"We feel he has a lot of room for growth in the sense of improving on both the defensive and offensive end and we love the fact that he plays extremely hard. His height and wingspan (7-5 1/2) is something that our team was in great need of."

Originally from Banjul,  Jobe averaged 4.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and a block for Olney Central College last season. He attended Butler County Community College as a freshman and attended Laurinburg (N.C.) Prep School.

He went to the United States four years ago through the African Hoop Opportunities Providing an Education Foundation (A-HOPE), which is run by Bloomington resident Mark Adams. The foundation is designed to provide talented basketball players from a host of African countries the opportunity to go to the United States to use their skills as a means to get a U.S. education.

The Gambian, who chose Indiana over scores of other teams, is ready to prove that he belongs.

“Of course, I have a long wingspan,” Jobe said. “I’ll make use of that.”
Offensively, Jobe said his coaches have been working with him to help develop a mid-range jump shot. Although Jobe admits he prefers to have his back to the basket on offense, he said the coaching staff has been working with him on facing up on to open lanes for the guards. Jobe said his big role on offense will be to set screens for the many guards on the team and create open space for them to make plays.

Quizzed about the way the team is coming together, the big man said he has noticed changes in every player on the team since they’ve started playing together.

“Everybody’s getting better everyday,” Jobe said.

He said said since he has come to the United States, he hasn’t been able to go back to The Gambia, and although he said he loves Bloomington and has a brother and sister who work in Washington, he still misses his home.

“I miss all my friends back home,” Jobe said. “I miss my family.”
Jobe said he hopes to be able to visit his family next year, but until then, he will be counted on by Crean, a man impressed with Jobe’s work ethic.

Unsettled Assan Jatta in FC Dallas for trial

Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Gambia and SK Lierse striker, Assan Jatta, commonly known as Bierhoff, is currently on a 10-day trial with the American Major League Soccer club, FC Dallas, Observer Sports can reveal.

The 24-year-old forward joined  SK Lierse in 2007 alongside his comrade Mustapha Jarju from Steve Biko, but his failure to adapt to life at the Belgian club saw him spent the better part of his two-year contract with another second division side, K.F.C. Verbroedering Geel.

His one-year loan spell with Geel expired last season and it seems SK Lierse are in no mood of keeping the injury-plagued forward who has 12 caps to his name.

FC Dallas is a North American professional soccer team based in Frisco, Texas, United States.

Founded in 1996 as the Dallas Burn, the team plays in Major League Soccer (MLS).  From 1996-2002 the team played in the Cotton Bowl. In an effort to save money due to the club's unfavorable lease with the Cotton Bowl, the club played its 2003 home games at Dragon Stadium, a high school stadium in Southlake, a Fort Worth suburb.

After listening to its fans, the Dallas Burn, as the team was called from 1996-2004, moved back to the Cotton Bowl for the 2004 season.

In August 2005, the club moved into Pizza Hut Park, a soccer-specific stadium in the northern suburb of Frisco. To celebrate this move, the club rebranded itself with a more soccer-fitting name, FC Dallas.

Tranmere move delights Edi Sonko

Wednesday, July 16, 2008
After training with his new team mates last week, new Tranmere Rovers signing Eddy Sonko's first job was to meet the press. The Gambian international winger spoke with local radio and newspapers before posing for photographs.

He said: "It's a pleasure to come and play for Tranmere this season. I feel very comfortable here.  "I can play on the right, left or in the centre, it doesn't matter where. The most important thing for me is to be on the pitch and try to help the team win games.

"Football in the Netherlands and in England is quite different. English football is quite direct. It's something I had to adapt to when I moved to Walsall. In Holland they pass the ball around and wait for their moment. Here they hit the strikers, try to pick up the second balls and go forward. I really enjoy it."

The 28-year-old forward, joined Walsall last summer and made 37 appearances before the club opted not to renew his contract at the end of the season.

Sonko stated that he had the choice of three or four clubs but he saw the English Division side, Tranmere, as a progressive and ambitious club.  “I think my speed and directness will add pace to the team," he said shortly after inking a one-year deal.

Edrissa Sonko began his career at Real de Banjul, before moving to Belgian first division side Anderlecht in 1999.  He moved to Dutch side Roda JC in 2000 before having a short spell at Greek side Xanthi in 2007.  He scored 7 goals in his 14 international appearances for Gambia Scorpions.

He tasked the new board to work tirelessly in crafting a strategy towards sustainability, financial and resource independence to ensure that young people and the sporting fraternity who come to use the edifice to develop their skills and talents towards delivering the vision.

GFA set Samger record straight

Wednesday, July 09, 2008
The Gambia Football Association have sharply reacted to the complaints made by Samger coach that some of his players are being forced to put the national team before their club even though the (players) are owned by the club and not the national team.

Coach Jane Joof has been pouring  severe criticism on the national football’s governing body and the head coach of the Gambia Under 20 team, Rubinazzi, after playing three league matches without three key players who are currently with the Under 20 team.

He complained that the absence of the players - Haruna Jammeh, Pa Badjie and Emmanuel Gomez - is heavily felt by the team, noting that should Samger miss out on their first league title in their first season in top flight, the Football Association will have their share of the blame.

However, an official at the Gambia Football Association told Observer Sports that Samger have no cause to complain.

“The regulations state that if a club miss five or more players, then your games should be suspended. But Samger are missing less than this number,” Jammeh Bojang, Secretary General of Gambia Football Association told Observer Sports yesterday.

“These regulations were made by the clubs themselves. In fact people should know that GFA is an association of clubs and not individuals.”
